In this paper, the feasibility of a new downlink transmission mode in massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems is investigated with two types of users, i.e., the users with only statistical channel state information (CSI) and the users with imperfect instantaneous CSI. The problem of downlink precoding design with mixed utilization of statistical and imperfect instantaneous CSI is addressed. We first theoretically analyze the impact of the mutual interference between the two types of users on their achievable rate. Then, considering the mutual interference suppression, we propose an extended zero-forcing (eZF) and an extended maximum ratio transmission (eMRT) precoding methods to minimize the total transmit power of base station and to maximize the received signal power of users, respectively. Thanks to the exploitation of statistical CSI, pilot-based channel estimation is avoided enabling more active users, higher system sum rate and shorter transmission delay. Finally, simulations are performed to validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the advantages of the proposed precoding methods.

In this paper, the design of robust linear precoders for the massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated. The imperfect CSI for each UE obtained at the BS is modeled as statistical C SI under a jointly correlated channel model with both channel mean and channel variance information, which includes the effects of channel estimation error, channel aging and spatial correlation. The design objective is to maximize the expected weighted sum-rate. By combining the minorize-maximize (MM) algorithm with the deterministic equivalent method, an algorithm for robust linear precoder design is derived. The proposed algorithm achieves a stationary point of the expected weighted sum-rate maximization problem. To reduce the computational complexity, two low-complexity algorithms are then derived. One for the general case, and the other for the case when all the channel means are zeros. For the later case, it is proved that the beam domain transmission is optimal, and thus the precoder design reduces to the power allocation optimization in the beam domain. Simulation results show that the proposed robust linear precoder designs apply to various mobile scenarios and achieve high spectral efficiency.
We introduce a framework for linear precoder design over a massive multiple-input multiple-output downlink system and in presence of nonlinear power amplifiers (PAs). By studying the spatial characteristics of the distortion, we demonstrate that conv entional linear precoding techniques steer nonlinear distortions in the direction of the users. We show that, by taking into account PA nonlinearity characteristics, one can design linear precoders that reduce, and in single-user scenarios, even remove completely the distortion transmitted in the direction of the users. This, however, is achieved at the price of a considerably reduced array gain. To address this issue, we present precoder optimization algorithms which simultaneously take into account the effects of array gain, distortion, multiuser interference, and receiver noise. Specifically, we derive an expression for the achievable sum rate and propose an iterative algorithm that attempts to find the precoding matrix maximizing this expression. Moreover, using a model for PA power consumption, we propose an algorithm that attempts to find the precoding matrix minimizing the consumed power for a given minimum achievable sum rate. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed distortion-aware precoding techniques yield considerable improvements in terms of spectral and energy efficiency compared to conventional linear precoding techniques.

This paper investigates the two-timescale transmission design for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the beamforming at the base station (BS) is adapted to the rapidly-changing instantaneous channel state information (CSI), while the passive beamforming at the RIS is adapted to the slowly-changing statistical CSI. Specifically, we first propose a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator to obtain the aggregated channel from the users to the BS in each channel coherence interval. Based on the estimated channel, we apply the low-complexity maximal ratio combining (MRC) beamforming at the BS, and then derive the ergodic achievable rate in a closed form expression. To draw design insights, we perform a detailed theoretical analysis departing from the derived ergodic achievable rate. If the BS-RIS channel is Rician distributed, we prove that the transmit power can be scaled proportionally to $1/M$, as the number of BS antennas, $M$, grows to infinity while maintaining a non-zero rate. If the BS-RIS channel is Rayleigh distributed, the transmit power can be scaled either proportionally to $1/sqrt{M}$ as $M$ grows large, or proportionally to $1/N$ as the number of reflecting elements, $N$, grows large, while still maintaining a non-zero rate. By capitalizing on the derived expression of the data rate under the statistical knowledge of the CSI, we maximize the minimum user rate by designing the passive beamforming at the RIS. Numerical results confirm that, even in the presence of imperfect CSI, the integration of an RIS in massive MIMO systems results in promising performance gains. In addition, the obtained results reveal that it is favorable to place the RIS close to the users rather than close to the BS.
In this paper, we investigate the quantization and the feedback of downlink spatial covariance matrix for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with cascaded precoding. Massive MIMO has gained a lot of attention recently because of it s ability to significantly improve the network performance. To reduce the overhead of downlink channel estimation and uplink feedback in frequency-division duplex massive MIMO systems, cascaded precoding has been proposed, where the outer precoder is implemented using traditional limited feedback while the inner precoder is determined by the spatial covariance matrix of the channels. In massive MIMO systems, it is difficult to quantize the spatial covariance matrix because of its large size caused by the huge number of antennas. In this paper, we propose a spatial spectrum based approach for the quantization and the feedback of the spatial covariance matrix. The proposed inner precoder can be viewed as modulated discrete prolate spheroidal sequences and thus achieve much smaller spatial leakage than the traditional discrete Fourier transform submatrix based precoding. Practical issues for the application of the proposed approach are also addressed in this paper.
This paper investigates user cooperation in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with cascaded precoding. The high-dimensional physical channel in massive MIMO systems can be converted into a low-dimensional effective channel through the inner precoder to reduce the overhead of channel estimation and feedback. The inner precoder depends on the spatial covariance matrix of the channels, and thus the same precoder can be used for different users as long as they have the same spatial covariance matrix. Spatial covariance matrix is determined by the surrounding environment of user terminals. Therefore, the users that are close to each other will share the same spatial covariance matrix. In this situation, it is possible to achieve user cooperation by sharing receiver information through some dedicated link, such as device-to-device communications. To reduce the amount of information that needs to be shared, we propose a decoding codebook based scheme, which can achieve user cooperation without the need of channel state information. Moreover, we also investigate the amount of bandwidth required to achieve efficient user cooperation. Simulation results show that user cooperation can improve the capacity compared to the non-cooperation scheme.
