We have measured the spin splitting in single-layer and bilayer graphene by means of tilted magnetic field experiments. Applying the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula for the spin-induced decrease of the Shubnikov de Haas amplitudes with increasing tilt angle we directly determine the product between the carrier cyclotron mass m* and the effective g-factor g* as a function of the charge carrier concentration. Using the cyclotron mass for a single-layer and a bilayer graphene we find an enhanced g-factor g* = 2.7 pm 0.2 for both systems.
Split Cooper pair is a natural source for entangled electrons which is a basic ingredient for quantum information in solid state. We report an experiment on a superconductor-graphene double quantum dot (QD) system, in which we observe Cooper pair spl
itting (CPS) up to a CPS efficiency of ~ 10%. With bias on both QDs, we are able to detect a positive conductance correlation across the two distinctly decoupled QDs. Furthermore, with bias only on one QD, CPS and elastic co-tunneling can be distinguished by tuning the energy levels of the QDs to be asymmetric or symmetric with respect to the Fermi level in the superconductor.
Spin-ordered electronic states in hydrogen-terminated zigzag nanographene give rise to magnetic quantum phenomena that have sparked renewed interest in carbon-based spintronics. Zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs), quasi one-dimensional semiconductin
g strips of graphene featuring two parallel zigzag edges along the main axis of the ribbon, are predicted to host intrinsic electronic edge states that are ferromagnetically ordered along the edges of the ribbon and antiferromagnetically coupled across its width. Despite recent advances in the bottom-up synthesis of atomically-precise ZGNRs, their unique electronic structure has thus far been obscured from direct observations by the innate chemical reactivity of spin-ordered edge states. Here we present a general technique for passivating the chemically highly reactive spin-polarized edge states by introducing a superlattice of substitutional nitrogen-dopants along the edges of a ZGNR. First-principles GW calculations and scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveal a giant spin splitting of the low-lying nitrogen lone-pair flat bands by a large exchange field (~850 Tesla) induced by the spin-polarized ferromagnetically ordered edges of ZGNRs. Our findings directly corroborate the nature of the predicted emergent magnetic order in ZGNRs and provide a robust platform for their exploration and functional integration into nanoscale sensing and logic devices.
We study the disorder effect of resonant spin Hall effect in a two-dimension electron system with Rashba coupling in the presence of a tilted magnetic field. The competition between the Rashba coupling and the Zeeman coupling leads to the energy cros
sing of the Landau levels, which gives rise to the resonant spin Hall effect. Utilizing the Stredas formula within the self-consistent Born approximation, we find that the impurity scattering broadens the energy levels, and the resonant spin Hall conductance exhibits a double peak around the resonant point, which is recovered in an applied titled magnetic field.
Transport properties of highly mobile 2D electrons are studied in symmetric GaAs quantum wells placed in titled magnetic fields. Quantum positive magnetoresistance (QPMR) is observed in magnetic fields perpendicular to the 2D layer. Application of in
-plane magnetic field produces a dramatic decrease of the QPMR. This decrease correlates strongly with the reduction of the amplitude of Shubnikov de Haas resistance oscillations due to modification of the electron spectrum via enhanced Zeeman splitting. Surprisingly no quantization of the spectrum is detected when the Zeeman energy exceeds the half of the cyclotron energy suggesting an abrupt transformation of the electron dynamics. Observed angular evolution of QPMR implies strong mixing between spin subbands. Theoretical estimations indicate that in the presence of spin-orbital interaction the elastic impurity scattering provides significant contribution to the spin mixing in GaAs quantum wells at high filling factors.
A new type of angular oscillations of the high-frequency conductivity for conductors with a band-contact line has been predicted. The effect is caused by groups of charge carriers near the self-intersection points of the Fermi surface, where the elec
tron energy spectrum is near-linear and can be described by anisotropic Dirac cone model. The amplitude of the resonance peaks satisfies the simple sum rule. The ease in changing the degree of anisotropy of the Dirac cone due to the angle of inclination of the magnetic field makes the considered type of oscillations attractive for experimental observation of relativistic effects
