We report the discovery of CMA, a metal with strong magnetic anisotropy and moderate electronic correlations. Magnetization measurements find a Curie-Weiss moment of $0.83,mathrm{mu_B}$/Mn, significantly reduced from the Hunds rule value, and the magnetic entropy obtained from specific heat measurements is correspondingly small, only $approx 9$ % of $R mathrm{ln},2$. These results imply that the Mn magnetism is highly itinerant, a conclusion supported by density functional theory calculations that find strong Mn-Al hybridization. Consistent with the layered nature of the crystal structure, the magnetic susceptibility $chi$ is anisotropic below 20 K, with a maximum ratio of $chi_{[010]}/chi_{[001]}approx 3.5$. A strong power-law divergence $chi(T)sim T^{-1.2}$ below 20 K implies incipient ferromagnetic order, and an Arrott plot analysis of the magnetization suggests a vanishingly low Curie temperature $T_Csim 0$. Our experiments indicate that CMA~is a rare example of a Mn-based weak itinerant magnet that is poised on the verge of ferromagnetic order.

The orthorhombic compound NdFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ has been studied by powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction. Below $T_N$ = 3.9 K, the Nd$^{3+}$ magnetic moments order in a double-$k$ [$mathbf{k}_1 = (0, frac{3}{4}, 0)$, $mathbf{k}_2 = (0, frac{1}{4 }, 0)$] collinear magnetic structure, whose unit cell consists of four orthorhombic units in the $b$ direction. The refinements show that this structure consists of (0 1 0) ferromagnetic planes stacked along $b$, in which the moments are oriented parallel to $a$ (the easy anisotropy axis according to bulk magnetization measurements) and nearly equal in magnitude ($approx 1.7-1.9 mu_B$). The alternating 8-plane sequence providing the best agreement to the data turns out to be that which yields the lowest exchange energy if one assumes antiferromagnetic near-neighbor exchange interactions with $J_1 gg J_2, J_3$. With increasing temperature, the single-crystal measurements indicate the suppression of the $mathbf{k}_2$ component at $T = 2.7$ K, supporting the idea that the anomalies previously observed around 2--2.5 K result from a squaring transition. In a magnetic field applied along the $a$ axis, the magnetic Bragg satellites disappear at $H_c = 2.45$ T, in agreement with earlier measurements. Comparisons are made with related magnetic orders occurring in Ce$T_2$Al$_{10}$ ($T$: Ru, Os) and TbFe$_2$Al$_{10}$.
We studied the transport properties of CeRu_2Al_10 single crystals. All the transport properties show largely anisotropic behaviors below T_0. Those along the a- and c-axes show similar behaviors, but are different from those along the b-axis. This s uggests that the system could be viewed as a two-dimensional system. The results of the thermal conductivity and thermoelectric power could be explained by assuming the singlet ground state below T_0. However, the ground state is not simple but has some kind of structure within a spin gap.
Neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies of a polycrystalline SrCr$_2$As$_2$ sample reveal that this compound is an itinerant G-type antiferromagnet below the N${rm acute{e}}$el temperature $T_{textrm N}$ = 590(5) K with the Cr magneti c moments aligned along the tetragonal $c$ axis. The system remains tetragonal to the lowest measured temperature ($sim$12 K). The lattice parameter ratio $c/a$ and the magnetic moment saturate at about the same temperature below $sim$ 200 K, indicating a possible magnetoelastic coupling. The ordered moment, $mu=1.9(1)~mu_{rm B}$/Cr, measured at $T = 12$ K, is significantly reduced compared to its localized value ($4~mu_{rm B}$/Cr) due to the itinerant character brought about by the hybridization between the Cr $3d$ and As $4p$ orbitals.
The intermetallic compound PFA that possesses a three-dimensional network structure of Al polyhedra centered at the transition metal element Fe and the rare earth Pr is investigated through neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering in order to elucidate the magnetic ground state of Pr and Fe and the crystal field effects of Pr. Our neutron diffraction study confirms long-range magnetic order of Pr below $T_N $ = 4.5~K in this compound. Subsequent magnetic structure estimation reveals a magnetic propagation vector $k$ = ($frac{1}{2}$~0~$frac{1}{2}$) with a magnetic moment value of 2.5~$mu_mathrm{B}$/Pr along the orthorhombic $c$-axis and evidence the lack of ordering in the Fe sublattice. The inelastic neutron scattering study reveals one crystalline electric field excitation near 19~meV at 5~K in PFA. The energy-integrated intensity of the 19~meV excitation as a function of |$Q$| $(A^{-1})$ follows the square of the magnetic form factor of Pr$^{3+}$ thereby confirming that the inelastic excitation belongs to the Pr sublattice. The second sum rule applied to the dynamic structure factor indicates only 1.6(2)~$mu_mathrm{B}$ evolving at the 19~meV peak compared to the 3.58~$mu_mathrm{B}$ for free Pr$^{3+}$, indicating that the crystal field ground state is magnetic and the missing moment is associated with the resolution limited quasi-elastic line. The magnetic order occurring in Pr in PFA is counter-intuitive to the symmetry-allowed crystal field level scheme, hence, is suggestive of exchange-mediated mechanisms of ordering stemming from the magnetic ground state of the crystal field levels.
Electron correlations tend to generate local magnetic moments that usually order if the lattices are not too frustrated. The hexagonal compound SrRu$_2$O$_6$ has a relatively high Neel temperature but small local moments, which seem to be at odds wit h the nominal valence of Ru$^{5+}$ in the $t_{2g}^3$ configuration. Here, we investigate the electronic property of SrRu$_2$O$_6$ using density functional theory (DFT) combined with dynamical-mean-field theory (DMFT). We find that the strong hybridization between Ru $d$ and O $p$ states results in a Ru valence that is closer to $+4$, leading to the small ordered moment $sim1.2mu_B$. While this is consistent with a DFT prediction, correlation effects are found to play a significant role. The local moment per Ru site remains finite $sim2.3mu_B$ in the whole temperature range investigated. Due to the lower symmetry, the $t_{2g}$ manifold is split and the quasiparticle weight is renormalized significantly in the $a_{1g}$ state, while the renormalization in $e_g$ states is about a factor of 2--3 weaker. Our theoretical Neel temperature $sim700$~K is in reasonable agreement with experimental observations. SrRu$_2$O$_6$ is a unique system in which localized and itinerant electrons coexist with the proximity to an orbitally-selective Mott transition within the $t_{2g}$ sector.
