We present a theoretical analysis of the selective darkening method for implementing quantum controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates. This method, which we recently proposed and demonstrated, consists of driving two transversely-coupled quantum bits (qubits) with a driving field that is resonant with one of the two qubits. For specific relative amplitudes and phases of the driving field felt by the two qubits, one of the two transitions in the degenerate pair is darkened, or in other words, becomes forbidden by effective selection rules. At these driving conditions, the evolution of the two-qubit state realizes a CNOT gate. The gate speed is found to be limited only by the coupling energy J, which is the fundamental speed limit for any entangling gate. Numerical simulations show that at gate speeds corresponding to 0.48J and 0.07J, the gate fidelity is 99% and 99.99%, respectively, and increases further for lower gate speeds. In addition, the effect of higher-lying energy levels and weak anharmonicity is studied, as well as the scalability of the method to systems of multiple qubits. We conclude that in all these respects this method is competitive with existing schemes for creating entanglement, with the added advantages of being applicable for qubits operating at fixed frequencies (either by design or for exploitation of coherence sweet-spots) and having the simplicity of microwave-only operation.

We generalize quantum circuits for the Toffoli gate presented by Selinger and Jones for functionally controlled NOT gates, i.e., $X$ gates controlled by arbitrary $n$-variable Boolean functions. Our constructions target the gate set consisting of Cli fford gates and single qubit rotations by arbitrary angles. Our constructions use the Walsh-Hadamard spectrum of Boolean functions and build on the work by Schuch and Siewert and Welch et al. We present quantum circuits for the case where the target qubit is in an arbitrary state as well as the special case where the target is in a known state. Additionally, we present constructions that require no auxiliary qubits and constructions that have a rotation depth of 1.
Controlled manipulation of quantum states is central to studying natural and artificial quantum systems. If a quantum system consists of interacting sub-units, the nature of the coupling may lead to quantum levels with degenerate energy differences. This degeneracy makes frequency-selective quantum operations impossible. For the prominent group of transversely coupled two-level systems, i.e. qubits, we introduce a method to selectively suppress one transition of a degenerate pair while coherently exciting the other, effectively creating artificial selection rules. It requires driving two qubits simultaneously with the same frequency and specified relative amplitude and phase. We demonstrate our method on a pair of superconducting flux qubits. It can directly be applied to the other superconducting qubits, and to any other qubit type that allows for individual driving. Our results provide a single-pulse controlled-NOT gate for the class of transversely coupled qubits.
A dynamics regime of Rydberg atoms, unselective ground-state blockade (UGSB), is proposed in the context of Rydberg antiblockade (RAB), where the evolution of two atoms is suppressed when they populate in an identical ground state. UGSB is used to im plement a SWAP gate in one step without individual addressing of atoms. Aiming at circumventing common issues in RAB-based gates including atomic decay, Doppler dephasing, and fluctuations in the interatomic coupling strength, we modify the RAB condition to achieve a dynamical SWAP gate whose robustness is much greater than that of the nonadiabatic holonomic one in the conventional RAB regime. In addition, on the basis of the proposed SWAP gates, we further investigate the implementation of a three-atom Fredkin gate by combining Rydberg blockade and RAB. The present work may facilitate to implement the RAB-based gates of strongly coupled atoms in experiment.
Developing quantum computers for real-world applications requires understanding theoretical sources of quantum advantage and applying those insights to design more powerful machines. Toward that end, we introduce a high-fidelity gate set inspired by a proposal for near-term quantum advantage in optimization problems. By orchestrating coherent, multi-level control over three transmon qutrits, we synthesize a family of deterministic, continuous-angle quantum phase gates acting in the natural three-qubit computational basis (CCPHASE$(theta)$). We estimate the process fidelity for this scheme via Cycle Benchmarking of $mathcal{F}=87.1pm0.8%$, higher than reference two-qubit gate decompositions. CCPHASE$(theta)$ is anticipated to have broad experimental implications, and we report a blueprint demonstration for solving a class of binary constraint satisfaction problems whose construction is consistent with a path to quantum advantage.
In multi-qubit system, correlated errors subject to unwanted interactions with other qubits is one of the major obstacles for scaling up quantum computers to be applicable. We present two approaches to correct such noise and demonstrate with high fid elity and robustness. We use spectator and intruder to discriminate the environment interacting with target qubit in different parameter regime. Our proposed approaches combines analytical theory and numerical optimization, and are general to obtain smooth control pulses for various qubit systems. Both theory and numerical simulations demonstrate to correct these errors efficiently. Gate fidelities are generally above $0.9999$ over a large range of parameter variation for a set of single-qubit gates and two-qubit entangling gates. Comparison with well-known control waveform demonstrates the great advantage of our solutions.
