Adaptive networks rely on in-network and collaborative processing among distributed agents to deliver enhanced performance in estimation and inference tasks. Information is exchanged among the nodes, usually over noisy links. The combination weights that are used by the nodes to fuse information from their neighbors play a critical role in influencing the adaptation and tracking abilities of the network. This paper first investigates the mean-square performance of general adaptive diffusion algorithms in the presence of various sources of imperfect information exchanges, quantization errors, and model non-stationarities. Among other results, the analysis reveals that link noise over the regression data modifies the dynamics of the network evolution in a distinct way, and leads to biased estimates in steady-state. The analysis also reveals how the network mean-square performance is dependent on the combination weights. We use these observations to show how the combination weights can be optimized and adapted. Simulation results illustrate the theoretical findings and match well with theory.

Social networks have become ubiquitous in our daily life, as such it has attracted great research interests recently. A key challenge is that it is of extremely large-scale with tremendous information flow, creating the phenomenon of Big Data. Under such a circumstance, understanding information diffusion over social networks has become an important research issue. Most of the existing works on information diffusion analysis are based on either network structure modeling or empirical approach with dataset mining. However, the information diffusion is also heavily influenced by network users decisions, actions and their socio-economic connections, which is generally ignored in existing works. In this paper, we propose an evolutionary game theoretic framework to model the dynamic information diffusion process in social networks. Specifically, we analyze the framework in uniform degree and non-uniform degree networks and derive the closed-form expressions of the evolutionary stable network states. Moreover, the information diffusion over two special networks, ErdH{o}s-Renyi random network and the Barabasi-Albert scale-free network, are also highlighted. To verify our theoretical analysis, we conduct experiments by using both synthetic networks and real-world Facebook network, as well as real-world information spreading dataset of Twitter and Memetracker. Experiments shows that the proposed game theoretic framework is effective and practical in modeling the social network users information forwarding behaviors.
Much effort has been devoted to understand how temporal network features and the choice of the source node affect the prevalence of a diffusion process. In this work, we addressed the further question: node pairs with what kind of local and temporal connection features tend to appear in a diffusion trajectory or path, thus contribute to the actual information diffusion. We consider the Susceptible-Infected spreading process with a given infection probability per contact on a large number of real-world temporal networks. We illustrate how to construct the information diffusion backbone where the weight of each link tells the probability that a node pair appears in a diffusion process starting from a random node. We unravel how these backbones corresponding to different infection probabilities relate to each other and point out the importance of two extreme backbones: the backbone with infection probability one and the integrated network, between which other backbones vary. We find that the temporal node pair feature that we proposed could better predict the links in the extreme backbone with infection probability one as well as the high weight links than the features derived from the integrated network. This universal finding across all the empirical networks highlights that temporal information are crucial in determining a node pairs role in a diffusion process. A node pair with many early contacts tends to appear in a diffusion process. Our findings shed lights on the in-depth understanding and may inspire the control of information spread.
The recommender system is one of the most promising ways to address the information overload problem in online systems. Based on the personal historical record, the recommender system can find interesting and relevant objects for the user within a hu ge information space. Many physical processes such as the mass diffusion and heat conduction have been applied to design the recommendation algorithms. The hybridization of these two algorithms has been shown to provide both accurate and diverse recommendation results. In this paper, we proposed two similarity preferential diffusion processes. Extensive experimental analyses on two benchmark data sets demonstrate that both recommendation and accuracy and diversity are improved duet to the similarity preference in the diffusion. The hybridization of the similarity preferential diffusion processes is shown to significantly outperform the state-of-art recommendation algorithm. Finally, our analysis on network sparsity show that there is significant difference between dense and sparse system, indicating that all the former conclusions on recommendation in the literature should be reexamined in sparse system.
The design of an efficient curing policy, able to stem an epidemic process at an affordable cost, has to account for the structure of the population contact network supporting the contagious process. Thus, we tackle the problem of allocating recovery resources among the population, at the lowest cost possible to prevent the epidemic from persisting indefinitely in the network. Specifically, we analyze a susceptible-infected-susceptible epidemic process spreading over a weighted graph, by means of a first-order mean-field approximation. First, we describe the influence of the contact network on the dynamics of the epidemics among a heterogeneous population, that is possibly divided into communities. For the case of a community network, our investigation relies on the graph-theoretical notion of equitable partition; we show that the epidemic threshold, a key measure of the network robustness against epidemic spreading, can be determined using a lower-dimensional dynamical system. Exploiting the computation of the epidemic threshold, we determine a cost-optimal curing policy by solving a convex minimization problem, which possesses a reduced dimension in the case of a community network. Lastly, we consider a two-level optimal curing problem, for which an algorithm is designed with a polynomial time complexity in the network size.
We provide an up-to-date view on the knowledge management system ScienceWISE (SW) and address issues related to the automatic assignment of articles to research topics. So far, SW has been proven to be an effective platform for managing large volumes of technical articles by means of ontological concept-based browsing. However, as the publication of research articles accelerates, the expressivity and the richness of the SW ontology turns into a double-edged sword: a more fine-grained characterization of articles is possible, but at the cost of introducing more spurious relations among them. In this context, the challenge of continuously recommending relevant articles to users lies in tackling a network partitioning problem, where nodes represent articles and co-occurring concepts create edges between them. In this paper, we discuss the three research directions we have taken for solving this issue: i) the identification of generic concepts to reinforce inter-article similarities; ii) the adoption of a bipartite network representation to improve scalability; iii) the design of a clustering algorithm to identify concepts for cross-disciplinary articles and obtain fine-grained topics for all articles.
