We advocate a simple multipole expansion of the polarisation density matrix. The resulting multipoles appear as successive moments of the Stokes variables and can be obtained from feasible measurements. In terms of these multipoles, we construct a whole hierarchy of measures that accurately assess higher-order polarization fluctuations.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is an intermediate quantum correlation that lies in between entanglement and Bell non-locality. Its temporal analogue, temporal steering, has recently been shown to have applications in quantum information and o pen quantum systems. Here, we show that there exists a hierarchy among the three temporal quantum correlations: temporal inseparability, temporal steering, and macrorealism. Given that the temporal inseparability can be used to define a measure of quantum causality, similarly the quantification of temporal steering can be viewed as a weaker measure of direct cause and can be used to distinguish between direct cause and common cause in a quantum network.
We investigate the dynamics of quantum correlations (QC) under the effects of reservoir memory, as a resource for quantum information and computation tasks. Quantum correlations of two-qubit systems are used for implementing quantum teleportation suc cessfully, and for investigating how teleportation fidelity, violation of Bell-CHSH inequality, quantum steering and entanglement are connected with each other under the influence of noisy environments. Both Markovian and non-Markovian channels are considered, and it is shown that the decay and revival of correlations follow the hierarchy of quantum correlations in the state space. Noise tolerance of quantum correlations are checked for different types of unital and non-unital quantum channels, with and without memory. The quantum speed limit time $(tau_{QSL})$ is investigated from the perspective of memory of quantum noise, and the corresponding dynamics is used to analyze the evolution of quantum correlations. We establish the connection between information backflow, quantum speed limit time and dynamics of quantum correlations for non-Markovian quantum channels.
We report on a novel and efficient source of polarization squeezing using a single pass through an optical fiber. Simply passing this Kerr squeezed beam through a carefully aligned lambda/2 waveplate and splitting it on a polarization beam splitter, we find polarization squeezing of up to 5.1 +/- 0.3 dB. The experimental setup allows for the direct measurement of the squeezing angle.
We use a novel form of quantum conditional probability to define new measures of quantum information in a dynamical context. We explore relationships between our new quantities and standard measures of quantum information such as von Neumann entropy. These quantities allow us to find new proofs of some standard results in quantum information theory, such as the concavity of von Neumann entropy and Holevos theorem. The existence of an underlying probability distribution helps to shed some light on the conceptual underpinnings of these results.
A quantum ensemble ${(p_x, rho_x)}$ is a set of quantum states each occurring randomly with a given probability. Quantum ensembles are necessary to describe situations with incomplete a priori information, such as the output of a stochastic quantum c hannel (generalized measurement), and play a central role in quantum communication. In this paper, we propose measures of distance and fidelity between two quantum ensembles. We consider two approaches: the first one is based on the ability to mimic one ensemble given the other one as a resource and is closely related to the Monge-Kantorovich optimal transportation problem, while the second one uses the idea of extended-Hilbert-space (EHS) representations which introduce auxiliary pointer (or flag) states. Both types of measures enjoy a number of desirable properties. The Kantorovich measures, albeit monotonic under deterministic quantum operations, are not monotonic under generalized measurements. In contrast, the EHS measures are. We present operational interpretations for both types of measures. We also show that the EHS fidelity between ensembles provides a novel interpretation of the fidelity between mixed states--the latter is equal to the maximum of the fidelity between all pure-state ensembles whose averages are equal to the mixed states being compared. We finally use the new measures to define distance and fidelity for stochastic quantum channels and positive operator-valued measures (POVMs). These quantities may be useful in the context of tomography of stochastic quantum channels and quantum detectors.
