To tune the magnetic properties of hexagonal ferrites, a family of magnetoelectric multiferroic materials, by atomic-scale structural engineering, we studied the effect of structural distortion on the magnetic ordering temperature (TN). Using the symmetry analysis, we show that unlike most antiferromagnetic rare-earth transition-metal perovskites, a larger structural distortion leads to a higher TN in hexagonal ferrites and manganites, because the K3 structural distortion induces the three-dimensional magnetic ordering, which is forbidden in the undistorted structure by symmetry. We also revealed a near-linear relation between TN and the tolerance factor and a power-law relation between TN and the K3 distortion amplitude. Following the analysis, a record-high TN (185 K) among hexagonal ferrites was predicted in hexagonal ScFeO3 and experimentally verified in epitaxially stabilized films. These results add to the paradigm of spin-lattice coupling in antiferromagnetic oxides and suggests further tunability of hexagonal ferrites if more lattice distortion can be achieved.

We propose to tailor exchange interactions in magnetic monolayer films by tuning the adjacent non-magnetic substrate. As an example, we demonstrate a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic phase transition for one monolayer Fe on a Ta(x)W(1-x)(001) surface as a function of the Ta concentration. At the critical Ta concentration, the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is small and the magnetic phase space is dramatically broadened. Complex magnetic order such as spin-spirals, multiple-Q, or even disordered local moment states can occur, offering the possibility to store information in terms of ferromagnetic dots in an otherwise zero-magnetization state matrix.
A structural phase transition from cubic $Fdbar{3}m$ to tetragonal $I$4$_1$/$amd$ symmetry with $c/a >$ 1 is observed at $T_{rm{S}}$ = 16 K in spinel GeCo$_2$O$_4$ below the Neel temperature $T_N$ = 21 K. Structural and magnetic ordering appear to be decoupled with the structural distortion occurring at 16 K while magnetic order occurs at 21 K as determined by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. An elongation of CoO$_6$ octahedra is observed in the tetragonal phase of GeCo$_2$O$_4$. We present the complete crystallographic description of GeCo$_2$O$_4$ in the tetragonal $I$4$_1$/$amd$ space group and discuss the possible origin of this distortion in the context of known structural transitions in magnetic spinels. GeCo$_2$O$_4$ exhibits magnetodielectric coupling below $T_{rm{N}}$. The related spinels GeFe$_2$O$_4$ and GeNi$_2$O$_4$ have also been examined for comparison. Structural transitions were not detected in either compound down to $T approx$ 8 K. Magnetometry experiments reveal in GeFe$_2$O$_4$ a second antiferromagnetic transition, with $T_{rm{N1}}$ = 7.9 K and $T_{rm{N2}}$ = 6.2 K, that was previously unknown, and that bear a similarity to the magnetism of GeNi$_2$O$_4$.

Two magnetic ordering transitions are found in InMnO3, the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition near ~118 K and a lower possible spin rotation transition near ~42 K. Multiple length scale structural measurements reveal enhanced local distorti on found to be connected with tilting of the MnO5 polyhedra as temperature is reduced. Strong coupling is observed between the lattice and the spin manifested as changes in the structure near both of the magnetic ordering temperatures (at ~42 K and ~ 118 K). External parameters such as pressure are expected to modify the coupling.
We propose a way to use electric-field to control the magnetic ordering of the tetragonal BiFeO3. Based on systematic first-principles studies of the epitaxial strain effect on the ferroelectric and magnetic properties of the tetragonal BiFeO3, we fi nd that there exists a transition from C-type to G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase at in-plane constant a ~ 3.905 {AA} when the ferroelectric polarization is along [001] direction. Such magnetic phase transition can be explained by the competition between the Heisenberg exchange constant J1c and J2c under the influence of biaxial strain. Interestingly, when the in-plane lattice constant enlarges, the preferred ferroelectric polarization tends to be canted and eventually lies in the plane (along [110] direction). It is found that the orientation change of ferroelectric polarization, which can be realized by applying external electric-field, has significant impact on the Heisenberg exchange parameters and therefore the magnetic orderings of tetragonal BiFeO3. For example, at a ~ 3.79 {AA}, an electric field along [111] direction with magnitude of 2 MV/cm could change the magnetic ordering from C-AFM to G-AFM. As the magnetic ordering affects many physical properties of the magnetic material, e.g. magnetoresistance, we expect such strategy would provide a new avenue to the application of multiferroic materials.
We have investigated the Vanadium- (V) substituted Ni-Zn-Co ferrites where the samples were prepared using solid-state reaction technique. The impact of V5+ substitution on the structural, magnetic, dielectric and electrical properties of Ni-Zn-Co fe rrites has been studied. XRD analysis confirmed the formation of a single-phase cubic spinel structure. The lattice constants have been calculated both theoretically and experimentally along with other structural parameters such as bulk density, X-ray density and porosity. The FESEM images are taken to study the surface morphology. FTIR measurement is also performed which confirms spinel structure formation. The saturation magnetization (Ms), coercive field (Hc) and Bohr magneton (B) were calculated from the obtained M-H loops. The temperature dependent permeability is studied to obtain the Curie temperature. Frequency and composition dependence of permeability was also analyzed. Dielectric behavior and ac resistivity are also subjected to investigate the frequency dependency. An inverse relationship was observed between the composition dependence of dielectric constant and ac resistivity. The obtained results such as the electrical resistivity, dielectric constants and magnetic properties suggest the appropriateness of the studied ferrites in microwave device applications.
