In this paper, we make an investigation of receive antenna selection (RAS) strategies in the secure pre-coding aided spatial modulation (PSM) system with the aid of artificial noise. Due to a lack of the closed-form expression for secrecy rate (SR) in secure PSM systems, it is hard to optimize the RAS. To address this issue, the cut-off rate is used as an approximation of the SR. Further, two low-complexity RAS schemes for maximizing SR, called Max-SR-L and Max-SR-H, are derived in the low and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions, respectively. Due to the fact that the former works well in the low SNR region but becomes worse in the medium and high SNR regions while the latter also has the similar problem, a novel RAS strategy Max-SR-A is proposed to cover all SNR regions. Simulation results show that the proposed Max-SR-H and Max-SR-L schemes approach the optimal SR performances of the exhaustive search (ES) in the high and low SNR regions, respectively. In particular, the SR performance of the proposed Max-SR-A is close to that of the optimal ES and better than that of the random method in almost all SNR regions.

In this paper, we consider the downlink of a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) single user transmission system operating in the millimeter wave outdoor narrowband channel environment. We propose a novel receive spatial modulation architec ture aimed to reduce the power consumption at the user terminal, while attaining a significant throughput. The energy consumption reduction is obtained through the use of analog devices (amplitude detector), which reduces the number of radio frequency chains and analog-to-digital-converters (ADCs). The base station transmits spatial and modulation symbols per channel use. We show that the optimal spatial symbol detector is a threshold detector that can be implemented by using one bit ADC. We derive closed form expressions for the detection threshold at different signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regions showing that a simple threshold can be obtained at high SNR and its performance approaches the exact threshold. We derive expressions for the average bit error probability in the presence and absence of the threshold estimation error showing that a small number of pilot symbols is needed. A performance comparison is done between the proposed system and fully digital MIMO showing that a suitable constellation selection can reduce the performance gap.

Secure wireless information and power transfer based on directional modulation is conceived for amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying networks. Explicitly, we first formulate a secrecy rate maximization (SRM) problem, which can be decomposed into a twin- level optimization problem and solved by a one-dimensional (1D) search and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. Then in order to reduce the search complexity, we formulate an optimization problem based on maximizing the signal-to-leakage-AN-noise-ratio (Max-SLANR) criterion, and transform it into a SDR problem. Additionally, the relaxation is proved to be tight according to the classic Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. Finally, to reduce the computational complexity, a successive convex approximation (SCA) scheme is proposed to find a near-optimal solution. The complexity of the SCA scheme is much lower than that of the SRM and the Max-SLANR schemes. Simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the SCA scheme is very close to that of the SRM scheme in terms of its secrecy rate and bit error rate (BER), but much better than that of the zero forcing (ZF) scheme.
We propose a regularized zero-forcing transmit precoding (RZF-TPC) aided and distance-based adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) scheme to support aeronautical communication applications, by exploiting the high spectral efficiency of large-scale ante nna arrays and link adaption. Our RZF-TPC aided and distance-based ACM scheme switches its mode according to the distance between the communicating aircraft. We derive the closed-form asymptotic signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) expression of the RZF-TPC for the aeronautical channel, which is Rician, relying on a non-centered channel matrix that is dominated by the deterministic line-of-sight component. The effects of both realistic channel estimation errors and of the co-channel interference are considered in the derivation of this approximate closed-form SINR formula. Furthermore, we derive the analytical expression of the optimal regularization parameter that minimizes the mean square detection error. The achievable throughput expression based on our asymptotic approximate SINR formula is then utilized as the design metric for the proposed RZF-TPC aided and distance-based ACM scheme. Monte-Carlo simulation results are presented for validating our theoretical analysis as well as for investigating the impact of the key system parameters. The simulation results closely match the theoretical results. In the specific example that two communicating aircraft fly at a typical cruising speed of 920 km/h, heading in opposite direction over the distance up to 740 km taking a period of about 24 minutes, the RZF-TPC aided and distance-based ACM is capable of transmitting a total of 77 Gigabyte of data with the aid of 64 transmit antennas and 4 receive antennas, which is significantly higher than that of our previous eigen-beamforming transmit precoding aided and distance-based ACM benchmark.
Multi-antenna non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technique to significantly improve the spectral efficiency and support massive access, which has received considerable interests from academic and industry. This article first briefly introduces the basic idea of conventional multi-antenna NOMA technique, and then discusses the key limitations, namely, the high complexity of successive interference cancellation(SIC) and the lack of fairness between the user with a strong channel gain and the user with a weak channel gain. To address these problems, this article proposes a novel spatial modulation (SM) assisted multi-antenna NOMA technique, which avoids the use of SIC and is able to completely cancel intra-cluster interference. Furthermore, simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed novel technique compared to the conventional multi-antenna NOMA. Finally, this article points out the key challenges and sheds light on the future research directions of the SM assisted multi-antenna NOMA technique.
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising solution to build a programmable wireless environment for future communication systems, in which the reflector elements steer the incident signal in fully customizable ways by passive beamforming. I n this paper, an IRS-aided secure spatial modulation (SM) is proposed, where the IRS perform passive beamforming and information transfer simultaneously by adjusting the on-off states of the reflecting elements. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize the average secrecy rate (SR) by jointly optimizing the passive beamforming at IRS and the transmit power at transmitter under the consideration that the direct pathes channels from transmitter to receivers are obstructed by obstacles. As the expression of SR is complex, we derive a newly fitting expression (NASR) for the expression of traditional approximate SR (TASR), which has simpler closed-form and more convenient for subsequent optimization. Based on the above two fitting expressions, three beamforming methods, called maximizing NASR via successive convex approximation (Max-NASR-SCA), maximizing NASR via dual ascent (Max-NASR-DA) and maximizing TASR via semi-definite relaxation (Max-TASR-SDR) are proposed to improve the SR performance. Additionally, two transmit power design (TPD) methods are proposed based on the above two approximate SR expressions, called Max-NASR-TPD and Max-TASR-TPD. Simulation results show that the proposed Max-NASR-DA and Max-NASR-SCA IRS beamformers harvest substantial SR performance gains over Max-TASR-SDR. For TPD, the proposed Max-NASR-TPD performs better than Max-TASR-TPD. Particularly, the Max-NASR-TPD has a closed-form solution.
