We present a rigorous and efficient approach to the calculation of classical lattice-dynamical quantities from simulations that do not require an explicit solution of the time evolution. We focus on the temperature-dependent vibrational spectrum. We start from the moment expansion of the relevant time-correlation function for a many-body system, and show that it can be conveniently rewritten by using a basis in which the low-order moments are diagonal. This allows us to compute the main spectral features (e.g., position and width of the phonon peaks) from thermal averages available from any statistical simulation. We successfully apply our method to a model system that presents a structural transition and strongly temperature-dependent phonons. Our theory clarifies the status of previous heuristic schemes to estimate phonon frequencies.

High quality single crystals of Bi2Se3 were grown using a modified Bridgman technique, the detailed study were carried out using Raman spectroscopy and characterized by Laue diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Polarized Raman scattering measurements were also carried out, and both the A1g and A2g phonon modes showed strong polarization effect, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction. The temperature dependent study (in the temperature range 83 K to 523 K of Raman active modes were reported and observed to follow a systematic red shift. The frequency of these phonon modes are found to vary linearly with temperature and can be explained by first order temperature co-efficient. The temperature co-efficient for A11g, E2g and A21g modes were estimated to be -1.44*10-2, -1.94*10-2 and -1.95*10-2cm-1/K respectively.
We present a vibrational dynamical mean-field theory (VDMFT) of the dynamics of atoms in solids with anharmonic interactions. Like other flavors of DMFT, VDMFT maps the dynamics of a periodic anharmonic lattice of atoms onto those of a self-consisten tly defined impurity problem with local anharmonicity and coupling to a bath of harmonic oscillators. VDMFT is exact in the harmonic and molecular limits, nonperturbative, systematically improvable through its clusters extensions, and usable with classical or quantum impurity solvers, depending on the importance of nuclear quantum effects. When tested on models of anharmonic optical and acoustic phonons, we find that classical VDMFT gives good agreement with classical molecular dynamics, including the temperature dependence of phonon frequencies and lifetimes. Using a quantum impurity solver, signatures of nuclear quantum effects are observed at low temperatures.
We describe a coupled cluster framework for coupled systems of electrons and phonons. Neutral and charged excitations are accessed via the equation-of-motion version of the theory. Benchmarks on the Hubbard-Holstein model allow us to assess the stren gths and weaknesses of different coupled cluster approximations which generally perform well for weak to moderate coupling. Finally, we report progress towards an implementation for {it ab initio} calculations on solids, and present some preliminary results on finite-size models of diamond. We also report the implementation of electron-phonon coupling matrix elements from crystalline Gaussian type orbitals (cGTO) within the PySCF program package.
Time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) is a computationally efficient first-principles approach for calculating optical spectra in insulators and semiconductors, including excitonic effects. We show how exciton wave functions can be obtaine d from TDDFT via the Kohn-Sham transition density matrix, both in the frequency-dependent linear-response regime and in real-time propagation. The method is illustrated using one-dimensional model solids. In particular, we show that our approach provides insight into the formation and dissociation of excitons in real time. This opens the door to time-resolved studies of exciton dynamics in materials by means of real-time TDDFT.
We present accurate optical spectra of semiconductors and insulators within a pure Kohn-Sham time-dependent density-functional approach. In particular, we show that the onset of the absorption is well reproduced when comparing to experiment. No empir ical information nor a theory beyond Kohn-Sham density-functional theory, such as $GW$, is invoked to correct the Kohn-Sham gap. Our approach relies on the link between the exchange-correlation kernel of time-dependent density functional theory and the derivative discontinuity of ground-state density-functional theory. We show explicitly how to relate these two quantities. We illustrate the accuracy and simplicity of our approach by applying it to various semiconductors (Si, GaP, GaAs) and wide-gap insulators (C, LiF, Ar).
