Optical pump-THz probe spectroscopy is used to investigate the exciton formation dynamics and its intensity dependence in bulk Ge. Associated with the intra-excitonic 1s-2p transition, the gradual build-up of an absorption peak around 3.1 meV (0.75 THz) signifies the delayed exciton formation after optical pump which is accelerated for higher excitation densities. Analyzing the spectral shape of this THz absorption resonance, two distinct resonances are found which are attributed to the mass-anisotropy of L valley electrons via a microscopic theory.

Optical orientation experiments have been performed in GaAs epilayers with photoexcitation energies in the 3 eV region yielding the photogeneration of spin-polarized electrons in the satellite L valley. We demonstrate that a significant fraction of t he electron spin memory can be conserved when the electron is scattered from the L to the $Gamma$ valley following an energy relaxation of several hundreds of meV. Combining these high energy photo-excitation experiments with time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy of $Gamma$ valley spin-polarized photogenerated electrons allows us to deduce a typical L valley electron spin relaxation time of 200 fs, in agreement with theoretical calculations.

Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers have emerged as promising candidates for future valleytronics-based quantum information technologies. Two distinct momentum-states of tightly-bound electron-hole pairs in these materials can b e deterministically initialized via irradiation with circularly polarized light. Here, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of such a valley polarization in monolayer tungsten diselenide by means of time-resolved Kerr reflectometry. The observed Kerr signal in our sample stems exclusively from charge-neutral excitons. Our findings support the picture of a fast decay of the valley polarization of bright excitons due to radiative recombination, intra-conduction-band spin-flip transitions, intervalley-scattering processes, and the formation of long-lived valley-polarized dark states.

Optical interband transitions in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides such as WSe2 and MoS2 are governed by chiral selection rules. This allows efficient optical initialization of an electron in a specific K-valley in momentum space. Here we pr obe the valley dynamics in monolayer WSe2 by monitoring the emission and polarization dynamics of the well separated neutral excitons (bound electron hole pairs) and charged excitons (trions) in photoluminescence. The neutral exciton photoluminescence intensity decay time is about 4ps, whereas the trion emission occurs over several tens of ps. The trion polarization dynamics shows a partial, fast initial decay within tens of ps before reaching a stable polarization of about 20%, for which a typical valley polarization decay time larger than 1ns can be inferred. This is a clear signature of stable, optically initialized valley polarization.
The coupling between spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom plays an important role in a wide range of fundamental phenomena. Monolayer semiconducting transitional metal dichalcogenides have emerged as an outstanding platform for studying these coupling effects because they possess unique spin-valley locking physics for hosting rich excitonic species and the reduced screening for strong Coulomb interactions. Here, we report the observation of multiple valley phonons, phonons with momentum vectors pointing to the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone, and the resulting exciton complexes in the monolayer semiconductor WSe2. From Lande g-factor and polarization analyses of photoluminescence peaks, we find that these valley phonons lead to efficient intervalley scattering of quasi particles in both exciton formation and relaxation. This leads to a series of photoluminescence peaks as valley phonon replicas of dark trions. Using identified valley phonons, we also uncovered an intervalley exciton near charge neutrality, and extract its short-range electron-hole exchange interaction to be about 10 meV. Our work not only identifies a number of previously unknown 2D excitonic species, but also shows that monolayer WSe2 is a prime candidate for studying interactions between spin, pseudospin, and zone-edge phonons.

The photoluminescence (PL) and absorption experiments have been performed in GaSe slab with incident light polarized perpendicular to c-axis of sample at 10K. An obvious energy difference of about 34meV between exciton absorption peak and PL peak (th e highest energy peak) is observed. By studying the temperature dependence of PL spectra, we attribute it to energy difference between free exciton and bound exciton states, where main exciton absorption peak comes from free exciton absorption, and PL peak are attributed to recombination of bound exciton at 10K. This strong bound exciton effect is stable up to 50K. Moreover, the temperature dependence of integrated PL intensity and PL lifetime reveals that a non-radiative process, with active energy extracted as 0.5meV, dominates PL emission.
