The electronic properties of monolayer tin dulsulphide (ML-SnS2), a recently synthesized metal dichalcogenide, are studied by a combination of first-principles calculations and tight-binding (TB) approximation. An effective lattice Hamiltonian based on six hybrid sp-like orbitals with trigonal rotation symmetry are proposed to calculate the band structure and density of states for ML-SnS2, which demonstrates good quantitative agreement with relativistic density functional theory calculations in a wide energy range. We show that the proposed TB model can be easily applied to the case of an external electric field, yielding results consistent with those obtained from full Hamiltonian results. In the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, highly degenerate equidistant Landau levels are obtained, showing typical two-dimensional electron gas behavior. Thus, the proposed TB model provides a simple new way in describing novel properties in ML-SnS2.

Two-dimensional CrI3 has attracted much attention as it is reported to be a ferromagnetic semiconductor with the Curie temperature around 45K. By performing first-principles calculations, we find that the magnetic ground state of CrI3 is variable und er biaxial strain. Our theoretical investigations show that the ground state of monolayer CrI3 is ferromagnetic under compression, but becomes antiferromagnetic under tension. Particularly, the transition occurs under a feasible in-plane strain around 1.8%. Accompanied by the transition of the magnetic ground state, it undergoes a transition from magnetic-metal to half-metal to half-semiconductor to spin-relevant semiconductor when strain varies from -15% to 10%. We attribute these transitions to the variation of the d-orbitals of Cr atoms and the p-orbitals of I atoms. Generally, we report a series of magnetic and electronic phase transition in strained CrI3, which will help both theoretical and experimental researchers for further understanding of the tunable electronic and magnetic properties of CrI3 and their analogous.
SnSe monolayer with orthorhombic Pnma GeS structure is an important two-dimensional (2D) indirect band gap material at room temperature. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, we present systematic studies on the electronic and magnetic properties of X (X = Ga, In, As, Sb) atoms doped SnSe monolayer. The calculated electronic structures show that Ga-doped system maintains semiconducting property while In-doped SnSe monolayer is half-metal. The As- and Sb- doped SnSe systems present the characteristics of n-type semiconductor. Moreover, all considered substitutional doping cases induce magnetic ground states with the magnetic moment of 1{mu}B. In addition, the calculated formation energies also show that four types of doped systems are thermodynamic stable. These results provide a new route for the potential applications of doped SnSe monolayer in 2D photoelectronic and magnetic semiconductor devices.
Routine applications of electronic structure theory to molecules and periodic systems need to compute the electron density from given Hamiltonian and, in case of non-orthogonal basis sets, overlap matrices. System sizes can range from few to thousand s or, in some examples, millions of atoms. Different discretization schemes (basis sets) and different system geometries (finite non-periodic vs. infinite periodic boundary conditions) yield matrices with different structures. The ELectronic Structure Infrastructure (ELSI) project provides an open-source software interface to facilitate the implementation and optimal use of high-performance solver libraries covering cubic scaling eigensolvers, linear scaling density-matrix-based algorithms, and other reduced scaling methods in between. In this paper, we present recent improvements and developments inside ELSI, mainly covering (1) new solvers connected to the interface, (2) matrix layout and communication adapted for parallel calculations of periodic and/or spin-polarized systems, (3) routines for density matrix extrapolation in geometry optimization and molecular dynamics calculations, and (4) general utilities such as parallel matrix I/O and JSON output. The ELSI interface has been integrated into four electronic structure code projects (DFTB+, DGDFT, FHI-aims, SIESTA), allowing us to rigorously benchmark the performance of the solvers on an equal footing. Based on results of a systematic set of large-scale benchmarks performed with Kohn-Sham density-functional theory and density-functional tight-binding theory, we identify factors that strongly affect the efficiency of the solvers, and propose a decision layer that assists with the solver selection process. Finally, we describe a reverse communication interface encoding matrix-free iterative solver strategies that are amenable, e.g., for use with planewave basis sets.
Optical properties of graphene are explored by using the generalized tight-binding model. The main features of spectral structures, the form, frequency, number and intensity, are greatly enriched by the complex relationship among the interlayer atomi c interactions, the magnetic quantization and the Coulomb potential energy. Absorption spectra have the shoulders, asymmetric peaks and logarithmic peaks, coming from the band-edge states of parabolic dispersions, the constant-energy loops and the saddle points, respectively. The initial forbidden excitation region is only revealed in even-layer AA stacking systems. Optical gaps and special structures can be generated by an electric field. The delta-function-like structures in magneto-optical spectra, which present the single, twin and double peaks, are associated with the symmetric, asymmetric and splitting Landau-level energy spectra, respectively. The single peaks due to the non-tilted Dirac cones exhibit the nearly uniform intensity. The AAB stacking possesses more absorption structures, compared to the other stackings. The diverse magneto-optical selection rules are mainly determined by the well-behaved, perturbed and undefined Landau modes. The frequent anti-crossings in the magnetic- and electric-field-dependent energy spectra lead to the increase of absorption peaks and the reduced intensities. Part of theoretical calculations are consistent with the experimental measurements, and the others need further detailed examinations.

The OH molecule is currently of great interest from the perspective of ultracold chemistry, quantum fluids, precision measurement and quantum computation. Crucial to these applications are the slowing, guiding, confinement and state control of OH, us ing electric and magnetic fields. In this article, we show that the corresponding eight-dimensional effective ground state Stark-Zeeman Hamiltonian is exactly solvable and explicitly identify the underlying chiral symmetry. Our analytical solution opens the way to insightful characterization of the magnetoelectrostatic manipulation of ground state OH. Based on our results, we also discuss a possible application to the quantum simulation of an imbalanced Ising magnet.
