The VST Photometric Halpha Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane and Bulge (VPHAS+) is surveying the southern Milky Way in u, g, r, i and Halpha at 1 arcsec angular resolution. Its footprint spans the Galactic latitude range -5 < b < +5 at all longitudes south of the celestial equator. Extensions around the Galactic Centre to Galactic latitudes +/-10 bring in much of the Galactic Bulge. Using model atmospheres and library spectra, we compute main-sequence (u - g), (g - r), (r - i) and (r - Halpha) stellar colours in the Vega system. We report on a preliminary validation of the photometry using test data obtained from two pointings overlapping the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. An example of the (u - g, g - r) and (r - Halpha, r - i) diagrams for a full VPHAS+ survey field is given. Attention is drawn to the opportunities for studies of compact nebulae and nebular morphologies that arise from the image quality being achieved. The value of the u band as the means to identify planetary-nebula central stars is demonstrated by the discovery of the central star of NGC 2899 in survey data. Thanks to its excellent imaging performance, the VST/OmegaCam combination used by this survey is a perfect vehicle for automated searches for reddened early-type stars, and will allow the discovery and analysis of compact binaries, white dwarfs and transient sources.

We present the first results from a new carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the southern Galactic plane being conducted with the Mopra radio telescope in Australia. The 12CO, 13CO and C18O J=1-0 lines are being mapped over the l = 305-345 deg, b = +/- 0.5 deg portion of the 4th quadrant of the Galaxy, at 35 spatial and 0.1 km/s spectral resolution. The survey is being undertaken with two principal science objectives: (i) to determine where and how molecular clouds are forming in the Galaxy and (ii) to probe the connection between molecular clouds and the missing gas inferred from gamma-ray observations. We describe the motivation for the survey, the instrumentation and observing techniques being applied, and the data reduction and analysis methodology. In this paper we present the data from the first degree surveyed, l = 323-324 deg, b = +/- 0.5 deg. We compare the data to the previous CO survey of this region and present metrics quantifying the performance being achieved; the rms sensitivity per 0.1 km/s velocity channel is ~1.5K for 12CO and ~0.7K for the other lines. We also present some results from the region surveyed, including line fluxes, column densities, molecular masses, 12CO/13CO line ratios and 12CO optical depths. We also examine how these quantities vary as a function of distance from the Sun when averaged over the 1 square degree survey area. Approximately 2 x 10E6 MSun of molecular gas is found along the G323 sightline, with an average H2 number density of nH2 ~ 1 cm-3 within the Solar circle. The CO data cubes will be made publicly available as they are published.
Massive OB stars are critical to the ecology of galaxies, and yet our knowledge of OB stars in the Milky Way, fainter than $V sim 12$, remains patchy. Data from the VST Photometric H$alpha$ Survey (VPHAS+) permit the construction of the first deep ca talogues of blue excess-selected OB stars, without neglecting the stellar field. A total of 14900 candidates with 2MASS cross-matches are blue-selected from a 42 square-degree region in the Galactic Plane, capturing the Carina Arm over the Galactic longitude range $282^{circ} lesssim ell lesssim 293^{circ}$. Spectral energy distribution fitting is performed on these candidates combined VPHAS+ $u,g,r,i$ and 2MASS $J,H,K$ magnitudes. This delivers: effective temperature constraints, statistically separating O from early-B stars; high-quality extinction parameters, $A_0$ and $R_V$ (random errors typically $< 0.1$). The high-confidence O-B2 candidates number 5915 and a further 5170 fit to later B spectral type. Spectroscopy of 276 of the former confirms 97% of them. The fraction of emission line stars among all candidate B stars is 7--8% . Greyer ($R_V > 3.5$) extinction laws are ubiquitous in the region, over the distance range 2.5--3 kpc to $sim$10~kpc. Near prominent massive clusters, $R_V$ tends to rise, with particularly large and chaotic excursions to $R_V sim 5$ seen in the Carina Nebula. The data reveal a hitherto unnoticed association of 108 O-B2 stars around the O5If$+$ star LSS 2063 ($ell = 289.77^{circ}$, $b = -1.22^{circ}$). Treating the OB star scale-height as a constant within the thin disk, we find an orderly mean relation between extinction ($A_0$) and distance in the Galactic longitude range, $287.6^{circ} < ell < 293.5^{circ}$, and infer the subtle onset of thin-disk warping. A halo around NGC 3603, roughly a degree in diameter, of $sim$500 O-B2 stars with $4 < A_0 (rm{mag}) < 7$ is noted.
We present observations of fifty square degrees of the Mopra carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the Southern Galactic Plane, covering Galactic longitudes $l = 300$-$350^circ$ and latitudes $|b| le 0.5^circ$. These data have been taken at 0.6 arcminute sp atial resolution and 0.1 km/s spectral resolution, providing an unprecedented view of the molecular clouds and gas of the Southern Galactic Plane in the 109-115 GHz $J = 1$-0 transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O and C$^{17}$O. We present a series of velocity-integrated maps, spectra and position-velocity plots that illustrate Galactic arm structures and trace masses on the order of $sim$10$^{6}$ M$_{odot}$ per square degree; and include a preliminary catalogue of C$^{18}$O clumps located between $l=330$-$340^circ$. Together with information about the noise statistics of the survey these data can be retrieved from the Mopra CO website, the PASA data store and the Harvard Dataverse (doi:10.7910/DVN/LH3BDN ).

The DECam Plane Survey is a five-band optical and near-infrared survey of the southern Galactic plane with the Dark Energy Camera at Cerro Tololo. The survey is designed to reach past the main-sequence turn-off at the distance of the Galactic center through a reddening E(B-V) of 1.5 mag. Typical single-exposure depths are 23.7, 22.8, 22.3, 21.9, and 21.0 mag in the grizY bands, with seeing around 1 arcsecond. The footprint covers the Galactic plane with |b| < 4 degrees, 5 degrees > l > -120 degrees. The survey pipeline simultaneously solves for the positions and fluxes of tens of thousands of sources in each image, delivering positions and fluxes of roughly two billion stars with better than 10 mmag precision. Most of these objects are highly reddened and deep in the Galactic disk, probing the structure and properties of the Milky Way and its interstellar medium. The full survey is publicly available.
