We study the decay of gravitational waves into dark energy fluctuations $pi$, through the processes $gamma to pipi$ and $gamma to gamma pi$, made possible by the spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance. Within the EFT of Dark Energy (or Horndeski/beyond Horndeski theories) the first process is large for the operator $frac12 tilde m_4^2(t) , delta g^{00}, left( {}^{(3)}! R + delta K_mu^ u delta K^mu_ u -delta K^2 right)$, so that the recent observations force $tilde m_4 =0$ (or equivalently $alpha_{rm H}=0$). This constraint, together with the requirement that gravitational waves travel at the speed of light, rules out all quartic and quintic GLPV theories. Additionally, we study how the same couplings affect the propagation of gravitons at loop order. The operator proportional to $tilde m_4^2$ generates a calculable, non-Lorentz invariant higher-derivative correction to the graviton propagation. The modification of the dispersion relation provides a bound on $tilde m_4^2$ comparable to the one of the decay. Conversely, operators up to cubic Horndeski do not generate sizeable higher-derivative corrections.

Gravitational wave (GW) constraints have recently been used to significantly restrict models of dark energy and modified gravity. New bounds arising from GW decay and GW-induced dark energy instabilities are particularly powerful in this context, com plementing bounds from the observed speed of GWs. We discuss the associated linear cosmology for Horndeski gravity models surviving these combined bounds and compute the corresponding cosmological parameter constraints, using CMB, redshift space distortion, matter power spectrum and BAO measurements from the Planck, SDSS/BOSS and 6dF surveys. The surviving theories are strongly constrained, tightening previous bounds on cosmological deviations from $Lambda{}$CDM by over an order of magnitude. We also comment on general cosmological stability constraints and the nature of screening for the surviving theories, pointing out that a raised strong coupling scale can ensure compatibility with gravitational wave constraints, while maintaining a functional Vainshtein screening mechanism on solar system scales. Finally, we discuss the quasi-static limit as well as (constraints on) related observables for near-future surveys.
We study the holographic dark energy (HDE) model by using the future gravitational wave (GW) standard siren data observed from the Einstein Telescope (ET) in this work. We simulate 1000 GW standard siren data based on a 10-year observation of the ET to make this analysis. We find that all the cosmological parameters in the HDE model can be tremendously improved by including the GW standard siren data in the cosmological fit. The GW data combined with the current cosmic microwave background anisotropies, baryon acoustic oscillations, and type Ia supernovae data will measure the cosmological parameters $Omega_{rm m}$, $H_0$, and $c$ in the HDE model to be at the accuracies of 1.28%, 0.59%, and 3.69%, respectively. A comparison with the cosmological constant model and the constant-$w$ dark energy model shows that, compared to the standard model, the parameter degeneracies will be broken more thoroughly in a dynamical dark energy model. We find that the GW data alone can provide a fairly good measurement for $H_0$, but for other cosmological parameters the GW data alone can only provide rather weak measurements. However, due to the fact that the parameter degeneracies can be broken by the GW data, the standard sirens can play an essential role in improving the parameter estimation.
In this white paper, we discuss the prospects for characterizing and identifying dark matter using gravitational waves, covering a wide range of dark matter candidate types and signals. We argue that present and upcoming gravitational wave probes off er unprecedented opportunities for unraveling the nature of dark matter and we identify the most urgent challenges and open problems with the aim of encouraging a strong community effort at the interface between these two exciting fields of research.
A stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) would gravitationally lens the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. We find that the lensing due to gravitational waves(GW) is more efficient as compared to lensing due to scalar density perturb ations. Though the effect of lensing due to GW is found to effect all the four CMB power spectra, its effect is most prominently seen in the CMB polarization power spectra. This suggests that the measurements of the CMB angular power spectra could be used to constraining the energy density ($Omega_{GW}$) of the SGBW. In our analysis we find that the most stringent constraints on $Omega_{GW}$ are due to measurements of the angular power spectra of CMB temperature anisotropies. We show that in the future it will be possible to place more stringent bounds on $Omega_{GW}$ using improved upper limits or detections of the angular power spectra of the B-modes of CMB polarization at large multipoles.
We investigate the appropriateness of the use of different Lagrangians to describe various components of the cosmic energy budget, discussing the degeneracies between them in the absence of nonminimal couplings to gravity or other fields, and clarify ing some misconceptions in the literature. We further demonstrate that these degeneracies are generally broken for nonminimal coupled fluids, in which case the identification of the appropriate on-shell Lagrangian may become essential in order characterize the overall dynamics. We then show that models with the same on-shell Lagrangian may have different proper energy densities and use this result to map dark energy models into unified dark energy models in which dark matter and dark energy are described by the same perfect fluid. We determine the correspondence between their equation of state parameters and sound speeds, briefly discussing the linear sound speed problem of unified dark energy models as well as a possible way out associated to the nonlinear dynamics.
