The rectification effect on the propagation of solitary waves in the symmetric Y-shaped granular chain is numerically investigated in this Letter. A heterojunction with mass mismatch occurs at the position of Y-junction by adjusting the branch angle. And the heavy-light heterojunction is more favorable for the solitary wave passing. The energy rectification efficiency can be improved by adjusting the branch angle and the direction of incident solitary wave. The results have particularly practical significance for the potential design of acoustic diode devices.
In order to better understand the minimal ingredients for thermal rectification, we perform a detailed investigation of a simple spin chain, namely, the open XX model with a Lindblad dynamics involving global dissipators. We use a Jordan-Wigner trans
formation to derive a mathematical formalism to compute the heat currents and other properties of the steady state. We have rigorous results to prove the occurrence of thermal rectification even for slightly asymmetrical chains. Interestingly, we describe cases where the rectification does not decay to zero as we increase the system size, that is, the rectification remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. We also describe some numerical results for more asymmetrical chains. The presence of thermal rectification in this simple model indicates that the phenomenon is of general occurrence in quantum spin systems.
Experimental results and their interpretations are presented on the nonlinear acoustic effects of multiple scattered elastic waves in unconsolidated granular media. Short wave packets with a central frequency higher than the so-called cut-off frequen
cy of the medium are emitted at one side of the statically stressed slab of glass beads and received at the other side after multiple scattering and nonlinear interactions. Typical signals are strongly distorted compared to their initially radiated shape both due to nonlinearity and scattering. It is shown that acoustic waves with a deformation amplitude much lower than the mean static deformation of the contacts in the medium can modify the elastic properties of the medium, especially for the weak contact skeleton part. This addresses the problem of reproducibility of granular structures during and after acoustic excitation, which is necessary to understand in the non destructive testing of the elastic properties of granular media by acoustic methods. Coda signal analysis is shown to be a powerful time-resolved tool to monitor slight modifications in the elastic response of an unconsolidated granular structure.
An interesting aspect of complex plasma is its ability to self-organize into a variety of structural configurations and undergo transitions between these states. A striking phenomenon is the isotropic-to-string transition observed in electrorheologic
al complex plasma under the influence of a symmetric ion wakefield. Such transitions have been investigated using the Plasma Kristall-4 (PK-4) microgravity laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). Recent experiments and numerical simulations have shown that, under PK-4 relevant discharge conditions, the seemingly homogeneous DC discharge column is highly inhomogeneous, with large axial electric field oscillations associated with ionization waves occurring on microsecond time scales. A multi-scale numerical model of the dust-plasma interactions is employed to investigate the role of the electric field on the charge of individual dust grains, the ion wakefield, and the order of string-like structures. Results are compared to dust strings formed in similar conditions in the PK-4 experiment.
This paper reexamines the physical roles of trapped and passing electrons in electron Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal (BGK) solitary waves, also called the BGK phase space electron holes (EH). It is shown that the charge density variation in the vicinity of
the solitary potential is a net balance of the negative charge from trapped electrons and positive charge due to the decrease of the passing electron density. A BGK EH consists of electron density enhancements as well as a density depletion, instead of only the density depletion as previously thought. The shielding of the positive core is not a thermal screening by the ambient plasma, but achieved by trapped electrons oscillating inside the potential energy trough. The total charge of a BGK EH is therefore zero. Two separated EHs do not interact and the concept of negative mass is not needed. These features are independent of the strength of the nonlinearity. BGK EHs do not require thermal screening, and their size is thus not restricted to be greater than the Debye length $lambda_D$. Our analysis predicts that BGK EHs smaller than $lambda_D$ can exist. A width($delta$)-amplitude($psi$) relation of an inequality form is obtained for BGK EHs in general. For empty-centered EHs with potential amplitude $gg 1$, we show that the width-amplitude relation of the form $deltaproptosqrt{psi}$ is common to bell-shaped potentials. For $psill 1$, the width approaches zero faster than $sqrt{psi}$.
The existence of stationary solitary waves in symmetric and non-symmetric complex potentials is studied by means of Melnikovs perturbation method. The latter provides analytical conditions for the existence of such waves that bifurcate from the homog
eneous nonlinear modes of the system and are located at specific positions with respect to the underlying potential. It is shown that the necessary conditions for the existence of continuous families of stationary solitary waves, as they arise from Melnikov theory, provide general constraints for the real and imaginary part of the potential, that are not restricted to symmetry conditions or specific types of potentials. Direct simulations are used to compare numerical results with the analytical predictions, as well as to investigate the propagation dynamics of the solitary waves.
