In this paper, the scheduling of downlink file transmission in one cell with the assistance of cache nodes with finite cache space is studied. Specifically, requesting users arrive randomly and the base station (BS) reactively multicasts files to the requesting users and selected cache nodes. The latter can offload the traffic in their coverage areas from the BS. We consider the joint optimization of the abovementioned file placement and delivery within a finite lifetime subject to the cache space constraint. Within the lifetime, the allocation of multicast power and symbol number for each file transmission at the BS is formulated as a dynamic programming problem with a random stage number. Note that there are no existing solutions to this problem. We develop an asymptotically optimal solution framework by transforming the original problem to an equivalent finite-horizon Markov decision process (MDP) with a fixed stage number. A novel approximation approach is then proposed to address the curse of dimensionality, where the analytical expressions of approximate value functions are provided. We also derive analytical bounds on the exact value function and approximation error. The approximate value functions depend on some system statistics, e.g., requesting users distribution. One reinforcement learning algorithm is proposed for the scenario where these statistics are unknown.

In this work, we study coded placement in caching systems where the users have unequal cache sizes and demonstrate its performance advantage. In particular, we propose a caching scheme with coded placement for three-user systems that outperforms the best caching scheme with uncoded placement. In our proposed scheme, users cache both uncoded and coded pieces of the files, and the coded pieces at the users with large memories are decoded using the unicast/multicast signals intended to serve users with smaller memories. Furthermore, we extend the proposed scheme to larger systems and show the reduction in delivery load with coded placement compared to uncoded placement.
We consider a cache-aided wireless device-to-device (D2D) network under the constraint of one-shot delivery, where the placement phase is orchestrated by a central server. We assume that the devices caches are filled with uncoded data, and the whole file database at the server is made available in the collection of caches. Following this phase, the files requested by the users are serviced by inter-device multicast communication. For such a system setting, we provide the exact characterization of load-memory trade-off, by deriving both the minimum average and the minimum peak sum-loads of links between devices, for a given individual memory size at disposal of each user.
We study downlink beamforming in a single-cell network with a multi-antenna base station (BS) serving cache-enabled users. For a given common rate of the files in the system, we first formulate the minimum transmit power with beamforming at the BS as a non-convex optimization problem. This corresponds to a multiple multicast problem, to which a stationary solution can be efficiently obtained through successive convex approximation (SCA). It is observed that the complexity of the problem grows exponentially with the number of subfiles delivered to each user in each time slot, which itself grows exponentially with the number of users in the system. Therefore, we introduce a low-complexity alternative through time-sharing that limits the number of subfiles that can be received by a user in each time slot. It is shown through numerical simulations that, the reduced-complexity beamforming scheme has minimal performance gap compared to transmitting all the subfiles jointly, and outperforms the state-of-the-art low-complexity scheme at all SNR and rate values with sufficient spatial degrees of freedom, and in the high SNR/high rate regime when the number of spatial degrees of freedom is limited.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a promising solution to provide wireless data access for ground users in various applications (e.g., in emergence situations). This paper considers a UAV-enabled wireless network, in which multiple UAVs are deployed as aerial base stations (BSs) to serve users distributed on the ground. Different from prior works that ignore UAVs backhaul connections, we practically consider that these UAVs are connected to the core network through a ground gateway node via rate-limited multi-hop wireless backhauls. We also consider that the air-to-ground (A2G) access links from UAVs to users and the air-to-air (A2A) backhaul links among UAVs are operated over orthogonal frequency bands. Under this setup, we aim to maximize the common (or minimum) throughput among all the ground users in the downlink of this network subject to the flow conservation constraints at the UAVs, by optimizing the UAVs deployment locations, jointly with the bandwidth and power allocation of both the access and backhaul links. However, the common throughput maximization is a non-convex optimization problem that is difficult to be solved optimally. To tackle this issue, we use the techniques of alternating optimization and successive convex programming (SCP) to obtain a locally optimal solution. Numerical results show that the proposed design significantly improves the common throughput among all ground users as compared to other benchmark schemes.
