Specific heat, magnetic torque, and magnetization studies of LiCoPO4 olivine are presented. They show that an unique set of physical properties of LiCoPO4 leads to the appearance of features characteristic of 2D Ising systems near the Neel temperature, T_N =21.6 K, and to the appearance of an uncommon effect of influence of magnetic field on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The latter effect manifests itself as a first-order transition, discovered at ~9 K, induced by magnetic field of 8 T. Physical nature of this transition was explained and a model describing experimental dependences satisfactorily was proposed.

MnCr2O4 that exhibits spin frustration and complex spiral spin order is of great interest from both fundamental as well as application-oriented perspectives. Unlike CoCr2O4 whose ground state presents the coexistence of commensurate spiral spin order (CSSO) and ferroelectric order, MnCr2O4 shows no multiferroicity. One reason is that the spiral spin order is highly sensitive to the oxygen concentration in MnCr2O4. Here, we have successfully grown high-quality single-crystalline MnCr2O4 by the chemical vapor transport method. We observe a new first-order magnetic transition from the incommensurate spiral spin order (ICSSO) at 19.4 K to the CSSO at 17.4 K. This magnetic transition is verified by magnetization, specific heat, and magnetoelectric measurements, which also confirm that the ground state exhibits the coexistence of the CSSO and magnetoelectricity below 17.4 K. Interestingly, the temperature evolution of Raman spectra between 5.4 and 300 K suggests that the structure remains the same. We also find that the phase-transition temperature of the CSSO decreases as applied magnetic field increases up to 45 kOe.
Apart from being so far the only known binary multiferroic compound, CuO has a much higher transition temperature into the multiferroic state, 230 K, than any other known material in which the electric polarization is induced by spontaneous magnetic order, typically lower than 100 K. Although the magnetically induced ferroelectricity of CuO is firmly established, no magnetoelectric effect has been observed so far as direct crosstalk between bulk magnetization and electric polarization counterparts. Here we demonstrate that high magnetic fields of about 50 T are able to suppress the helical modulation of the spins in the multiferroic phase and dramatically affect the electric polarization. Furthermore, just below the spontaneous transition from commensurate (paraelectric) to incommensurate (ferroelectric) structures at 213 K, even modest magnetic fields induce a transition into the incommensurate structure and then suppress it at higher field. Thus, remarkable hidden magnetoelectric features are uncovered, establishing CuO as prototype multiferroic with abundance of competitive magnetic interactions.

Specific heat, resistivity, susceptibility and Hall coefficient measurements were performed on high-quality single crystalline Na$_{1-delta}$FeAs. This compound is found to undergo three successive phase transitions at around 52, 41, and 23 K, which correspond to structural, magnetic and superconducting transitions, respectively. The Hall effect result indicates the development of energy gap at low temperature due to the occurrence of spin-density-wave instability. Our results provide direct experimental evidence of the magnetic ordering in the nearly stoichiometric NaFeAs.
Topological phases, especially topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), have been intensively explored observed experimentally in three-dimensional (3D) materials. However, the two-dimensional (2D) films are explored much less than 3D TCI, and even 2D topological insulators. Based on ab initio calculations, here we investigate the electronic and topological properties of 2D PbTe(001) few-layers. The monolayer and trilayer PbTe are both intrinsic 2D TCIs with a large band gap reaching 0.27 eV, indicating a high possibility for room-temperature observation of quantized conductance. The origin of TCI phase can be attributed to the p band inversion, which is determined by the competitions of orbital hybridization and quantum confinement. We also observe a semimetal-TCI-normal insulator transition under biaxial strains, whereas a uniaxial strains lead to Z2 nontrivial states. Especially, the TCI phase of PbTe monolayer remains when epitaxial grow on NaI semiconductor substrate. Our findings on the controllable quantum states with sizable band gaps present an ideal platform for realizing future topological quantum devices with ultralow dissipation.
The polycrystalline form of the compound, Tb5Si3, crystallizing in Mn5Si3-type hexagonal structure, which was earlier believe to order antiferromagnetically below 69 K, has been recently reported by us to exhibit interesting magnetoresistance (MR) an omalies. In order to understand the magnetic anomalies of this compound better, we synthesized single crystals of this compound and subjected them to intense magnetization and MR studies. The results reveal that the magnetic behavior is strongly anisotropic as the easy axis is along a basal plane. There appear to be multiple magnetic features in the close vicinity of 70 K. In addition, there are multiple steps in isothermal magnetization (which could not be resolved in the data for polycrystalline data) for magnetic-field (H) along a basal plane. The sign of MR is positive in the magnetically ordered state, and, interestingly, the magnitude dramatically increases at the initial step for H parallel to basal plane, but decreases at subsequent steps as though the origin of these steps are different. However, for the perpendicular orientation (H || [0 0 0 1]), there is no evidence for any step either in M(H) or in MR(H). These results establish this compound is an interesting magnetic material.
