This paper presents a study of the two-stream instability of an electron beam propagating in a finite-size plasma placed between two electrodes. It is shown that the growth rate in such a system is much smaller than that of an infinite plasma or a finite size plasma with periodic boundary conditions. Even if the width of the plasma matches the resonance condition for a standing wave, a spatially growing wave is excited instead with the growth rate small compared to that of the standing wave in a periodic system. The approximate expression for this growth rate is $gamma approx (1/13)omega_{pe}(n_{b}/n_{p})(Lomega_{pe}/v_{b})ln (Lomega_{pe}/v_{b})[ 1-0.18cos ( Lomega_{pe}/v_{b}+{pi }/{2}) ]$, where $omega_{pe}$ is the electron plasma frequency, $n_{b}$ and $n_{p}$ are the beam and the plasma densities, respectively, $v_{b}$ is the beam velocity, and $L$ is the plasma width. The frequency, wave number and the spatial and temporal growth rates as functions of the plasma size exhibit band structure. The amplitude of saturation of the instability depends on the system length, not on the beam current. For short systems, the amplitude may exceed values predicted for infinite plasmas by more than an order of magnitude.

A dynamic mitigation mechanism of the two-stream instability is discussed based on a phase control for plasma and fluid instabilities. The basic idea for the dynamic mitigation mechanism by the phase control was proposed in the paper [Phys. Plasmas 1 9, 024503(2012)]. The mitigation method is applied to the two-stream instability in this paper. In general, instabilities appear from the perturbations, and normally the perturbation phase is unknown. Therefore, the instability growth rate is discussed in fluids and plasmas. However, if the perturbation phase is known, the instability growth can be controlled by a superimposition of perturbations imposed actively. For instance, a perturbed driver induces a perturbation to fluids or plasmas; if the perturbation induced by the perturbed driver is oscillated actively by the driver oscillation, the perturbation phase is known and the perturbation amplitude can be controlled, like a feedforward control. The application result shown in this paper demonstrates that the dynamic mitigation mechanism works well to smooth the non-uniformities and mitigate the instabilities in plasmas.
Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of collisionless jets of electrons and positrons in an ambient electron-proton plasma have revealed an acceleration of positrons at the expense of electron kinetic energy. The dominant instability within the jet was a filamentation instability between electrons, protons and positrons. In this work we show that a filamentation instability, between an initially unmagnetized ambient electron-proton plasma at rest and a beam of pair plasma that moves through it at a non-relativistic speed, indeed results in preferential positron acceleration. Filaments form that are filled predominantly with particles with the same direction of their electric current vector. Positron filaments are separated by electromagnetic fields from beam electron filaments. Some particles can cross the field boundary and enter the filament of the other species. Positron filaments can neutralize their net charge by collecting the electrons of the ambient plasma while protons cannot easily follow the beam electron filaments. Positron filaments can thus be compressed to a higher density and temperature than the beam electron filaments. Filament mergers, which take place after the exponential growth phase of the instability has ended, lead to an expansion of the beam electron filaments, which amplifies the magnetic field they generate and induces an electric field in this filament. Beam electrons lose a substantial fraction of their kinetic energy to the electric field. Some positrons in the beam electron filament are accelerated by the induced electric field to almost twice their initial speed. The simulations show that a weaker electric field is induced in the positron filament and particles in this filament hardly change their speed.

To better understanding the principal features of collisionless damping/growing plasma waves we have implemented a demonstrative calculation for the simplest cases of electron waves in two-stream plasmas with the delta-function type electron velocity distribution function of each of the streams with velocities v(1) and v(2). The traditional dispersion equation is reduced to an algebraic 4th order equation, for which numerical solutions are presented for a variant of equal stream densities. In the case of uniform half-infinite slab one finds two dominant type solutions: non-damping forward waves and forward complex conjugated exponentially both damping and growing waves. Beside it in this case there is no necessity of calculation any logarithmically divergent indefinite integrals. The possibility of wave amplifying might be useful in practical applications.
We study the longitudinal stability of beam-plasma systems in the presence of a density inhomogeneity in the background plasma. Previous works have focused on the non-relativistic regime where hydrodynamical models are used to evolve pre-existing Lan gmuir waves within inhomogeneous background plasmas. Here, for the first time we study the problem with kinetic equations in a fully-relativistic way. We do not assume the existence of Langmuir waves, and we focus on the rate and the mechanism by which waves are excited in such systems from an initial perturbation. We derive the structure of the unstable modes and compute an analytical approximation for their growth rates. Our computation is limited to dilute and cold beams, and shows an excellent agreement with particle-in-cell simulations performed using the SHARP code. We show that, due to such an inhomogeneity, the virulent beam-plasma instabilities in the intergalactic medium are not suppressed but their counterparts in the solar wind can be suppressed as evidenced by propagating type-III solar radio bursts.
Interaction of an intense electron beam with a finite-length, inhomogeneous plasma is investigated numerically. The plasma density profile is maximal in the middle and decays towards the plasma edges. Two regimes of the two-stream instability are obs erved. In one regime, the frequency of the instability is the plasma frequency at the density maximum and plasma waves are excited in the middle of the plasma. In the other regime, the frequency of the instability matches the local plasma frequency near the edges of the plasma and the intense plasma oscillations occur near plasma boundaries. The latter regime appears sporadically and only for strong electron beam currents. This instability generates copious amount of suprathermal electrons. The energy transfer to suprathermal electrons is the saturation mechanism of the instability.
