An efficient density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm is presented and applied to Y-junctions, systems with three arms of $n$ sites that meet at a central site. The accuracy is comparable to DMRG of chains. As in chains, new sites are always bonded to the most recently added sites and the superblock Hamiltonian contains only new or once renormalized operators. Junctions of up to $N = 3n + 1 approx 500$ sites are studied with antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg exchange $J$ between nearest-neighbor spins $S$ or electron transfer $t$ between nearest neighbors in half-filled Hubbard models. Exchange or electron transfer is exclusively between sites in two sublattices with $N_A e N_B$. The ground state (GS) and spin densities $ rho_r = <S^z_r >$ at site $r$ are quite different for junctions with $S$ = 1/2, 1, 3/2 and 2. The GS has finite total spin $S_G = 2S (S)$ for even (odd) $N$ and for $M_G =S_G$ in the $S_G$ spin manifold, $rho_r > 0 (< 0)$ at sites of the larger (smaller) sublattice. $S$ = 1/2 junctions have delocalized states and decreasing spin densities with increasing $N$. $S$ = 1 junctions have four localized $S_z = 1/2$ states at the end of each arm and centered on the junction, consistent with localized states in $S$ = 1 chains with finite Haldane gap. The GS of $S$ = 3/2 or 2 junctions of up to 500 spins is a spin density wave (SDW) with increased amplitude at the ends of arms or near the junction. Quantum fluctuations completely suppress AF order in $S$ = 1/2 or 1 junctions, as well as in half-filled Hubbard junctions, but reduce rather than suppress AF order in $S$ = 3/2 or 2 junctions.

Recent interest in honeycomb lattice materials has focused on their potential to host quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. Variations in bond angles and spin allow a range of interesting behaviors on this lattice, from the predicted QSL ground state of the Kitaev model to exotic magnetic orders. Here we report the physical properties of two compounds with rare earths on an approximate honeycomb lattice. The isostructural compounds Nd$_2$S$_5$Sn (J = $frac{9}{2}$) and Pr$_2$S$_5$Sn (J = 4) permit a direct comparison of half-integer versus integer spins on this lattice. We find strikingly different magnetic properties for the two compounds. Nd$_2$S$_5$Sn orders antiferromagnetically at T$_N$ $approx$ 2.5 K, and undergoes several magnetic transitions to other ordered states under applied field. Pr$_2$S$_5$Sn displays no magnetic ordering transition above T = 0.41 K, and may be proximate to a spin liquid state.

The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, which can deal with a large active space composed of tens of orbitals, is nowadays widely used as an efficient addition to traditional complete active space (CAS)-based approaches. In this paper , we present the DMRG algorithm with a multi-level (ML) control of the active space based on chemical intuition-based hierarchical orbital ordering, which is called as ML-DMRG with its self-consistent field variant ML-DMRG-SCF. Ground and excited state calculations of H2O, N2, indole, and Cr2 with comparisons to DMRG references using fixed number of kept states (M) illustrate that MLtype DMRG calculations can obtain noticeable efficiency gains. It is also shown that the orbital re-ordering based on hierarchical multiple active subspaces may be beneficial for reducing computational time for not only ML-DMRG calculations but also DMRG ones with fixed M values.

A quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetically polarized one-dimensional leads is studied numerically using the density matrix renormalization group method. Several real space properties and the local density of states at the dot are computed. It is show n that this local density of states is suppressed by the parallel polarization of the leads. In this case we are able to estimate the length of the Kondo cloud, and to relate its behavior to that suppression. Another important result of our study is that the tunnel magnetoresistance as a function of the quantum dot on-site energy is minimum and negative at the symmetric point.
We introduce the transcorrelated Density Matrix Renormalization Group (tcDMRG) theory for the efficient approximation of the energy for strongly correlated systems. tcDMRG encodes the wave function as a product of a fixed Jastrow or Gutzwiller correl ator and a matrix product state. The latter is optimized by applying the imaginary-time variant of time-dependent (TD) DMRG to the non-Hermitian transcorrelated Hamiltonian. We demonstrate the efficiency of tcDMRG at the example of the two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard Hamiltonian, a notoriously difficult target for the DMRG algorithm, for different sizes, occupation numbers, and interaction strengths. We demonstrate fast energy convergence of tcDMRG, which indicates that tcDMRG could increase the efficiency of standard DMRG beyond quasi-monodimensional systems and provides a generally powerful approach toward the dynamic correlation problem of DMRG.
The emergence of the Haldane Chern insulator state due to strong short range repulsive interactions in the half-filled fermionic spinless honeycomb lattice model has been proposed and challenged with different methods and yet it still remains controv ersial. In this work we revisit the problem using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method and report numerical evidence supporting i) the absence of the Chern insulator state, ii) two previously unnoticed charge ordered phases and iii) the existence and stability of all the non-topological competing orders that were found previously within mean field. In addition, we discuss the nature of the corresponding phase transitions based on our numerical data. Our work establishes the phase diagram of the half-filled honeycomb lattice model tilting the balance towards the absence of a Chern insulator phase for this model.
