Net ionization and net capture cross-section calculations are presented for proton collisions from methane molecules and the DNA/RNA nucleobases adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, and uracil. We use the recently introduced independent-atom-model pixel counting method to calculate these cross sections in the 10 keV to 10 MeV impact energy range and compare them with results obtained from the simpler additivity rule, a previously used complete-neglect-of-differential-overlap method, and with experimental data and previous calculations where available. It is found that all theoretical results agree reasonably well at high energies, but deviate significantly in the low-to-intermediate energy range. In particular, the pixel counting method which takes the geometrical overlap of atomic cross sections into account is the only calculation that is able to describe the measurements for capture in proton-methane collisions down to 10 keV impact energy. For the nucleobases it also yields a significantly smaller cross section in this region than the other models. New measurements are urgently required to test this prediction.

The ionization dynamics of pure He nanodroplets irradiated by EUV radiation is studied using Velocity-Map Imaging PhotoElectron-PhotoIon COincidence (VMI-PEPICO) spectroscopy. We present photoelectron energy spectra and angular distributions measured in coincidence with the most abundant ions He+, He2+, and He3+. Surprisingly, below the autoionization threshold of He droplets we find indications for multiple excitation and subsequent ionization of the droplets by a Penning-like process. At high photon energies we evidence inelastic collisions of photoelectrons with the surrounding He atoms in the droplets.
Double and triple ionization spectra of isocyanic acid have been measured using multi-electron and ion coincidence techniques combined with synchrotron radiation and compared with high-level theoretical calculations. Vertical double ionization at an energy of 32.8+/-0.3 eV forms the 3A ground state in which the HNCO2+ ion is long-lived. The vertical triple ionization energy is determined as 65+/-1 eV. The core-valence double ionization spectra resemble the valence photoelectron spectrum in form, and their main features can be understood on the basis of a simple and rather widely applicable Coulomb model based on the characteristics of the molecular orbitals from which electrons are removed. Characteristics of the most important dissociation channels are examined and discussed.
We present cross sections for the neutral dissociation of methane, in a large part obtained through analytical approximations. With these cross sections the work of Song $textit{et al.}$ [J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data, $textbf{44}$, 023101, (2015)] can be extended which results in a complete and consistent set of cross sections for the collision of electrons with up to 100 eV energy with methane molecules. Notably, the resulting cross section set does not require any data fitting to produce bulk swarm parameters that match with experiments. Therefore consistency can be considered an inherent trait of the set, since swarm parameters are used exclusively for validation of the cross sections. Neutral dissociation of methane is essential to include (1) because it is a crucial electron energy sink in methane plasma, and (2) because it largely contributes to the production of hydrogen radicals that can be vital for plasma-chemical processes. Finally, we compare the production rates of hydrogen species for a swarm-fitted data set with ours. The two consistent cross section sets predict different production rates, with differences of $45%$ (at $100$ Td) and $125%$ (at $50$ Td) for production of H$_2$ and a similar trend for production of H. With this comparison we underline that the swarm-fitting procedure, used to ensure consistency of the electron swarm parameters, can possibly deteriorate the accuracy with which chemical production rates are estimated. This is of particular importance for applications with an emphasis on plasma-chemical activation of the gas.
We report on an experimental and theoretical study of the ionization-fragmentation dynamics of argon dimers in intense few-cycle laser pulses with a tagged carrier-envelope phase. We find that a field-driven electron transfer process from one argon a tom across the system boundary to the other argon atom triggers sub-cycle electron-electron interaction dynamics in the neighboring atom. This attosecond electron-transfer process between distant entities and its implications manifest themselves as a distinct phase-shift between the measured asymmetry of electron emission curves of the $text{Ar}^{+}+text{Ar}^{2+}$ and $text{Ar}^{2+}+text{Ar}^{2+}$ fragmentation channels. Our work discloses a strong-field route to controlling the dynamics in molecular compounds through the excitation of electronic dynamics on a distant molecule by driving inter-molecular electron-transfer processes.

In this paper we estimate the total cross sections for field stimulated photoemissions and photoabsorptions by quasi-free electrons within a non-equilibrium plasma evolving from the strong coupling to the weak coupling regime. Such transition may occ ur within laser-created plasmas, when the initially created plasma is cold but the heating of the plasma by the laser field is efficient. In particular, such a transition may occur within plasmas created by intense VUV radiation from a FEL as indicated by the results of the first experiments performed at the FLASH facility at DESY. In order to estimate the inverse bremsstrahlung cross sections, we use point-like and effective atomic potentials. For ions modelled as point-like charges, the total cross sections are strongly affected by the changing plasma environment. The maximal change of the cross sections may be of the order of 60 at the change of the plasma parameters (inverse Debye length, kappa, and the electron density, rho_e), in the range: kappa=0-3 A^{-1} and rho_e=0.01-1 A^{-1}. These ranges correspond to the physical conditions within the plasmas created during the first cluster experiments performed at the FLASH facility at DESY. In contrast, for the effective atomic potentials the total cross sections for photoemission and photoabsorption change only by a factor of 7 at most at the same plasma parameter range. Our results show that the inverse bremsstrahlung cross section estimated with the effective atomic potentials is not much affected by the plasma environment. This observation validates the previous estimations of the enhanced heating effect. This is important as this effect may be responsible for high energy absorption within clusters irradiated with VUV radiation.
