We present the vacuum polarisation of a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on the brane for a Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole in a bulk of zero to seven additional dimensions.
We study a false vacuum decay in a two-dimensional black hole spacetime background. The decay rate in the case that nucleation site locates at a black hole center has been calculated in the literature. We develop a method for calculating the decay ra
te of the false vacuum for a generic nucleation site. We find that the decay rate becomes larger when the nucleation site is close to the black hole horizon and coincides with that in Minkowski spacetime when the nucleation site goes to infinity.
We compute the renormalized expectation value of the square of a massless, conformally coupled, quantum scalar field on the brane of a higher-dimensional black hole. Working in the AADD brane-world scenario, the extra dimensions are flat and we assum
e that the compactification radius is large compared with the size of the black hole. The four-dimensional on-brane metric corresponds to a slice through a higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole geometry and depends on the number of bulk space-time dimensions. The quantum scalar field is in a thermal state at the Hawking temperature. An exact, closed-form expression is derived for the renormalized expectation value of the square of the quantum scalar field on the event horizon of the black hole. Outside the event horizon, this renormalized expectation value is computed numerically. The answer depends on the number of bulk space-time dimensions, with a magnitude which increases rapidly as the number of bulk space-time dimensions increases.
We study the foliation of a $D$-dimensional spherically symmetric black-hole spacetime with $Dge 5$ by two kinds of one-parameter family of maximal hypersurfaces: a reflection-symmetric foliation with respect to the wormhole slot and a stationary fol
iation that has an infinitely long trumpet-like shape. As in the four-dimensional case, the foliations by the maximal hypersurfaces have the singularity avoidance nature irrespective of dimensionality. This indicates that the maximal slicing condition will be useful for simulating higher-dimensional black-hole spacetimes in numerical relativity. For the case of D=5, we present analytic solutions of the intrinsic metric, the extrinsic curvature, the lapse function, and the shift vector for the foliation by the stationary maximal hypersurfaces. This data will be useful for checking five-dimensional numerical relativity codes based on the moving puncture approach.
We study the absorption probability and Hawking radiation spectra of a phantom scalar field in the Kerr black hole spacetime. We find that the presence of the negative kinetic energy terms modifies the standard results in the greybody factor, super-r
adiance and Hawking radiation. Comparing with the usual scalar particle, the phantom scalar emission is enhanced in the black hole spacetime.
The Event Horizon Telescope recently produced the first images of a black hole. These images were synthesized by measuring the coherent correlation function of the complex electric field measured at telescopes located across the Earth. This correlati
on function corresponds to the Fourier transform of the image under the assumption that the source emits spatially incoherent radiation. However, black holes differ from standard astrophysical objects: in the absence of absorption and scattering, an observer sees a series of increasingly demagnified echos of each emitting location. These echos correspond to rays that orbit the black hole one or more times before reaching the observer. This multi-path propagation introduces spatial and temporal correlations into the electric field that encode properties of the black hole, irrespective of intrinsic variability. We explore the coherent temporal autocorrelation function measured at a single telescope. Specifically, we study the simplified toy problem of scalar field correlation functions $langle Psi(t) Psi(0) rangle$ sourced by fluctuating matter located near a Schwarzschild black hole. We find that the correlation function is peaked at times equal to integer multiples of the photon orbit period; the corresponding power spectral density vanishes like $lambda/r_{rm g}$ where $r_{rm g} = G M / c^{2}$ is the gravitational radius of the black hole and $lambda$ is the wavelength of radiation observed. For supermassive black holes observed at millimeter wavelengths, the power in echos is suppressed relative to direct emission by $sim 10^{-13} lambda_{rm mm}/M_{6}$, where $lambda_{rm mm} = lambda/(1,{rm mm})$ and $M_6 = M/(10^6 M_odot)$. Consequently, detecting multi-path propagation near a black hole using the coherent electric field autocorrelation is infeasible with current technology.
