Here we define a procedure for evaluating KL-projections (I- and rI-projections) of channels. These can be useful in the decomposition of mutual information between input and outputs, e.g. to quantify synergies and interactions of different orders, as well as information integration and other related measures of complexity. The algorithm is a generalization of the standard iterative scaling algorithm, which we here extend from probability distributions to channels (also known as transition kernels).

Interference alignment (IA) has recently emerged as a promising interference mitigation technique for interference networks. In this letter, we focus on the IA non-iterative transceiver design problem in a multiple-input-multiple-output interfering b roadcast channel (MIMO-IBC), and observed that there is previously unexploited flexibility in different permutations of user ordering. By choosing a good user ordering for a pre-determined IA inter-channel-interference allocation, an improved transceiver design can be accomplished. In order to achieve a more practical performance-complexity tradeoff, a suboptimal user ordering algorithm is proposed. Simulation shows the proposed suboptimal user ordering algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance compared to the optimal ordering while exhibiting only moderate computational complexity.

This paper considers a Gaussian multiple-access channel with random user activity where the total number of users $ell_n$ and the average number of active users $k_n$ may grow with the blocklength $n$. For this channel, it studies the maximum number of bits that can be transmitted reliably per unit-energy as a function of $ell_n$ and $k_n$. When all users are active with probability one, i.e., $ell_n = k_n$, it is demonstrated that if $k_n$ is of an order strictly below $n/log n$, then each user can achieve the single-user capacity per unit-energy $(log e)/N_0$ (where $N_0/ 2$ is the noise power) by using an orthogonal-access scheme. In contrast, if $k_n$ is of an order strictly above $n/log n$, then the capacity per unit-energy is zero. Consequently, there is a sharp transition between orders of growth where interference-free communication is feasible and orders of growth where reliable communication at a positive rate per unit-energy is infeasible. It is further demonstrated that orthogonal-access schemes in combination with orthogonal codebooks, which achieve the capacity per unit-energy when the number of users is bounded, can be strictly suboptimal. When the user activity is random, i.e., when $ell_n$ and $k_n$ are different, it is demonstrated that if $k_nlog ell_n$ is sublinear in $n$, then each user can achieve the single-user capacity per unit-energy $(log e)/N_0$. Conversely, if $k_nlog ell_n$ is superlinear in $n$, then the capacity per unit-energy is zero. Consequently, there is again a sharp transition between orders of growth where interference-free communication is feasible and orders of growth where reliable communication at a positive rate is infeasible that depends on the asymptotic behaviours of both $ell_n$ and $k_n$. It is further demonstrated that orthogonal-access schemes, which are optimal when $ell_n = k_n$, can be strictly suboptimal.
This paper presents an iterative geometric mean decomposition (IGMD) algorithm for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications. In contrast to the existing GMD algorithms, the proposed IGMD does not require the explicit computation of the geometric mean of positive singular values of the channel matrix and hence is more suitable for hardware implementation. The proposed IGMD has a regular structure and can be easily adapted to solve problems with different dimensions. We show that the proposed IGMD is guaranteed to converge to the perfect GMD under certain sufficient condition. Three different constructions of the proposed algorithm are proposed and compared through computer simulations. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm quickly attains comparable performance to that of the true GMD within only a few iterations.

MIMO interference network optimization is important for increasingly crowded wireless communication networks. We provide a new algorithm, named Dual Link algorithm, for the classic problem of weighted sum-rate maximization for MIMO multiaccess channe ls (MAC), broadcast channels (BC), and general MIMO interference channels with Gaussian input and a total power constraint. For MIMO MAC/BC, the algorithm finds optimal signals to achieve the capacity region boundary. For interference channels with Gaussian input assumption, two of the previous state-of-the-art algorithms are the WMMSE algorithm and the polite water-filling (PWF) algorithm. The WMMSE algorithm is provably convergent, while the PWF algorithm takes the advantage of the optimal transmit signal structure and converges the fastest in most situations but is not guaranteed to converge in all situations. It is highly desirable to design an algorithm that has the advantages of both algorithms. The dual link algorithm is such an algorithm. Its fast and guaranteed convergence is important to distributed implementation and time varying channels. In addition, the technique and a scaling invariance property used in the convergence proof may find applications in other non-convex problems in communication networks.
