Mechanism of unconventional superconductivity is still unknown even if more than 25 years have been passed since the discovery of high-Tc cuprate superconductors by J.G. Bednorz and K. A. Muller. Here, we explore the cuprate phase diagram by electronic Raman spectroscopy and shed light on the superconducting state in hole doped cuprates. Namely, how superconductivity and the critical temperature Tc are impacted by the pseudogap.

The phase diagram of the cuprate superconductors continues to pose formidable scientific challenges. While these materials are typically viewed as doped Mott insulators, it is well known that they are Fermi liquids at high hole-dopant concentrations. It was recently demonstrated that at moderate doping, in the pseudogap region of the phase diagram, the charge carriers are also best described as Fermi liquid. Nevertheless, the relationship between the two Fermi-liquid regions and the nature of the strange-metal state at intermediate doping have remained unsolved. Here we show in the case of the model cuprate superconductor HgBa2CuO4+{delta} that the scattering rate measured by the cotangent of the Hall angle remains quadratic in temperature across the pseudogap temperature, upon entering the strange-metal state, and that it is doping-independent below optimal doping. Analysis of the published results for other cuprates reveals that this behavior is universal throughout the entire phase diagram and points to a pervasive Fermi-liquid transport scattering rate. We argue that these observations can be reconciled with other data upon considering the possibility that the pseudogap phenomenon signifies the completion of the gradual, non-uniform localization of one hole per planar CuO2 unit upon cooling.

We present the first comprehensive derivation of the intrinsic electronic phase diagram of the iron-oxypnictide superconductors in the normal state based on the analysis of the electrical resistivity $rho$ of both LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and SmFeAsO$_{1 -x}$F$_x$ for a wide range of doping. Our data give clear-cut evidence for unusual normal state properties in these new materials. In particular, the emergence of superconductivity at low doping levels is accompanied by distinct anomalous transport behavior in $rho$ of the normal state which is reminiscent of the spin density wave (SDW) signature in the parent material. At higher doping levels $rho$ of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ shows a clear transition from this pseudogap-like behavior to Fermi liquid-like behavior, mimicking the phase diagram of the cuprates. Moreover, our data reveal a correlation between the strength of the anomalous features and the stability of the superconducting phase. The pseudogap-like features become stronger in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ where superconductivity is enhanced and vanish when superconductivity is reduced in the doping region with Fermi liquid-like behavior.
We formulate a theory for the polarization-dependence of the electronic (pair-breaking) Raman response for the recently discovered non-centrosymmetric superconductors in the clean limit at zero temperature. Possible applications include the systems C ePt$_3$Si and Li$_2$Pd$_x$Pt$_{3-x}$B which reflect the two important classes of the involved spin-orbit coupling. We provide analytical expressions for the Raman vertices for these two classes and calculate the polarization dependence of the electronic spectra. We predict a two-peak structure and different power laws with respect to the unknown relative magnitude of the singlet and triplet contributions to the superconducting order parameter, revealing a large variety of characteristic fingerprints of the underlying condensate.
By paying special attention to the fact that the doped holes induce deformation of CuO6 octahedrons (or CuO5 pyramids) in cuprate superconductors, we develop a non-rigid band theory treating doping-induced alterations of energy-band structures in cop per oxide superconductors. Thanks to this theory, we obtain a complete picture of the doping-induced alteration in the electronic structure of La2CuO4, from the spin-disordered insulating phase to the metallic phase. We conclude that the Fermi surface structure of this cuprate in the underdoped region consists of Fermi pockets in the antinodal region and Fermi arcs in the nodal region, and thus that the origin of a so-called pseudogap is closely related to the existence of Fermi pockets. Moreover, we show that the carriers on the Fermi pockets contribute to the phonon mechanism in d-wave superconductivity. Finally, we discuss how one will be able to find higher Tc materials, based on the conclusions mentioned above.
Universal scaling laws can guide the understanding of new phenomena, and for cuprate high-temperature superconductivity such an early influential relation showed that the critical temperature of superconductivity ($T_c$) correlates with the density o f the superfluid measured at low temperatures. This famous Uemura relation has been inspiring the community ever since. Here we show that the charge content of the bonding orbitals of copper and oxygen in the ubiquitous CuO$_2$ plane, accessible with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), is tied to the Uemura scaling. This charge distribution between copper and oxygen varies between cuprate families and with doping, and it allows us to draw a new phase diagram that has different families sorted with respect to their maximum $T_c$. Moreover, it also shows that $T_c$ could be raised substantially if we were able to synthesize materials in which more oxygen charge is transferred to the approximately half filled copper orbital.
