Virtual reality (VR) over wireless is emerging as an important use case of 5G networks. Immersive VR experience requires the delivery of huge data at ultra-low latency, thus demanding ultra-high transmission rate. This challenge can be largely addressed by the recent network architecture known as mobile edge computing (MEC), which enables caching and computing capabilities at the edge of wireless networks. This paper presents a novel MEC-based mobile VR delivery framework that is able to cache parts of the field of views (FOVs) in advance and run certain post-processing procedures at the mobile VR device. To optimize resource allocation at the mobile VR device, we formulate a joint caching and computing decision problem to minimize the average required transmission rate while meeting a given latency constraint. When FOVs are homogeneous, we obtain a closed-form expression for the optimal joint policy which reveals interesting communications-caching-computing tradeoffs. When FOVs are heterogeneous, we obtain a local optima of the problem by transforming it into a linearly constrained indefinite quadratic problem then applying concave convex procedure. Numerical results demonstrate great promises of the proposed mobile VR delivery framework in saving communication bandwidth while meeting low latency requirement.

Computation task service delivery in a computing-enabled and caching-aided multi-user mobile edge computing (MEC) system is studied in this paper, where a MEC server can deliver the input or output datas of tasks to mobile devices over a wireless mul ticast channel. The computing-enabled and caching-aided mobile devices are able to store the input or output datas of some tasks, and also compute some tasks locally, reducing the wireless bandwidth consumption. The corresponding framework of this system is established, and under the latency constraint, we jointly optimize the caching and computing policy at mobile devices to minimize the required transmission bandwidth. The joint policy optimization problem is shown to be NP-hard, and based on equivalent transformation and exact penalization of the problem, a stationary point is obtained via concave convex procedure (CCCP). Moreover, in a symmetric scenario, gains offered by this approach are derived to analytically understand the influences of caching and computing resources at mobile devices, multicast transmission, the number of mobile devices, as well as the number of tasks on the transmission bandwidth. Our results indicate that exploiting the computing and caching resources at mobile devices can provide significant bandwidth savings.
Mobile virtual reality (VR) delivery is gaining increasing attention from both industry and academia due to its ability to provide an immersive experience. However, achieving mobile VR delivery requires ultra-high transmission rate, deemed as a first killer application for 5G wireless networks. In this paper, in order to alleviate the traffic burden over wireless networks, we develop an implementation framework for mobile VR delivery by utilizing caching and computing capabilities of mobile VR device. We then jointly optimize the caching and computation offloading policy for minimizing the required average transmission rate under the latency and local average energy consumption constraints. In a symmetric scenario, we obtain the optimal joint policy and the closed-form expression of the minimum average transmission rate. Accordingly, we analyze the tradeoff among communication, computing and caching, and then reveal analytically the fact that the communication overhead can be traded by the computing and caching capabilities of mobile VR device, and also what conditions must be met for it to happen. Finally, we discuss the optimization problem in a heterogeneous scenario, and propose an efficient suboptimal algorithm with low computation complexity, which is shown to achieve good performance in the numerical results.

Mobile-edge computing (MEC) has recently emerged as a promising paradigm to liberate mobile devices from increasingly intensive computation workloads, as well as to improve the quality of computation experience. In this paper, we investigate the trad eoff between two critical but conflicting objectives in multi-user MEC systems, namely, the power consumption of mobile devices and the execution delay of computation tasks. A power consumption minimization problem with task buffer stability constraints is formulated to investigate the tradeoff, and an online algorithm that decides the local execution and computation offloading policy is developed based on Lyapunov optimization. Specifically, at each time slot, the optimal frequencies of the local CPUs are obtained in closed forms, while the optimal transmit power and bandwidth allocation for computation offloading are determined with the Gauss-Seidel method. Performance analysis is conducted for the proposed algorithm, which indicates that the power consumption and execution delay obeys an [O (1/V); O (V)] tradeoff with V as a control parameter. Simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the impacts of various parameters to the system performance.
Under the paradigm of caching, partial data is delivered before the actual requests of users are known. In this paper, this problem is modeled as a canonical distributed source coding problem with side information, where the side information represen ts the users requests. For the single-user case, a single-letter characterization of the optimal rate region is established, and for several important special cases, closed-form solutions are given, including the scenario of uniformly distributed user requests. In this case, it is shown that the optimal caching strategy is closely related to total correlation and Wyners common information. Using the insight gained from the single-user case, three two-user scenarios admitting single-letter characterization are considered, which draw connections to existing source coding problems in the literature: the Gray--Wyner system and distributed successive refinement. Finally, the model studied by Maddah-Ali and Niesen is rephrased to make a comparison with the considered information-theoretic model. Although the two caching models have a similar behavior for the single-user case, it is shown through a two-user example that the two caching models behave differently in general.

For a caching system with multiple users, we aim to characterize the memory-rate tradeoff for caching with uncoded cache placement, under nonuniform file popularity. Focusing on the modified coded caching scheme (MCCS) recently proposed by Yu, etal., we formulate the cache placement optimization problem for the MCCS to minimize the average delivery rate under nonuniform file popularity, restricting to a class of popularity-first placements. We then present two information-theoretic lower bounds on the average rate for caching with uncoded placement, one for general cache placements and the other restricted to the popularity-first placements. By comparing the average rate of the optimized MCCS with the lower bounds, we prove that the optimized MCCS attains the general lower bound for the two-user case, providing the exact memory-rate tradeoff. Furthermore, it attains the popularity-first-based lower bound for the case of general K users with distinct file requests. In these two cases, our results also reveal that the popularity-first placement is optimal for the MCCS, and zero-padding used in coded delivery incurs no loss of optimality. For the case of K users with redundant file requests, our analysis shows that there may exist a gap between the optimized MCCS and the lower bounds due to zero-padding. We next fully characterize the optimal popularity-first cache placement for the MCCS, which is shown to possess a simple file-grouping structure and can be computed via an efficient algorithm using closed-form expressions. Finally, we extend our study to accommodate both nonuniform file popularity and sizes, where we show that the optimized MCCS attains the lower bound for the two-user case, providing the exact memory-rate tradeoff. Numerical results show that, for general settings, the gap between the optimized MCCS and the lower bound only exists in limited cases and is very small.
