We study the flow forced by precession in rigid non-axisymmetric ellipsoidal containers. To do so, we revisit the inviscid and viscous analytical models that have been previously developed for the spheroidal geometry by, respectively, Poincare (Bull. Astronomique, vol. XXVIII, 1910, pp. 1-36) and Busse (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 33, 1968, pp. 739-751), and we report the first numerical simulations of flows in such a geometry. In strong contrast with axisymmetric spheroids, where the forced flow is systematically stationary in the precessing frame, we show that the forced flow is unsteady and periodic. Comparisons of the numerical simulations with the proposed theoretical model show excellent agreement for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric containers. Finally, since the studied configuration corresponds to a tidally locked celestial body such as the Earths Moon, we use our model to investigate the challenging but planetary-relevant limit of very small Ekman numbers and the particular case of our Moon.

The ability to create dynamic deformations of micron-sized structures is relevant to a wide variety of applications such as adaptable optics, soft robotics, and reconfigurable microfluidic devices. In this work we examine non-uniform lubrication flow as a mechanism to create complex deformation fields in an elastic plate. We consider a Kirchoff-Love elasticity model for the plate and Hele-Shaw flow in a narrow gap between the plate and a parallel rigid surface. Based on linearization of the Reynolds equation, we obtain a governing equation which relates elastic deformations to gradients in non-homogenous physical properties of the fluid (e.g. body forces, viscosity, and slip velocity). We then focus on a specific case of non-uniform Helmholtz-Smoluchowski electroosmotic slip velocity, and provide a method for determining the zeta-potential distribution necessary to generate arbitrary static and quasi-static deformations of the elastic plate. Extending the problem to time-dependent solutions, we analyze transient effects on asymptotically static solutions, and finally provide a closed form solution for a Greens function for time periodic actuations.
We reveal and investigate a new type of linear axisymmetric helical magnetorotational instability which is capable of destabilizing viscous and resistive rotational flows with radially increasing angular velocity, or positive shear. This instability is double-diffusive by nature and is different from the more familiar helical magnetorotational instability, operating at positive shear above the Liu limit, in that it works instead for a wide range of the positive shear when ${rm (i)}$ a combination of axial/poloidal and azimuthal/toroidal magnetic fields is applied and ${rm (ii)}$ the magnetic Prandtl number is not too close to unity. We study this instability first with radially local WKB analysis and then confirm its existence using a global stability analysis of the magnetized flow between two rotating cylinders with conducting or insulating boundaries. From an experimental point of view, we also demonstrate the presence of the new instability in a magnetized viscous and resistive Taylor-Couette flow with positive shear for such values of the flow parameters, which can be realized in upcoming experiments at the DRESDYN facility. Finally, this instability might have implications for the dynamics of the equatorial parts of the solar tachocline and dynamo action there, since the above two necessary conditions for the instability to take place are satisfied in this region. Our global stability calculations for the tachocline-like configuration, representing a thin rotating cylindrical layer with the appropriate boundary conditions -- conducting inner and insulating outer cylinders -- and the values of the flow parameters, indicate that it can indeed arise in this case with a characteristic growth time comparable to the solar cycle period.
To date, the influence of non-linear stratifications and two layer stratifications on internal wave propagation has been studied for two-dimensional wave fields in a cartesian geometry. Here, we use a novel wave generator configuration to investigate transmission in non-linear stratifications of axisymmetric internal wave. Two configurations are studied, both theoretically and experimentally. In the case of a free incident wave, a transmission maximum is found in the vicinity of evanescent frequencies. In the case of a confined incident wave, resonant effects lead to enhanced transmission rates from an upper layer to layer below. We consider the oceanographic relevance of these results by applying them to an example oceanic stratification, finding that there can be real-world implications.

Effects of spinning motion on the bouncing and coalescence between a spinning droplet and a non-spinning droplet undergoing the head-on collision were numerically studied by using a Volume-of-Fluid method. A prominent discovery is that the spinning d roplet can induce significant non-axisymmetric flow features for the head-on collision of equal-size droplets composed of the same liquid. Specifically, a non-axisymmetric bouncing was observed, and it is caused by the conversion of the spinning angular momentum into the orbital angular momentum. This process is accompanied by the rotational kinetic energy loss due to the interaction between the rotational and radial flows of the droplets. A non-axisymmetric internal flow and a delayed separation after temporary coalescence were also observed, and they are caused by the enhanced interface oscillation and internal-flow-induced viscous dissipation. The spinning motion can also promote the mass interminglement of droplets because the locally non-uniform mass exchange occurs at the early collision stage by non-axisymmetric flow and is further stretched along the filament at later collision stages. In addition, it is found that the non-axisymmetric flow features increase with increasing the orthogonality of the initial translational motion and the spinning motion of droplets.
We investigate the internal flow pattern of an evaporating droplet using tomographic particle image velocimetry (PIV) when the contact line non-uniformly recedes. We observe a three-dimensional azimuthal vortex pair while the contact line non-uniform ly recedes and the symmetry-breaking flow field is maintained during the evaporation. Based on the experimental results, we show that the vorticity magnitude of the internal flow is related to the relative contact line motion. Furthermore, to explain how the azimuthal vortex pair flow is created, we develop a theoretical model by taking into account the relation between the contact line motion and evaporating flux. Finally, we show that the theoretical model has a good agreement with experimental results.
