We present a rigorous theoretical analysis of the ALICE measurement of low-p_T direct-photon production in central lead-lead collisions at the LHC with a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76 TeV. Using NLO QCD, we compute the relative contributions to prompt-photon production from different initial and final states and the theoretical uncertainties coming from independent variations of the renormalisation and factorisation scales, the nuclear parton densities and the fragmentation functions. Based on different fits to the unsubtracted and prompt-photon subtracted ALICE data, we consistently find T = 304 pm 58 MeV and 309 pm 64 MeV for the effective temperature of the quark-gluon plasma (or hot medium) at p_T in [0.8;2.2] GeV and p_T in [1.5;3.5] GeV as well as a power-law (p_T^{-4}) behavior for p_T > 4 GeV as predicted by QCD hard scattering.

The low-x gluon density in the proton and, in particular, in nuclei is only very poorly constrained, while a better understanding of the low-x structure is crucial for measurements at the LHC and also for the planning of experiments at future hadron colliders. In addition, deviations from linear QCD evolution are expected to appear at low x, potentially leading to gluon saturation and a universal state of hadronic matter, the color-glass condensate. However, these effects have not been unambiguously proven to date. Fortunately, data from the LHC can be used directly to provide better constraints of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). In this context, a Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) is proposed as an addition to the ALICE experiment, to be installed in the Long Shutdown 3. The main goal of the FoCal proposal is to measure forward direct photons in pp and p-Pb collisions to obtain experimental constraints on proton and nuclear PDFs in a new region of low x. Based on the current knowledge from DIS experiments and first results from LHC, we will discuss the physics case for this proposed detector. While open charm measurements do provide important constraints, a photon measurement would provide additional unique information. The direct photon measurement requires a new electromagnetic calorimeter with extremely high granularity. The corresponding innovative design principle of a high-resolution Si-W sandwich calorimeter is discussed.

The dilepton production is investigated in proton-nucleus collisions in the forward region using the Color Glass Condensate approach. The transverse momentum distribution ($p_T$), more precisely the low $p_T$ region, where the saturation effects are expected to increase, is analyzed. The ratio between proton-nucleus and proton-proton differential cross section for RHIC and LHC energies is evaluated, showing the effects of saturation at small $p_T$, and presenting a Cronin type peak at moderate $p_T$. These features indicate the dilepton as a most suitable probe to study the properties of the saturated regime and the Cronin effect.
In this work we analyze the reliability of several techniques for computing jet and hadron spectra at different collision energies. This is of particular relevance for discovering energy loss in the upcoming oxygen-oxygen (OO) run at the LHC, for whi ch a reference $pp$ run at the same energy is currently not planned. For hadrons and jets we compute the ratio of spectra between different $pp$ collision energies in perturbative QCD, which can be used to construct a $pp$ reference spectrum. Alternatively, a $pp$ reference can be interpolated from measured spectra at nearby energies. We estimate the precision and accuracy of both strategies for the spectra ratio relevant to the oxygen run, and conclude that the central values agree to 4% accuracy for hadrons and 2% accuracy for jets. As an alternative, we propose taking the ratio of OO and $pp$ spectra at different collision energies, which cleanly separates the experimental measurement from the theoretical computation.

We consider a generic dark photon that arises from a hidden $U(1)$ gauge symmetry imposed on right-handed neutrinos ($ u_{R}$). Such a $ u_{R}$-philic dark photon is naturally dark due to the absence of tree-level couplings to normal matter. However, loop-induced couplings to charged leptons and quarks are inevitable, provided that $ u_{R}$ mix with left-handed neutrinos via Dirac mass terms. We investigate the loop-induced couplings and find that the $ u_{R}$-philic dark photon is not inaccessibly dark, which could be of potential importance to future dark photon searches at SHiP, FASER, Belle-II, LHC 14 TeV, etc.
We investigate the measurement of Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) photon correlations as an experimental tool to discriminate different sources of photon enhancement, which are proposed to simultaneously reproduce the direct photon yield and the azimuthal anisotropy measured in nuclear collisions at RHIC and the LHC. To showcase this, we consider two different scenarios in which we enhance the yields from standard hydrodynamical simulations. In the first, additional photons are produced from the early pre-equilibrium stage computed from the textit{bottom-up} thermalization scenario. In the second, the thermal rates are enhanced close to the pseudo-critical temperature $T_capprox 155,text{MeV}$ using a phenomenological ansatz. We compute the correlators for relative momenta $q_o, ,q_s$ and $q_l$ for different transverse pair momenta, $K_perp$, and find that the longitudinal correlation is the most sensitive to different photon sources. Our results also demonstrate that including anisotropic pre-equilibrium rates enhances non-Gaussianities in the correlators, which can be quantified using the kurtosis of the correlators. Finally, we study the feasibility of measuring a direct photon HBT signal in the upcoming high-luminosity LHC runs. Considering only statistical uncertainties, we find that with the projected $sim 10^{10}$ heavy ion events a measurement of the HBT correlations for $K_perp<1, text{GeV}$ is statistically significant.
