An analytical and numerical treatment is given of a constrained version of the tectonics model developed by Priest, Heyvaerts, & Title [2002]. We begin with an initial uniform magnetic field ${bf B} = B_0 hat{bf z}$ that is line-tied at the surfaces $z = 0$ and $z = L$. This initial configuration is twisted by photospheric footpoint motion that is assumed to depend on only one coordinate ($x$) transverse to the initial magnetic field. The geometric constraints imposed by our assumption precludes the occurrence of reconnection and secondary instabilities, but enables us to follow for long times the dissipation of energy due to the effects of resistivity and viscosity. In this limit, we demonstrate that when the coherence time of random photospheric footpoint motion is much smaller by several orders of magnitude compared with the resistive diffusion time, the heating due to Ohmic and viscous dissipation becomes independent of the resistivity of the plasma. Furthermore, we obtain scaling relations that suggest that even if reconnection and/or secondary instabilities were to limit the build-up of magnetic energy in such a model, the overall heating rate will still be independent of the resistivity.

The question why the solar corona is much hotter than the visible solar surface still puzzles solar researchers. Most theories of the coronal heating involve a tight coupling between the coronal magnetic field and the associated thermal structure. Th is coupling is based on two facts: (i) the magnetic field is the main source of the energy in the corona and (ii) the heat transfer preferentially happens along the magnetic field, while is suppressed across it. However, most of the information about the coronal heating is derived from analysis of EUV or soft X-ray emissions, which are not explicitly sensitive to the magnetic field. This paper employs another electromagnetic channel -- the sunspot-associated microwave gyroresonant emission, which is explicitly sensitive to both the magnetic field and thermal plasma. We use nonlinear force-free field reconstructions of the magnetic skeleton dressed with a thermal structure as prescribed by a field-aligned hydrodynamics to constrain the coronal heating model. We demonstrate that the microwave gyroresonant emission is extraordinarily sensitive to details of the coronal heating. We infer heating model parameters consistent with observations.
Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are one of the primary drivers of extreme space weather. They are large eruptions of mass and magnetic field from the solar corona and can travel the distance between Sun and Earth in half a day to a few days. Prediction s of CMEs at 1 Astronomical Unit (AU), in terms of both its arrival time and magnetic field configuration, are very important for predicting space weather. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modeling of CMEs, using flux-rope-based models is a promising tool for achieving this goal. In this study, we present one such model for CME simulations, based on spheromak magnetic field configuration. We have modified the spheromak solution to allow for independent input of poloidal and toroidal fluxes. The motivation for this is a possibility to estimate these fluxes from solar magnetograms and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) data from a number of different approaches. We estimate the poloidal flux of CME using post eruption arcades (PEAs) and toroidal flux from the coronal dimming. In this modified spheromak, we also have an option to control the helicity sign of flux ropes, which can be derived from the solar disk magnetograms using the magnetic tongue approach. We demonstate the applicability of this model by simulating the 12 July 2012 CME in the solar corona.
In the present work, we test the predictions of the AWSoM model, a global extended-MHD model capable of calculating the propagation and turbulent dissipation of Alfven waves in any magnetic topology, against high resolution spectra of the quiescent o ff-disk solar corona. Wave dissipation is the only heating mechanism assumed in this model. Combining 3D model results with the CHIANTI atomic database, we were able to create synthetic line-of-sight spectra which include the effects of emission line broadening due to both thermal and wave-related non-thermal motions. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time a global model is used to obtain synthetic non-thermal line broadening. We obtained a steady-state solution driven by a synoptic magnetogram and compared the synthetic spectra with SUMER observations of a quiescent area above the solar west limb extending between 1.04 and 1.34 solar radii at the equator. Both the predicted line widths and the total line fluxes were consistent with the observations for 5 different ions. Using the 3D solution, we were able to locate the region that contributes the most to the emission used for measuring electron properties; we found that region to be a pseudo-streamer, whose modeled electron temperature and density are consistent with the measured ones. We conclude that the turbulent dissipation assumed in the AWSoM model can simultaneously account for the observed heating rate and the non-dissipated wave energy observed in this region.
Solar coronal dimmings have been observed extensively in the past two decades and are believed to have close association with coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Recent study found that coronal dimming is the only signature that could differentiate powerf ul ares that have CMEs from those that do not. Therefore, dimming might be one of the best candidates to observe the stellar CMEs on distant Sun-like stars. In this study, we investigate the possibility of using coronal dimming as a proxy to diagnose stellar CMEs. By simulating a realistic solar CME event and corresponding coronal dimming using a global magnetohydrodynamics model (AWSoM: Alfven-wave Solar Model), we first demonstrate the capability of the model to reproduce solar observations. We then extend the model for simulating stellar CMEs by modifying the input magnetic flux density as well as the initial magnetic energy of the CME flux rope. Our result suggests that with improved instrument sensitivity, it is possible to detect the coronal dimming signals induced by the stellar CMEs.
The drag-based model (DBM) for heliospheric propagation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is a widely used analytical model which can predict CME arrival time and speed at a given heliospheric location. It is based on the assumption that the propagati on of CMEs in interplanetary space is solely under the influence of magnetohydrodynamical drag, where CME propagation is determined based on CME initial properties as well as the properties of the ambient solar wind. We present an upgraded version, covering ensemble modelling to produce a distribution of possible ICME arrival times and speeds, the drag-based ensemble model (DBEM). Multiple runs using uncertainty ranges for the input values can be performed in almost real-time, within a few minutes. This allows us to define the most likely ICME arrival times and speeds, quantify prediction uncertainties and determine forecast confidence. The performance of the DBEM is evaluated and compared to that of ensemble WSA-ENLIL+Cone model (ENLIL) using the same sample of events. It is found that the mean error is $ME=-9.7$ hours, mean absolute error $MAE=14.3$ hours and root mean square error $RMSE=16.7$ hours, which is somewhat higher than, but comparable to ENLIL errors ($ME=-6.1$ hours, $MAE=12.8$ hours and $RMSE=14.4$ hours). Overall, DBEM and ENLIL show a similar performance. Furthermore, we find that in both models fast CMEs are predicted to arrive earlier than observed, most probably owing to the physical limitations of models, but possibly also related to an overestimation of the CME initial speed for fast CMEs.
