We construct electrically charged Q-balls and boson stars in a model with a scalar self-interaction potential resulting from gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. We discuss the properties of these solutions in detail and emphasize the differences to the uncharged case. We observe that Q-balls can only be constructed up to a maximal value of the charge of the scalar field, while for boson stars the interplay between the attractive gravitational force and the repulsive electromagnetic force determines their behaviour. We find that the vacuum is stable with respect to pair production in the presence of our charged boson stars. We also study the motion of charged, massive test particles in the space-time of boson stars. We find that in contrast to charged black holes the motion of charged test particles in charged boson star space-times is planar, but that the presence of the scalar field plays a crucial role for the qualitative features of the trajectories. Applications of this test particle motion can be made in the study of extreme-mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) as well as astrophysical plasmas relevant e.g. in the formation of accretion discs and polar jets of compact objects.

We consider the lagrangian of a self-interacting complex scalar field admitting generically Q-balls solutions. This model is extended by minimal coupling to electromagnetism and to gravity. A stationnary, axially-symmetric ansatz for the different fi elds is used in order to reduce the classical equations. The system of non-linear partial differential equations obtained becomes a boundary value problem by supplementing a suitable set of boundary conditions. We obtain numerical evidences that the angular excitations of uncharged Q-balls, which exist in flat space-time, get continuously deformed by the Maxwell and the Einstein terms. The electromagnetic and gravitating properties of several solutions, including the spinning Q-balls, are emphasized.
We study static and spherically symmetric charged stars with a nontrivial profile of the scalar field $phi$ in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. The scalar field is coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field $A_{mu}$ with the form $-alpha(phi)F_{mu u}F^{mu u} /4$, where $F_{mu u}=partial_{mu}A_{ u}-partial_{ u} A_{mu}$ is the field strength tensor. Analogous to the case of charged black holes, we show that this type of interaction can induce spontaneous scalarization of charged stars under the conditions $({rm d}alpha/{rm d}phi) (0)=0$ and $({rm d}^2alpha/{rm d}phi^2) (0)>0$. For the coupling $alpha (phi)=exp (-beta phi^2/M_{rm pl}^2)$, where $beta~(<0)$ is a coupling constant and $M_{rm pl}$ is a reduced Planck mass, there is a branch of charged star solutions with a nontrivial profile of $phi$ approaching $0$ toward spatial infinity, besides a branch of general relativistic solutions with a vanishing scalar field, i.e., solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell model. As the ratio $rho_c/rho_m$ between charge density $rho_c$ and matter density $rho_m$ increases toward its maximum value, the mass $M$ of charged stars in general relativity tends to be enhanced due to the increase of repulsive Coulomb force against gravity. In this regime, the appearance of nontrivial branches induced by negative $beta$ of order $-1$ effectively reduces the Coulomb force for a wide range of central matter densities, leading to charged stars with smaller masses and radii in comparison to those in the general relativistic branch. Our analysis indicates that spontaneous scalarization of stars can be induced not only by the coupling to curvature invariants but also by the scalar-gauge coupling in Einstein gravity.
In this paper, we re-examine charged Q-clouds around spherically symmetric, static black holes. In particular, we demonstrate that for fixed coupling constants two different branches of charged scalar clouds exist around Schwarzschild black holes. Th is had not been noticed previously. We find that the new solutions possess a hard wall at maximal possible gauge coupling. This wall separates the interior (containing the black hole horizon), in which the scalar field is trapped in the false vacuum, from the true vacuum exterior. When taking back-reaction onto the space-time into account, we find that at maximal possible back reaction, the black hole solutions corresponding to these two branches either become extremal black holes with diverging scalar field derivative on the horizon or inflating black holes with a second, cosmological horizon which - outside this second horizon - correspond to extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes.
We study angularly excited as well as interacting non-topological solitons, so-called Q-balls and their gravitating counterparts, so-called boson stars in 3+1 dimensions. Q-balls and boson stars carry a non-vanishing Noether charge and arise as solut ions of complex scalar field models in a flat space-time background and coupled minimally to gravity, respectively. We present examples of interacting Q-balls that arise due to angular excitations, which are closely related to the spherical harmonics. We also construct explicit examples of rotating boson stars that interact with non-rotating boson stars. We observe that rotating boson stars tend to absorb the non-rotating ones for increasing, but reasonably small gravitational coupling. This is a new phenomenon as compared to the flat space-time limit and is related to the negative contribution of the rotation term to the energy density of the solutions. In addition, our results indicate that a system of a rotating and non-rotating boson star can become unstable if the direct interaction term in the potential is large enough. This instability is related to the appearance of ergoregions.
We present compact Q-balls in an (Anti-)de Sitter background in D dimensions, obtained with a V-shaped potential of the scalar field. Beyond critical values of the cosmological constant compact Q-shells arise. By including the gravitational back-reac tion, we obtain boson stars and boson shells with (Anti-)de Sitter asymptotics. We analyze the physical properties of these solutions and determine their domain of existence. In four dimensions we address some astrophysical aspects.
