In this work we prove a weak Noether type theorem for a class of variational problems which include broken extremals. We then use this result to prove discrete Noether type conservation laws for certain classes of finite element discretisation of a model elliptic problem. In addition we study how well the finite element scheme satisfies the continuous conservation laws arising from the application of Noethers 1st Theorem (E. Noether 1918). We summarise extensive numerical tests, illustrating the conservativity of the discrete Noether law using the $p$--Laplacian as an example.

Stokes variational inequalities arise in the formulation of glaciological problems involving contact. Two important examples of such problems are that of the grounding line of a marine ice sheet and the evolution of a subglacial cavity. In general, r igid modes are present in the velocity space, rendering the variational inequality semicoercive. In this work, we consider a mixed formulation of this variational inequality involving a Lagrange multiplier and provide an analysis of its finite element approximation. Error estimates in the presence of rigid modes are obtained by means of a novel technique involving metric projections onto closed convex cones. Numerical results are reported to validate the error estimates and demonstrate the advantages of using a mixed formulation in a glaciological application.
We study the regularity of the solution to an obstacle problem for a class of integro-differential operators. The differential part is a second order elliptic operator, whereas the nonlocal part is given by the integral fractional Laplacian. The obta ined smoothness is then used to design and analyze a finite element scheme.
Fourth-order differential equations play an important role in many applications in science and engineering. In this paper, we present a three-field mixed finite-element formulation for fourth-order problems, with a focus on the effective treatment of the different boundary conditions that arise naturally in a variational formulation. Our formulation is based on introducing the gradient of the solution as an explicit variable, constrained using a Lagrange multiplier. The essential boundary conditions are enforced weakly, using Nitsches method where required. As a result, the problem is rewritten as a saddle-point system, requiring analysis of the resulting finite-element discretization and the construction of optimal linear solvers. Here, we discuss the analysis of the well-posedness and accuracy of the finite-element formulation. Moreover, we develop monolithic multigrid solvers for the resulting linear systems. Two and three-dimensional numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the discretization and efficiency of the multigrid solvers proposed.
We extend our analysis on the Oldroyd-B model in Barrett and Boyaval [1] to consider the finite element approximation of the FENE-P system of equations, which models a dilute polymeric fluid, in a bounded domain $D $subset$ R d , d = 2 or 3$, subject to no flow boundary conditions. Our schemes are based on approximating the pressure and the symmetric conforma-tion tensor by either (a) piecewise constants or (b) continuous piecewise linears. In case (a) the velocity field is approximated by continuous piecewise quadratics ($d = 2$) or a reduced version, where the tangential component on each simplicial edge ($d = 2$) or face ($d = 3$) is linear. In case (b) the velocity field is approximated by continuous piecewise quadratics or the mini-element. We show that both of these types of schemes, based on the backward Euler type time discretiza-tion, satisfy a free energy bound, which involves the logarithm of both the conformation tensor and a linear function of its trace, without any constraint on the time step. Furthermore, for our approximation (b) in the presence of an additional dissipative term in the stress equation, the so-called FENE-P model with stress diffusion, we show (subsequence) convergence in the case $d = 2$, as the spatial and temporal discretization parameters tend to zero, towards global-in-time weak solutions of this FENE-P system. Hence, we prove existence of global-in-time weak solutions to the FENE-P model with stress diffusion in two spatial dimensions.
The aim of this paper is the numerical study of a class of nonlinear nonlocal degenerate parabolic equations. The convergence and error bounds of the solutions are proved for a linearized Crank-Nicolson-Galerkin finite element method with polynomial approximations of degree $kgeq 1$. Some explicit solutions are obtained and used to test the implementation of the method in Matlab environment.
