To build a large library of mathematics, it seems more efficient to take advantage of the inherent structure of mathematical theories. Various theory presentation combinators have been proposed, and some have been implemented, in both legacy and current systems. Surprisingly, the ``standard library of most systems do not make pervasive use of these combinators. We present a set of combinators optimized for reuse, via the tiny theories approach. Our combinators draw their power from the inherent structure already present in the emph{category of contexts} associated to a dependently typed language. The current work builds on ideas originating in CLEAR and Specware and their descendents (both direct and intellectual). Driven by some design criteria for user-centric library design, our library-building experience via the systematic use of combinators has fed back into the semantics of these combinators, and later into an updated syntax for them.

We motivate and give semantics to theory presentation combinators as the foundational building blocks for a scalable library of theories. The key observation is that the category of contexts and fibered categories are the ideal theoretical tools for this purpose.
We define a notion of symmetric monoidal closed (SMC) theory, consisting of a SMC signature augmented with equations, and describe the classifying categories of such theories in terms of proof nets.
In this short note we study the semantics of two basic computational effects, exceptions and states, from a new point of view. In the handling of exceptions we dissociate the control from the elementary operation which recovers from the exception. In this way it becomes apparent that there is a duality, in the categorical sense, between exceptions and states.
This paper improves the treatment of equality in guarded dependent type theory (GDTT), by combining it with cubical type theory (CTT). GDTT is an extensional type theory with guarded recursive types, which are useful for building models of program lo gics, and for programming and reasoning with coinductive types. We wish to implement GDTT with decidable type checking, while still supporting non-trivial equality proofs that reason about the extensions of guarded recursive constructions. CTT is a variation of Martin-Lof type theory in which the identity type is replaced by abstract paths between terms. CTT provides a computational interpretation of functional extensionality, enjoys canonicity for the natural numbers type, and is conjectured to support decidable type-checking. Our new type theory, guarded cubical type theory (GCTT), provides a computational interpretation of extensionality for guarded recursive types. This further expands the foundations of CTT as a basis for formalisation in mathematics and computer science. We present examples to demonstrate the expressivity of our type theory, all of which have been checked using a prototype type-checker implementation. We show that CTT can be given semantics in presheaves on the product of the cube category and a small category with an initial object. We then show that the category of presheaves on the product of the cube category and omega provides semantics for GCTT.

When working with distant collaborators on the same documents, one often uses a version control system, which is a program tracking the history of files and helping importing modifications brought by others as patches. The implementation of such a sy stem requires to handle lots of situations depending on the operations performed by users on files, and it is thus difficult to ensure that all the corner cases have been correctly addressed. Here, instead of verifying the implementation of such a system, we adopt a complementary approach: we introduce a theoretical model, which is defined abstractly by the universal property that it should satisfy, and work out a concrete description of it. We begin by defining a category of files and patches, where the operation of merging the effect of two coinitial patches is defined by pushout. Since two patches can be incompatible, such a pushout does not necessarily exist in the category, which raises the question of which is the correct category to represent and manipulate files in conflicting state. We provide an answer by investigating the free completion of the category of files under finite colimits, and give an explicit description of this category: its objects are finite sets labeled by lines equipped with a transitive relation and morphisms are partial functions respecting labeling and relations.
