We report beta-NMR investigations of polarized 8Li implanted in thin Pb and Ag/Nb films. At the critical superconducting temperature, we observe a singular peak in the spin relaxation rate in small longitudinal magnetic fields, which is attributed to fluctuations in the superconducting order parameter. However, the peak is more than an order of magnitude larger than the prediction based on the enhancement of the dynamic electron spin susceptibility by superconducting fluctuations and reflects the presence of unexpected slow fluctuations. Furthermore the fluctuations are rapidly suppressed in a small magnetic field, which may explain why they have not been observed previously with conventional NMR or NQR.

Slow noise processes, with characteristic timescales ~1s, have been studied in planar superconducting resonators. A frequency locked loop is employed to track deviations of the resonator centre frequency with high precision and bandwidth. Comparative measurements are made in varying microwave drive, temperature and between bare resonators and those with an additional dielectric layer. All resonators are found to exhibit flicker frequency noise which increases with decreasing microwave drive. We also show that an increase in temperature results in a saturation of flicker noise in resonators with an additional dielectric layer, while bare resonators stop exhibiting flicker noise instead showing a random frequency walk process.

Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we address the problem of the superconductor-insulator phase transition (SIT) in homogeneously disordered ultrathin (2-15 nm) films of NbN. Samples thicker than 8 nm, for which the Ioffe-Regel parameter $k _F l geq 5.6$, manifest a conventional superconductivity : A spatially homogeneous BCS-like gap, vanishing at the critical temperature, and a vortex lattice in magnetic field. Upon thickness reduction, however, while $k_F l$ lowers, the STS revealed striking deviations from the BCS scenario, among which a progressive decrease of the coherence peak height and spatial inhomogeneities. The thinnest film (2.16 nm), while not being exactly at the SIT ($T_C approx 0.4 T_{C-bulk}$), showed astonishingly vanishing coherence peaks and the absence of vortices. In the quasi-2D limit, such clear signatures of the loss of long-range phase coherence strongly suggest that, at the SIT the superconductivity is destroyed by phase fluctuations.
Topological insulators embody a new state of matter characterized entirely by the topological invariants of the bulk electronic structure rather than any form of spontaneously broken symmetry. Unlike the 2D quantum Hall or quantum spin-Hall-like syst ems, the three dimensional (3D) topological insulators can host magnetism and superconductivity which has generated widespread research activity in condensed-matter and materials-physics communities. Thus there is an explosion of interest in understanding the rich interplay between topological and the broken-symmetry states (such as superconductivity), greatly spurred by proposals that superconductivity introduced into certain band structures will host exotic quasiparticles which are of interest in quantum information science. The observations of superconductivity in doped Bi_2Se_3 (Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$) and doped Bi_2Te_3 (Pd$_x$-Bi$_2$Te$_3$ T$_c$ $sim$ 5K) have raised many intriguing questions about the spin-orbit physics of these ternary complexes while any rigorous theory of superconductivity remains elusive. Here we present key measurements of electron dynamics in systematically tunable normal state of Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ (x=0 to 12%) gaining insights into its spin-orbit behavior and the topological nature of the surface where superconductivity takes place at low temperatures. Our data reveal that superconductivity occurs (in sample compositions) with electrons in a bulk relativistic kinematic regime and we identify that an unconventional doping mechanism causes the topological surface character of the undoped compound to be preserved at the Fermi level of the superconducting compound, where Cooper pairing occurs at low temperatures. These experimental observations provide important clues for developing a theory of topological-superconductivity in 3D topological insulators.
Beta-NMR has been used to study vortex lattice disorder near the surface of the high-Tc superconductor YBCO. The magnetic field distribution from the vortex lattice was detected by implanting a low energy beam of highly polarized 8Li into a thin over layer of silver on optimally doped, twinned and detwinned YBCO samples. The resonance in Ag broadens significantly below the transition temperature Tc as expected from the emerging field lines of the vortex lattice in YBCO. However, the lineshape is more symmetric and the dependence on the applied magnetic field is much weaker than expected from an ideal vortex lattice, indicating that the vortex density varies across the face of the sample, likely due to pinning at twin boundaries. At low temperatures the broadening from such disorder does not scale with the superfluid density.

We performed $^{13}$C-NMR experiment and measured spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_{1}T$ near the superconducting (SC) transition temperature $T_{c}$ in $kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br ($kappa$-Br salt), and $kappa$- (BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$ ($kappa$-NCS salt). We observed the reduction of $1/T_{1}T$ starting at the temperature higher than $T_c$ in $kappa$-Br salt. Microscopic observation of quasi-particle density of states in the fluctuating SC state revealed the effects of short-range Cooper pairs induced in the normal state to the quasi-particle density of states. We also performed systematic measurements in the fields both parallel and perpendicular to the conduction plane in $kappa$-Br and $kappa$-NCS salts, and confirmed that the reduction of $1/T_{1}T$ above $T_{c}$ is observed only in $kappa$-Br salt regardless of the external field orientation.
