We show that graphene possesses a strong nonlinear optical response in the form of multi-plasmon absorption, with exciting implications in classical and quantum nonlinear optics. Specifically, we predict that graphene nano-ribbons can be used as saturable absorbers with low saturation intensity in the far-infrared and terahertz spectrum. Moreover, we predict that two-plasmon absorption and extreme localization of plasmon fields in graphene nano-disks can lead to a plasmon blockade effect, in which a single quantized plasmon strongly suppresses the possibility of exciting a second plasmon.
Resonance diffraction in the periodic array of graphene micro-ribbons is theoretically studied following a recent experiment [L. Ju et al, Nature Nanotech. 6, 630 (2011)]. Systematic studies over a wide range of parameters are presented. It is shown
We investigate the plasmon dispersion relation and damping rate of collective excitations in a double-layer system consisting of bilayer graphene and GaAs quantum well, separated by a distance, at zero temperature with no interlayer tunneling. We use
We study the spectra and damping of surface plasmon-polaritons in double graphene layer structures. It is shown that application of bias voltage between layers shifts the edge of plasmon absorption associated with the interband transitions. This effe
Epitaxial graphene mesas and ribbons are investigated using terahertz (THz) nearfield microscopy to probe surface plasmon excitation and THz transmission properties on the sub-wavelength scale. The THz near-field images show variation of graphene pro
We consider a hybrid structure formed by graphene and an insulating antiferromagnet, separated by a dielectric of thickness up to $dsimeq 500 ,nm$. When uncoupled, both graphene and the antiferromagnetic surface host their own polariton modes couplin
