We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a coherently split one-dimensional (1d) Bose gas by measuring the full probability distribution functions of matter-wave interference. Observing the system on different length scales allows us to probe the dynamics of excitations on different energy scales, revealing two distinct length-scale dependent regimes of relaxation. We measure the crossover length-scale separating these two regimes and identify it with the prethermalized phase-correlation length of the system. Our approach enables a direct observation of the multimode dynamics characterizing one-dimensional quantum systems.

We study the dynamics of a one-dimensional system composed of a bosonic background and one impurity in single- and double-well trapping geometries. In the limit of strong interactions, this system can be modeled by a spin chain where the exchange coe fficients are determined by the geometry of the trap. We observe non-trivial dynamics when the repulsion between the impurity and the background is dominant. In this regime, the system exhibits oscillations that resemble the dynamics of a Josephson junction. Furthermore, the double-well geometry allows for an enhancement in the tunneling as compared to the single-well case.
We study the dynamical properties of a few bosons confined in an one-dimensional split hard wall trap with the interaction strength varying from the weakly to strongly repulsive regime. The system is initially prepared in one side of the double well by setting the barrier strength of the split trap to be infinity and then the barrier strength is suddenly changed to a finite value. Both exact diagonalization method and Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) approximation are used to study the dynamical evolution of the initial system. The exact results based on exact diagonaliztion verify the enhancement of correlated tunneling in the strongly interacting regime. Comparing results obtained by two different methods, we conclude that one-band BHM approximation can well describe the dynamics in the weakly interacting regime, but is not efficient to give quantitatively consistent results in the strongly interacting regime. Despite of the quantitative discrepancy, we validate that the form of correlated tunneling gives an important contribution to tunneling in the large interaction regime. To get a quantitative description for the dynamics of bosons in the strongly interacting regime, we find that a multi-band BHM approximation is necessary.
We experimentally study the dynamics of a degenerate one-dimensional Bose gas that is subject to a continuous outcoupling of atoms. Although standard evaporative cooling is rendered ineffective by the absence of thermalizing collisions in this system , we observe substantial cooling. This cooling proceeds through homogeneous particle dissipation and many-body dephasing, enabling the preparation of otherwise unexpectedly low temperatures. Our observations establish a scaling relation between temperature and particle number, and provide insights into equilibration in the quantum world.
The structure and dynamics of one-dimensional binary Bose gases forming quantum droplets is studied by solving the corresponding amended Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Two physically different regimes are identified, corresponding to small droplets of an approximately Gaussian shape and large `puddles with a broad flat-top plateau. Small droplets collide quasi-elastically, featuring the soliton-like behavior. On the other hand, large colliding droplets may merge or suffer fragmentation, depending on their relative velocity. The frequency of a breathing excited state of droplets, as predicted by the dynamical variational approximation based on the Gaussian ansatz, is found to be in good agreement with numerical results. Finally, the stability diagram for a single droplet with respect to shape excitations with a given wave number is drawn, being consistent with preservation of the Weber number for large droplets.
Motivated by recent experimental observations (C.V. Parker {it et al.}, Nature Physics, {bf 9}, 769 (2013)), we analyze the stability of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional lattice subjected to periodic shaking. In such a system the re is no thermodynamic ground state, but there may be a long-lived steady-state, described as an eigenstate of a Floquet Hamiltonian. We calculate how scattering processes lead to a decay of the Floquet state. We map out the phase diagram of the system and find regions where the BEC is stable and regions where the BEC is unstable against atomic collisions. We show that Parker et al. perform their experiment in the stable region, which accounts for the long life-time of the condensate ($sim$ 1 second). We also estimate the scattering rate of the bosons in the region where the BEC is unstable.
