The inflated transiting hot Jupiter HD 209458b is one of the best studied objects since the beginning of exoplanet characterization. Transmission observations of this system between the mid infrared and the far ultraviolet have revealed the signature of atomic, molecular, and possibly aerosol species in the lower atmosphere of the planet, as well as escaping hydrogen and metals in the upper atmosphere. From a re-analysis of near-ultraviolet (NUV) transmission observations of HD 209458b, we detect ionized iron (Fe II) absorption in a 100 A-wide range around 2370 A, lying beyond the planetary Roche lobe. However, we do not detect absorption of equally strong Fe II lines expected to be around 2600 A. Further, we find no evidence for absorption by neutral magnesium (Mg I), ionized magnesium (Mg II), nor neutral iron (Fe I). These results avoid the conflict with theoretical models previously found by Vidal-Madjar et al. (2013), which detected Mg I but did not detect Mg II from this same data set. Our results indicate that hydrodynamic escape is strong enough to carry atoms as heavy as iron beyond the planetary Roche lobe, even for planets less irradiated than the extreme ultra-hot-Jupiters such as WASP-12b and KELT-9b. The detection of iron and non-detection of magnesium in the upper atmosphere of HD 209458b can be explained by a model in which the lower atmosphere forms (hence, sequesters) primarily magnesium-bearing condensates, rather than iron condensates. This is suggested by current microphysical models. The inextricable synergy between upper- and lower-atmosphere properties highlights the value of combining observations that probe both regions.

Recent results from the Kepler mission indicate that super-Earths (planets with masses between 1-10 times that of the Earth) are the most common kind of planet around nearby Sun-like stars. These planets have no direct solar system analogue, and are currently one of the least well-understood classes of extrasolar planets. Many super-Earths have average densities that are consistent with a broad range of bulk compositions, including both water-dominated worlds and rocky planets covered by a thick hydrogen and helium atmosphere. Measurements of the transmission spectra of these planets offer the opportunity to resolve this degeneracy by directly constraining the scale heights and corresponding mean molecular weights of their atmospheres. We present Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared spectroscopy of two transits of the newly discovered transiting super-Earth HD 97658b. We use the Wide Field Camera 3s scanning mode to measure the wavelength-dependent transit depth in thirty individual bandpasses. Our averaged differential transmission spectrum has a median 1 sigma uncertainty of 23 ppm in individual bins, making this the most precise observation of an exoplanetary transmission spectrum obtained with WFC3 to date. Our data are inconsistent with a cloud-free solar metallicity atmosphere at the 10 sigma level. They are consistent at the 0.4 sigma level with a flat line model, as well as effectively flat models corresponding to a metal-rich atmosphere or a solar metallicity atmosphere with a cloud or haze layer located at pressures of 10 mbar or higher.

Using the NICMOS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope, we have measured the dayside spectrum of HD 209458b between 1.5--2.5 microns. The emergent spectrum is dominated by features due to the presence of methane (CH4) and water vapor (H2O), with s maller contributions from carbon dioxide (CO2). Combining this near-infrared spectrum with existing mid-infrared measurements shows the existence of a temperature inversion and confirms the interpretation of previous photometry measurements. We find a family of plausible solutions for the molecular abundance and detailed temperature profile. Observationally resolving the ambiguity between abundance and temperature requires either (1) improved wavelength coverage or spectral resolution of the dayside emission spectrum, or (2) a transmission spectrum where abundance determinations are less sensitive to the temperature structure.
The absorption of stellar radiation observed by the HD209458b in resonant lines of OI and CII has not yet been satisfactorily modeled. In our previous 2D simulations we have shown that the hydrogen-dominated upper atmosphere of HD209458b, heated by X UV radiation, expands supersonically beyond the Roche lobe and drags the heavier species along with it. Assuming solar abundances, OI and CII particles accelerated by tidal forces to velocities up to 50 km/s should produce the absorption due to Doppler resonance mechanism at the level of 6-10%, consistent with the observations. Since the 2D geometry does not take into account the Coriolis force in the planet reference frame, the question remained to which extent the spiraling of the escaping planetary material and its actually achieved velocity may influence the conclusions made on the basis of 2D modeling. In the present paper we apply for the first time in the study of HD209458b a global 3D hydrodynamic multi-fluid model that self-consistently describes the formation and expansion of the escaping planetary wind, affected by the tidal and Coriolis forces, as well as by the surrounding stellar wind. The modeling results confirm our previous findings that the velocity and density of the planetary flow are sufficiently high to produce the absorption in HI, OI, and CII resonant lines at the level close to the in-transit observed values. The novel finding is that the matching of the absorption measured in MgII and SiIII lines requires at least 10 times lower abundances of these elements than the Solar system values.

We present the first three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the atmosphere of HD 209458b which self-consistently include reduction of winds due to the Lorentz force and Ohmic heating. We find overall wind structures similar to tha t seen in previous models of hot Jupiter atmospheres, with strong equatorial jets and meridional flows poleward near the day side and equatorward near the night side. Inclusion of magnetic fields slows those winds and leads to Ohmic dissipation. We find wind slowing ranging from 10%-40% for reasonable field strengths. We find Ohmic dissipation rates ~10^17 W at 100 bar, orders of magnitude too small to explain the inflated radius of this planet. Faster wind speeds, not achievable in these anelastic calculations, may be able to increase this value somewhat, but likely will not be able to close the gap necessary to explain the inflated radius. We demonstrate that the discrepancy between the simulations presented here and previous models is due to inadequate treatment of magnetic field geometry and evolution. Induced poloidal fields become much larger than those imposed, highlighting the need for a self-consistent MHD treatment of these hot atmospheres.

The destruction of planets by migration into the star will release significant amounts of energy and material, which will present opportunities to observational study planets in new ways. To observe planet destruction, it is important to understand t he processes of how this energy and material is released as planets are destroyed. It is not known how fast the large amounts of energy and material are released, making it difficult to predict how observable planet destruction will be. There is a huge amount of energy made available by falling deep into the stars potential well: Simple calculations show that many of the currently known hot Jupiters can potentially produce events as luminous as a small nova if the energy is released fast enough. To observe these events, the important questions are how will this energy be released, and whether the energy will be released rapidly enough to create an event luminous enough to be found by transient surveys. Alternatively, if planet destruction is slowed by the inward migration alternating with periods of outward migration caused by Roche lobe overflow (RLOF), then the primary signature may be the effects of the release of large amounts of gas. The infall of this gas also may significantly contribute to the systems luminosity. The release of planetary gas may be a searchable signature of planet destruction. Signs of runaway RLOF and outward or alternating RLOF should be searched for. Observing planet destruction will provide a new window for study of exoplanets.
