Scattering of ultraintense short laser pulses off relativistic electrons allows one to generate a large number of X- or $gamma$-ray photons with the expense of the spectral width---temporal pulsing of the laser inevitable leads to considerable spectral broadening. In this Letter, we describe a simple method to generate optimized laser pulses that compensate the nonlinear spectrum broadening, and can be thought of as a superposition of two oppositely linearly chirped pulses delayed with respect to each other. We develop a simple analytical model that allow us to predict the optimal parameters of such a two-pulse---the delay, amount of chirp and relative phase---for generation of a narrowband {gamma}-ray spectrum. Our predictions are confirmed by numerical optimization and simulations including 3D effects.

The collision of ultra-relativistic electron beams with intense short laser pulses makes possible to study QED in the high-intensity regime. Present day high-intensity lasers mostly operate with short pulse durations of several tens of femtoseconds, i.e. only a few optical cycles. A profound theoretical understanding of short pulse effects is important not only for studying fundamental aspects of high-intensity laser matter interaction, but also for applications as novel X- and gamma-ray radiation sources. In this article we give a brief overview of the theory of high-intensity QED with focus on effects due to the short pulse duration. The non-linear spectral broadening in non-linear Compton scattering due to the short pulse duration and its compensation is discussed.
The recoil associated with photon emission is key to the dynamics of ultrarelativistic electrons in strong electromagnetic fields, as are found in high-intensity laser-matter interactions and astrophysical environments such as neutron star magnetosph eres. When the energy of the photon becomes comparable to that of the electron, it is necessary to use quantum electrodynamics (QED) to describe the dynamics accurately. However, computing the appropriate scattering matrix element from strong-field QED is not generally possible due to multiparticle effects and the complex structure of the electromagnetic fields. Therefore these interactions are treated semiclassically, coupling probabilistic emission events to classical electrodynamics using rates calculated in the locally constant field approximation. Here we provide comprehensive benchmarking of this approach against the exact QED calculation for nonlinear Compton scattering of electrons in an intense laser pulse. We find agreement at the percentage level between the photon spectra, as well as between the models predictions of absorption from the background field, for normalized amplitudes $a_0 > 5$. We discuss possible routes towards improved numerical methods and the implications of our results for the study of QED cascades.

In this paper we discuss the dynamics of charged particles in high-intensity laser fields in the context of the Frenet-Serret formalism, which describes the intrinsic geometry of particle worldlines. We find approximate relations for the Frenet-Serre t scalars and basis vectors relevant for high-intensity laser particle interactions. The onset of quantum effects relates to the curvature radius of classical trajectories being on the order of the Compton wavelength. The effects of classical radiation reaction are discussed, as well as the classical precession of the spin-polarization vector according to the Thomas-Bargman-Michel-Telegdi (T-BMT) equation. We comment on the derivation of the photon emission rate in strong-field QED beyond the locally constant field approximation, which is used in Monte Carlo simulations of quantum radiation reaction. Such a numerical simulation is presented for a possible experiment to distinguish between classical and quantum mechanical models of radiation reaction.
We present a new paradigm for computation of radiation spectra in the non-linear regime of operation of inverse Compton sources characterized by high laser intensities. The resulting simulations show an unprecedented level of agreement with the exper iments. Increasing the laser intensity changes the longitudinal velocity of the electrons during their collision, leading to considerable non-linear broadening in the scattered radiation spectra. The effects of such ponderomotive broadening are so deleterious that most inverse Compton sources either remain at low laser intensities or pay a steep price to operate at a small fraction of the physically possible peak spectral output. This ponderomotive broadening can be reduced by a suitable frequency modulation (also referred to as chirping, which is not necessarily linear) of the incident laser pulse, thereby drastically increasing the peak spectral density. This frequency modulation, included in the new code as an optional functionality, is used in simulations to motivate the experimental implementation of this transformative technique.
We investigate enhanced field emission due to a continuous or pulsed oscillating field added to a constant electric field $E$ at the emitter surface. When the frequency of oscillation, field strength, and property of the emitter material satisfy the Keldysh condition $gamma<1/2$ one can use the adiabatic approximation for treating the oscillating field, i.e. consider the tunneling through the instantaneous Fowler-Nordheim barrier created by both fields. Due to the great sensitivity of the emission to the field strength the average tunneling current can be much larger than the current produced by only the constant field. We carry out the computations for arbitrary strong constant electric fields, beyond the commonly used Fowler-Nordheim approximation which exhibit in particular an important property of the wave function inside the potential barrier where it is found to be monotonically decreasing without oscillations.
