We report on a magneto-transport and quantum oscillations study on high quality single crystals of the transition metal di-tellurides PtTe$_2$ and PdTe$_2$. The de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the magnetization measurements on PtTe$_2$ reveal a complicated, anisotropic band structure characterized by low effective masses and high mobilities for the carriers. Extracted transport parameters for PtTe$_2$ reveal a strong anisotropy which could be related to the tilted nature of Dirac cone. Using a Landau level fan diagram analysis we find at least one Fermi surface orbit with a Berry phase of $pi$ consistent with Dirac electrons for both PtTe$_2$ and PdTe$_2$. The light effective mass and high mobility are also consistent with Dirac electrons in PtTe$_2$. Our results suggest that similar to PdTe$_2$, PtTe$_2$ might also be a three dimensional Dirac semimetal.

We present the systematic de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) quantum oscillations studies on the recently discovered topological Dirac semimetal pyrite PtBi2 single crystals. Remarkable dHvA oscillations were observed at field as low as 1.5 T. From the analys es of dHvA oscillations, we have extracted high quantum mobility, light effective mass and phase shift factor for Dirac fermions in pyrite PtBi2. From the angular dependence of dHvA oscillations, we have mapped out the topology of the Fermi surface and identified additional oscillation frequencies which were not probed by SdH oscillations.
We report the magneto-transport properties of CaAl$_4$ single crystals with $C2/m$ structure at low temperature. CaAl$_4$ exhibits large unsaturated magnetoresistance $sim$3000$%$ at 2.5 K and 14 T. The nonlinear Hall resistivity is observed, which i ndicates the multi-band feature. The first-principles calculations show the electron-hole compensation and the complex Fermi surface in CaAl$_4$, to which the two-band model with over-simplified carrier mobility cant completely apply. Evident quantum oscillations have been observed with B//c and B//ab configurations, from which the nontrivial Berry phase is extracted by the multi-band Lifshitz-Kosevich formula fitting. An electron-type quasi-2D Fermi surface is found by the angle-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, de Haas-van Alphen oscillations and the first-principles calculations. The calculations also elucidate that CaAl$_4$ owns a Dirac nodal line type band structure around the $Gamma$ point in the $Z$-$Gamma$-$L$ plane, which is protected by the mirror symmetry as well as the space inversion and time reversal symmetries. Once the spin-orbit coupling is included, the crossed nodal line opens a negligible gap (less than 3 meV). The open-orbit topology is also found in the electron-type Fermi surfaces, which is believed to help enhance the magnetoresistance observed.
The layered ternary compound TaIrTe$_4$ has been predicted to be a type-II Weyl semimetal with only four Weyl points just above the Fermi energy. Performing magnetotransport measurements on this material we find that the resistivity does not saturate for fields up to 70 T and follows a $ rho sim B^{1.5}$ dependence. Angular-dependent de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements reveal four distinct frequencies. Analyzing these magnetic quantum oscillations by use of density functional theory (DFT) calculations we establish that in TaIrTe$_4$ the Weyl points are located merely $sim$ 40-50 meV above the chemical potential, suggesting that the chemical potential can be tuned into the four Weyl nodes by moderate chemistry or external pressure, maximizing their chiral effects on electronic and magnetotransport properties.
As a newly emergent type-II Dirac semimetal, Platinum Telluride (PtTe2) stands out from other 2D noble-transition-metal dichalcogenides for the unique structure and novel physical properties, such as high carrier mobility, strong electron-phonon coup ling and tunable bandgap, which make the PtTe2 a good candidate for applications in optoelectronics, valleytronics and far infrared detectors. Although the transport properties of PtTe2 have been studied extensively, the dynamics of the nonequilibrium carriers remain nearly uninvestigated. Herein we employ optical pump-terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy (OPTP) to systematically study the photocarrier dynamics of PtTe2 thin films with varying pump fluence, temperature, and film thickness. Upon photoexcitation the THz photoconductivity (PC) of 5 nm PtTe2 film shows abrupt increase initially, while the THz PC changes into negative value in a subpicosecond time scale, followed by a prolonged recovery process that lasted hundreds of picoseconds (ps). This unusual THz PC response observed in the 5 nm PtTe2 film was found to be absent in a 2 nm PtTe2 film. We assign the unexpected negative THz PC as the small polaron formation due to the strong electron-Eg-mode phonon coupling, which is further substantiated by pump fluence- and temperature-dependent measurements as well as the Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, our investigations give a subpicosecond time scale of sequential carrier cooling and polaron formation. The present study provides deep insights into the underlying dynamics evolution mechanisms of photocarrier in type-II Dirac semimetal upon photoexcitation, which is fundamental importance for designing PtTe2-based optoelectronic devices.
Magnetic torque measurements have been performed on a KOs$_2$O$_6$ single crystal in magnetic fields up to 35.3 T and at temperatures down to 0.6 K. The upper critical field is determined to be $sim$30 T. De Haas-van Alphen oscillations are observed. A large mass enhancement of (1+$lambda$) = $m^* / m_{band}$ = 7.6 is found. It is suggested that, for the large upper critical field to be reconciled with Pauli paramagnetic limiting, the observed mass enhancement must be of electron-phonon origin for the most part.
