Realistic oxide materials are often semiconductors, in particular at elevated temperatures, and their surfaces contain undercoordiated atoms at structural defects such as steps and corners. Using hybrid density-functional theory and ab initio atomistic thermodynamics, we investigate the interplay of bond-making, bond-breaking, and charge-carrier trapping at the corner defects at the (100) surface of a p-doped MgO in thermodynamic equilibrium with an O2 atmosphere. We show that by manipulating the coordination of surface atoms one can drastically change and even reverse the order of stability of reduced versus oxidized surface sites.

By applying a genetic algorithm in a cascade approach of increasing accuracy, we calculate the composition and structure of MgMOx clusters at realistic temperatures and oxygen pressures. The stable and metastable systems are identified by ab initio a tomistic thermodynamics. We find that small clusters (M <= 5) are in thermodynamic equilibrium when x > M. The non-stoichiometric clusters exhibit peculiar magnetic behavior, suggesting the possibility of tuning magnetic properties by changing environmental pressure and temperature conditions. Furthermore, we show that density-functional theory (DFT) with a hybrid exchange-correlation (xc) functional is needed for predicting accurate phase diagrams of metal-oxide clusters. Neither a (sophisticated) force field nor DFT with (semi)local xc functionals are sufficient for even a qualitative prediction.

We investigate effects of doping on formation energy and concentration of oxygen vacancies at a metal oxide surface, using MgO (100) as an example. Our approach employs density-functional theory, where the performance of the exchange-correlation func tional is carefully analyzed, and the functional is chosen according to a fundamental condition on DFT ionization energies. The approach is further validated by CCSD(T) calculations for embedded clusters. We demonstrate that the concentration of oxygen vacancies at a doped oxide surface is largely determined by formation of a macroscopically extended space charge region.
We have performed cascade genetic algorithm and ab initio atomistic thermodynamics under the framework of first-principles density functional theory to study the (meta-)stability of a wide range of LixNy clusters. We found that hybrid xc-functional i s essential to address this problem as a local/semi-local functional simply fails even to predict a qualitative prediction. Most importantly, we find that though in bulk Lithium Nitride, Li rich phase, i.e. Li3N, is the stable stoichiometry, in small LixNy clusters N-rich phases are more stable at thermodynamic equilibrium. We further show a that these N-rich clusters are promising hydrogen storage material because of their easy adsorption and desorption ability at respectively low (< 300K) and moderately high temperature (> 600K).
We investigate the surface- and bulk-like properties of the pristine (110)-surface of silver using threshold photoemission by excitation with light of 5.9 eV. Using a momentum microscope, we identified two distinct transitions along the $overline{Gam ma},overline{textrm{Y}}$-direction of the crystal. The first one is a so far unknown surface resonance for the (110) noble metal surface, exhibiting an exceptionally large bulk character, that has so far been elusive in surface sensitive experiments. The second one stems from the well known bulk-like Mahan cone oriented along the $Gamma L$-direction inside the crystal but projected onto the (110)-surface cut. The existence of the new state is confirmed by photocurrent calculations and its character analyzed.
We report an experimental and theoretical analysis of the root(3)xroot(3)-R30 and 2x2 reconstructions on the MgO (111) surface combining transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and reasonably accurate density functional ca lculations using the meta-GGA functional TPSS. The experimental data clearly shows that the surfaces contain significant coverages of hydroxyl terminations, even after UHV annealing, and as such cannot be the structures which have been previously reported. For the 2x2 surfaces a relatively simple structural framework is detailed which fits all the experimental and theoretical data. For the root(3)xroot(3) there turn out to be two plausible structures and neither the experimental nor theoretical results can differentiate between the two within error. However, by examining the conditions under which the surface is formed we describe a kinetic route for the transformation between the different reconstructions that involves mobile hydroxyl groups and protons, and relatively immobile cations, which strongly suggests only one of the two root(3)xroot(3) structures.
