The Li-rich turn-off star in the globular cluster NGC 6397 could represent the smoking gun for some very rare episode of Li enrichment in globular clusters. We aim to understand the nature of the Li enrichment by performing a spectroscopic analysis of the star, in particular of its beryllium (Be) abundance, and by investigating its binary nature. We observe the near UV region where the Beii resonance doublet and the NH bands are located. We could not detect the Beii lines and derive an upper limit of log (Be/H)< -12.2, that is consistent with the Be observed in other stars of the cluster. We could detect a weak G-band, which implies a mild carbon enhancement [C/Fe]$+0.4pm0.2$. We could not detect the UV NH band, and we derive an upper limit [N/Fe]$< 0.0$. For oxygen we could notdetect any of the near UV OH lines, which implies that oxygen cannot be strongly enhanced in this star. This is consistent with the detection of the Oi triplet at 777nm, which is consistent with [O/Fe]~0.5. Combining the UVES and Mike data, we could not detect any variation in the radial velocity greater than 0.95 kms$^{-1}$ over 8 years. The chemical composition of the star strongly resembles that of `first generation NGC6397 stars, with the huge Li as the only deviating abundance. Not detecting Be rules out two possible explanations of the Li overabundance: capture of a substellar body and spallation caused by a nearby type II SNe. Discrepancies are also found with respect to other accretion scenarios, except for contamination by the ejecta of a star that has undergone the RGB Li-flash.

The discrepancy between cosmological Li abundance inferred from Population II dwarf stars and that derived from WMAP/BBNS is still far from being solved. We investigated, as an alternative route, the use of Li abundances in Population II lower RGB sta rs as empirical diagnostic of the cosmological Li. Both theory and observations suggest that the surface A(Li) in red giants after the completion of the first dredge-up and before the RGB bump, are significantly less sensitive to the efficiency of atomic diffusion, compared with dwarf stars. Standard stellar models computed under different physical assumptions show that the inclusion of the atomic diffusion has an impact of 0.07dex in the determination of A(Li)0 (much smaller than the case of MS stars) and it is basically unaffected by reasonable variations of other parameters (overshooting, age, initial Y, mixing length). We have determined the surface Li content of 17 Halo lower RGB stars,in the metallicity range [Fe/H]=-3.4 /-1.4 dex. The initial Li has then been inferred by accounting for the difference between initial and post-dredge up A(Li) in the appropriate stellar models. It depends mainly on the used T(eff) scale and is only weakly sensitive to the efficiency of atomic diffusion,so long as one neglects Li destruction caused by the process competing with atomic diffusion. Final A(Li)0 span a relatively narrow range (2.28 /2.46 dex), and is 0.3-0.4 dex lower the WMAP/BBNS predictions. These values of A(Li)0 are corroborated by the analysis of the GCs NGC6397, NGC6752 and M4. Our result provides an independent quantitative estimate of the difference with the Big Bang value and sets a very robust constraint for the physical processes invoked to resolve this discrepancy.

We present a new abundance analysis of the super Li-rich star J37 and a comparison star in NGC 6633. We confirm the result of Deliyannis et al. that J37 has a Li abundance well above the meteoritic value, and we also confirm that Al, S, Si, Ca, Fe an d Ni are super-solar, and C is sub-solar. We additionally find that Na, Sc, Ti are super-solar, while O is sub-solar. The abundance pattern of metals in J37 is generally consistent with the bulk composition of the Earth. We propose that accretion of circumstellar matter is the best explanation for these abundance anomalies, although we cannot rule out a secondary contribution from diffusion.
A Li-rich red giant star (2M19411367+4003382) recently discovered in the direction of NGC 6819 belongs to the rare subset of Li-rich stars that have not yet evolved to the luminosity bump, an evolutionary stage where models predict Li can be replenis hed. The currently favored model to explain Li enhancement in first-ascent red giants like 2M19411367+4003382 requires deep mixing into the stellar interior. Testing this model requires a measurement of 12C/13C, which is possible to obtain from APOGEE spectra. However, the Li-rich star also has abnormal asteroseismic properties that call into question its membership in the cluster, even though its radial velocity and location on color-magnitude diagrams are consistent with membership. To address these puzzles, we have measured a wide array of abundances in the Li-rich star and three comparison stars using spectra taken as part of the APOGEE survey to determine the degree of stellar mixing, address the question of membership, and measure the surface gravity. We confirm that the Li-rich star is a red giant with the same overall chemistry as the other cluster giants. However, its log g is significantly lower, consistent with the asteroseismology results and suggestive of a very low mass if the star is indeed a cluster member. Regardless of the cluster membership, the 12C/13C and C/N ratios of the Li-rich star are consistent with standard first dredge-up, indicating that Li dilution has already occurred, and inconsistent with internal Li enrichment scenarios that require deep mixing.
Elemental correlations and anti-correlations are known to be present in globular clusters (GCs) owing to pollution by CNO cycled gas. Because of its fragility Li is destroyed at the temperature at which the CNO cycling occurs, and this makes Li a cru cial study for the nature of the contaminating stars. We observed 112 un-evolved stars at the Turnoff of the NGC6752 cluster with FLAMES at the VLT to investigate the presence and the extent of a Li-O correlation. This correlation is expected if there is a simple pollution scenario. Li (670.8 nm) and O triplet (771 nm) abundances are derived in NLTE. All stars belong to a very narrow region of the color-magnitude diagram, so they have similar stellar parameters (Teff, log g). We find that O and Li correlate, with a high statistical significance that confirms the early results for this cluster. At first glance this is what is expected if a simple pollution of pristine gas with CNO cycled gas (O-poor, Li-poor) occurred. The slope of the relationship, however, is about 0.4, and differs from unity by over 7 Sigma. A slope of one is the value predicted for a pure contamination model. We confirm an extended Li-O correlation in non evolved stars of NGC 6752. At the same time the characteristic of the correlation shows that a simple pollution scenario is not sufficient to explain the observations. Within this scenario the contaminant gas must have been enriched in Li. This would rule out massive stars as main polluters, and favor the hypothesis that the polluting gas was enriched by intermediate or high-mass AGB stars, unless the former can be shown to be able to produce Li. According to our observations, the fraction of polluting gas contained in the stars observed is a considerable fraction of the stellar mass of the cluster.

We performed a detailed study of the evolution of the luminosity of He-ignition stage and of the red giant branch bump luminosity during the red giant branch phase transition for various metallicities. To this purpose we calculated a grid of stellar models that sample the mass range of the transition with a fine mass step equal to ${rm 0.01M_odot}$. We find that for a stellar population with a given initial chemical composition, there is a critical age (of 1.1-1.2~Gyr) around which a decrease in age of just 20-30 million years causes a drastic drop in the red giant branch tip brightness. We also find a narrow age range (a few $10^7$ yr) around the transition, characterized by the luminosity of the red giant branch bump being brighter than the luminosity of He ignition. We discuss a possible link between this occurrence and observations of Li-rich core He-burning stars.
