We present an electrochemical route for the integration of graphene with light sensitive copper-based alloys used in optoelectronic applications. Graphene grown using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) transferred to glass is found to be a robust substrate on which photoconductive Cu_{x}S films of 1-2 um thickness can be deposited. The effect of growth parameters on the morphology and photoconductivity of Cu_{x}S films is presented. Current-voltage characterization and photoconductivity decay experiments are performed with graphene as one contact and silver epoxy as the other.

The electrical properties of graphene are known to be modified by chemical species that interact with it. We investigate the effect of doping of graphene-based devices by toluene (C6H5CH3). We show that this effect has a complicated character. Toluen e is seen to act as a donor, transferring electrons to the graphene. However, the degree of doping is seen to depend on the magnitude and polarity of an electric field applied between the graphene and a nearby electrode. This can be understood in terms of an electrochemical reaction mediated by the graphene crystal.
Copper ferrite thin films were rf sputtered at a power of 50W. The as deposited films were annealed in air at 800{deg}C and slow cooled. The transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies were carried out on as deposited as well as on slow cooled fil m. Significantly larger defect concentration, including stacking faults, was observed in 50W as deposited films than the films deposited at a higher rf power of 200W. The film annealed at 800{deg}C and then slow cooled showed an unusual grain growth upto 180nm for a film thickness of ~240nm. These grains showed Kikuchi pattern.
The origins of indirect spin exchange in crystalline thin films of Copper Octabutoxy Phthalocyanine (Cu-OBPc) are investigated using Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. These studies are made possible by a solution deposition technique wh ich produces highly ordered films with macroscopic grain sizes suitable for optical studies. For temperatures lower than 2 K, the contribution of a specific state in the valence band manifold originating from the hybridized lone pair in nitrogen orbitals of the Phthalocyanine ring, bears the Brillouin-like signature of an exchange interaction with the localized $textit{d}$-shell Cu spins. A comprehensive MCD spectral analysis coupled with a molecular field model of a $sigmapi-d$ exchange analogous to $textit{sp-d}$ interactions in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors (DMS) renders an enhanced Zeeman splitting and a modified $textit{g}$-factor of -4 for the electrons that mediate the interaction. These studies define an experimental tool for identifying electronic states involved in spin-dependent exchange interactions in organic materials.
We report on multiple fundamental qualitative improvements in the growth of improper ferroelectric hexagonal YMnO$_3$ (YMO) thin films and heterostructures by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). By a combination of pre-growth substrate annealing and low-e nergy-fluence PLD, we obtain a two-dimensional growth mode of the YMO films on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with ultralow roughness and devoid of misoriented nanocrystalline inclusions. By inserting a sacrificial manganite layer capped with conducting indium-tin oxide between the substrate and the final film, the latter is grown in a fully lattice-relaxed mode and, thus, without any misfit dislocations while maintaining the extraordinary flatness of the films grown directly on pre-annealed YSZ. This provides a template for the fabrication of heterostructures based on hexagonal manganites as promising class of multiferroics with improper room-temperature ferroelectricity and the implementation of these into technologically relevant epitaxial metal|ferroelectric-type multilayers.
Phenylenediamine (PDA) was chosen as a coordinating, reducing, and capping agent to effectively direct growth and protect against oxidation of Cu nanowires (Cu NWs) in an aqueous solution. PDA was found to reduce Cu (II) to Cu (I) at room temperature , and stabilize the resulting Cu (I) by forming a coordination complex. The presence of a stable Cu (I) complex is the key step in the synthesis of Cu NWs under mild conditions. Different PDA isomers lead to different growth paths of forming Cu NWs. Both pPDA and mPDA-synthesized Cu NWs were covered with a thin layer of polyphenylenediamine and show excellent anti-oxidation properties, even in the presence of water. The usefulness of the present and electrochemical active Cu NWs for a variety of nanotechnology applications is discussed.
