Type IIP Supernovae (SNe) are expected to arise from Red Supergiant stars (RSGs). These stars have observed mass-loss rates that span more than two orders of magnitude, from $< 10^{-6}$ solar masses yr$^{-1}$ to almost $ 10^{-4} $ solar masses yr$^{-1}$. Thermal bremsstrahlung X-ray emission from at least some IIPs should reflect the larger end of the high mass-loss rates. Strangely, no IIP SNe are seen where the X-ray luminosity is large enough to suggest mass-loss rates greater than about $ 10^{-5} $ solar masses yr$^{-1}$. We investigate if this could be due to absorption of the X-ray emission. After carefully studying all the various aspects, we conclude that absorption would not be large enough to prevent us from having detected X-ray emission from high mass-loss rate IIPs. This leads us to the conclusion that there may be an upper limit of $sim 10^{-5} $ solar masses yr$^{-1}$ to the mass-loss rate of Type IIP progenitors, and therefore to the luminosity of RSGs that explode to form Type IIPs. This is turn suggests an upper limit of $leq 19 $ solar masses for the progenitor mass of a Type IIP SN. This limit is close to that obtained by direct detection of IIP progenitors, as well as that suggested by recent stellar evolution calculations. Although the statistics need to be improved, many current indicators support the notion that RSGs above $sim 19 $ solar masses do not explode to form Type IIP SNe.

The progenitors of Type IIP supernovae (SNe) are known to be red supergiants, but their properties are not well determined. We employ hydrodynamical modelling to investigate the explosion characteristics of eight Type IIP supernovae, and the properti es of their progenitor stars. We create evolutionary models using the {sc MESA} stellar evolution code, explode these models, and simulate the optical lightcurves using the {sc STELLA} code. We fit the optical lightcurves, Fe II 5169AA velocity, and photospheric velocity, to the observational data. Recent research has suggested that the progenitors of Type IIP SNe have a zero age main sequence (ZAMS) mass not exceeding $sim18$ M$_{odot}$. Our fits give a progenitor ZAMS mass $leq18$ M$_{odot}$ for seven of the supernovae. Where previous progenitor mass estimates exist, from various sources such as hydrodynamical modelling, multi-wavelength observations, or semi-analytic calculations, our modelling generally tends towards the lower mass values. This result is in contrast to results from previous hydrodynamical modelling, but is consistent with those obtained using general-relativistic radiation-hydrodynamical codes. We do find that one event, SN 2015ba, has a progenitor whose mass is closer to 24 M$_{odot}$ , although we are unable to fit it well. We also derive the amount of $^{56}$Ni required to reproduce the tail of the lightcurve, and find values generally larger than previous estimates. Overall, we find that it is difficult to characterize the explosion by a single parameter, and that a range of parameters is needed.

Type II-plateau supernovae (SNe IIP) are the results of the explosions of red supergiants and are the most common subclass of core-collapse supernovae. Past observations have shown that the outer layers of the ejecta of SNe IIP are largely spherical, but the degree of asphericity increases toward the core. We present evidence for high degrees of asphericity in the inner cores of three recent SNe IIP (SNe 2006my, 2006ov, and 2007aa), as revealed by late-time optical spectropolarimetry. The three objects were all selected to have very low interstellar polarization (ISP), which minimizes the uncertainties in ISP removal and allows us to use the continuum polarization as a tracer of asphericity. The three objects have intrinsic continuum polarizations in the range of 0.83-1.56% in observations taken after the end of the photometric plateau, with the polarization dropping to almost zero at the wavelengths of strong emission lines. Our observations of SN 2007aa at earlier times, taken on the photometric plateau, show contrastingly smaller continuum polarizations (~0.1%). The late-time H-alpha and [O I] line profiles of SN 2006ov provide further evidence for asphericities in the inner ejecta. Such high core polarizations in very ordinary core-collapse supernovae provide further evidence that essentially all core-collapse supernova explosions are highly aspherical, even if the outer parts of the ejecta show only small deviations from spherical symmetry.

The enigmatic type IIP SN 2016X demonstrates the unprecedented asphericity in the nebular H-alpha line profile, the absence of nebular [O I] emission, and the unusual occultation effect due to the internal dust. The hydrodynamic modelling of the bolo metric light curve and expansion velocities suggests that the event is an outcome of the massive star explosion that ejected 28 Msun with the kinetic energy of 1.7x10^51 erg and 0.03 Msun of radioactive Ni-56. We recover the bipolar distribution of Ni-56 from the H-alpha profile via the simulation of the emissivity produced by non-spherical Ni-56 ejecta. The conspicuous effect of the dust absorption in the H-alpha profile rules out the occultation by the dusty sphere or dusty thick disk but turns out consistent with the thin dusty disk-like structure in the plane perpendicular to the bipolar axis. We speculate that the absence of the nebular [O I] emission might originate from the significant cooling of the oxygen-rich matter mediated by CO and SiO molecules.

Type IIP supernovae (SNe IIP), which represent the most common class of core-collapse (CC) SNe, show a rapid increase in continuum polarization just after entering the tail phase. This feature can be explained by a highly asymmetric helium core, whic h is exposed when the hydrogen envelope becomes transparent. Here we report the case of a SN IIP (SN~2017gmr) that shows an unusually early rise of the polarization, $gtrsim 30$ days before the start of the tail phase. This implies that SN~2017gmr is an SN IIP that has very extended asphericity. The asymmetries are not confined to the helium core, but reach out to a significant part of the outer hydrogen envelope, hence clearly indicating a marked intrinsic diversity in the aspherical structure of CC explosions. These observations provide new constraints on the explosion mechanism, where viable models must be able to produce such extended deviations from spherical symmetry, and account for the observed geometrical diversity.
We present results based on follow-up observations of the Type II-plateau supernova (SN) 2013ej at 6 epochs spanning a total duration of $sim$37 d. The $R_{c}$-band linear polarimetric observations were carried out between the end of the plateau and the beginning of the nebular phases as noticed in the photometric light curve. The contribution due to interstellar polarization (ISP) was constrained by using couple of approaches, i.e. based upon the observations of foreground stars lying within 5arcmin, and 10$degr$ radius of the SN location and also investigating the extinction due to the Milky Way and host galaxy towards the SN direction. Our analysis revealed that in general the intrinsic polarization of the SN is higher than the polarization values for the foreground stars and exhibits an increasing trend during our observations. After correcting the ISP of $sim$0.6 per cent, the maximum intrinsic polarization of SN~2013ej is found to be 2.14 $pm$ 0.57 per cent. Such a strong polarization has rarely been seen in Type II-P SNe. If this is the case, i.e., the `polarization bias effect is still negligible, the polarization could be attributed to the asymmetry of the inner ejecta of the SN because the ISP towards the SN location is estimated to be, at most, 0.6 per cent.
