Wireless communication in a network of mobile devices is a challenging and resource demanding task, due to the highly dynamic network topology and the wireless channel randomness. This paper investigates information broadcast schemes in 2D mobile ad-hoc networks where nodes are initially randomly distributed and then move following a random direction mobility model. Based on an in-depth analysis of the popular Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered epidemic broadcast scheme, this paper proposes a novel energy and bandwidth efficient broadcast scheme, named the energy-efficient broadcast scheme, which is able to adapt to fast-changing network topology and channel randomness. Analytical results are provided to characterize the performance of the proposed scheme, including the fraction of nodes that can receive the information and the delay of the information dissemination process. The accuracy of analytical results is verified using simulations driven by both the random direction mobility model and a real world trace.

Network coding is a recently proposed method for transmitting data, which has been shown to have potential to improve wireless network performance. We study network coding for one specific case of multicast, broadcasting, from one source to all nodes of the network. We use network coding as a loss tolerant, energy-efficient, method for broadcast. Our emphasis is on mobile networks. Our contribution is the proposal of DRAGONCAST, a protocol to perform network coding in such a dynamically evolving environment. It is based on three building blocks: a method to permit real-time decoding of network coding, a method to adjust the network coding transmission rates, and a method for ensuring the termination of the broadcast. The performance and behavior of the method are explored experimentally by simulations; they illustrate the excellent performance of the protocol.

We study the minimum latency broadcast scheduling (MLBS) problem in Single-Radio Multi-Channel (SR-MC) wireless ad-hoc networks (WANETs), which are modeled by Unit Disk Graphs. Nodes with this capability have their fixed reception channels, but can s witch their transmission channels to communicate with their neighbors. The single-radio and multi-channel model prevents existing algorithms for single-channel networks achieving good performance. First, the common assumption that one transmission reaches all the neighboring nodes does not hold naturally. Second, the multi-channel dimension provides new opportunities to schedule the broadcast transmissions in parallel. We show MLBS problem in SR-MC WANETs is NP-hard, and present a benchmark algorithm: Basic Transmission Scheduling (BTS), which has approximation ratio of 4k + 12. Here k is the number of orthogonal channels in SR-MC WANETs. Then we propose an Enhanced Transmission Scheduling (ETS) algorithm, improving the approximation ratio to k + 23. Simulation results show that ETS achieves better performance over BTS, and the performance of ETS approaches the lower bound.
We consider the problem of efficient packet dissemination in wireless networks with point-to-multi-point wireless broadcast channels. We propose a dynamic policy, which achieves the broadcast capacity of the network. This policy is obtained by first transforming the original multi-hop network into a precedence-relaxed virtual single-hop network and then finding an optimal broadcast policy for the relaxed network. The resulting policy is shown to be throughput-optimal for the original wireless network using a sample-path argument. We also prove the NP-completeness of the finite-horizon broadcast problem, which is in contrast with the polynomial time solvability of the problem with point-to-point channels. Illustrative simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed broadcast policy in achieving the full broadcast capacity with low delay.

Considering the energy-efficient emergency response, subject to a given set of constraints on emergency communication networks (ECN), this article proposes a hybrid device-to-device (D2D) and device-to-vehicle (D2V) network for collecting and transmi tting emergency information. First, we establish the D2D network from the perspective of complex networks by jointly determining the optimal network partition (ONP) and the temporary data caching centers (TDCC), and thus emergency data can be forwarded and cached in TDCCs. Second, based on the distribution of TDCCs, the D2V network is established by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)-based waypoint and motion planning, which saves the time for wireless transmission and aerial moving. Finally, the amount of time for emergency response and the total energy consumption are simultaneously minimized by a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D), subject to a given set of minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), number of UAVs, transmit power, and energy constraints. Simulation results show that the proposed method significantly improves response efficiency and reasonably controls the energy, thus overcoming limitations of existing ECNs. Therefore, this network effectively solves the key problem in the rescue system and makes great contributions to post-disaster decision-making.

In this paper, we study unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) with the objective to optimize computation offloading with minimum UAV energy consumption. In the considered scenario, a UAV plays the role of an aerial cloudl et to collect and process the computation tasks offloaded by ground users. Given the service requirements of users, we aim to maximize UAV energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, the user transmit power, and computation load allocation. The resulting optimization problem corresponds to nonconvex fractional programming, and the Dinkelbach algorithm and the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique are adopted to solve it. Furthermore, we decompose the problem into multiple subproblems for distributed and parallel problem solving. To cope with the case when the knowledge of user mobility is limited, we adopt a spatial distribution estimation technique to predict the location of ground users so that the proposed approach can still be applied. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for maximizing the energy efficiency of UAV.
