The exact diagonalization and the variational cluster approximation (VCA) are used to study the nature of a novel Mott insulator induced by a strong spin-orbit coupling for a two-dimensional three-band Hubbard model consisting of the $t_{2g}$ manifold of $5d$ orbitals. To characterize the ground state, we introduce a local Kramers doublet which can represent a state with effective angular momentum $J_{rm eff}=|{bm S}-{bm L}|=1/2$ as well as spin $S=1/2$. Our systematic study of the pseudo-spin structure factor defined by the Kramers doublet shows that the $J_{rm eff}=1/2$ Mott insulator is smoothly connected to the $S=1/2$ Mott insulator. Using the Kramers doublet as a variational state for the VCA, we examine the one-particle excitations for the Mott insulating phase. These results are compared with recent experiments on Sr$_2$IrO$_4$.

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of bulk GdCu (CsCl-type) are investigated using spin density functional theory, where highly localized $4f$ orbitals are treated within LDA+$U$ and GGA+$U$ methods. The calculated magnetic ground st ate of GdCu using collinear as well as spin spiral calculations exhibits a C-type antiferromagnetic configuration representing a spin spiral propagation vector $mathbf{Q}=frac{2pi}{a}(frac{1}{2},frac{1}{2},0)$. The parameters of the effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian are evaluated from a self-consistent electronic structure and are used to determine the magnetic transition temperature. The estimated N{e}el temperature of the cubic GdCu using GGA+$U$ and LDA+$U$ density functionals within the mean field and random phase approximations are in good agreement with the experimentally measured values. In particular, the theoretical understanding of the experimentally observed core Gd $4f$ levels shifting in photoemission spectroscopy experiments is investigated in detail. By employing the self-consistent constrained random-phase approximation we determined the strength of the effective Coulomb interaction (Hubbard $U$) between localized $4f$ electrons. We find that, the shift of Gd-$4f$ states in GdCu with respect to bulk Gd within DFT+$U$ is sensitive to choice of lattice parameter. The calculations for $4f$-level shifts using DFT+$U$ methods as well as Hubbard-1 approximation are not consistent with the experimental findings.

The structural, elastic, magnetic properties, as well as electronic structure and chemical bonding picture of new oxide 3d1-perovskite BaVO3, recently synthesized, were systematically investigated involving the first-principles FLAPW-GGA calculations . The obtained results are discussed in comparison with available experimental data, as well as with those obtained before for isostructural and isoelectronic SrVO3 perovskite.

Experimental techniques using Bragg diffraction may elucidate electronic and magnetic properties of ferric ions in multiferroic ScFeO3 that are puzzling. A collinear magnetic motif of dipole moments is not expected for s-state ions with an acentric p arent (paramagnetic) structure, because single-site anisotropy is negligible and antisymmetric exchange interactions promote an inhomogeneous magnetic motif. However, current indications are that ScFeO3 supports G-type antiferromagnetism, with an unknown moment direction, which implies that ferric ions are not in the high-spin 6S state. It is argued that significant insight on these open questions can be achieved by confronting experimental data with calculated structure factors for resonant x-ray and magnetic neutron Bragg spots, and we report results for G-type antiferromagnetism allowed by the corundum-like parent R3c structure. Calculated structure factors include Dirac multipoles that are time-odd and parity-odd, e.g., dipoles that are often called anapoles or toroidal moments.
We report an experimental study of co, a Mott insulator containing chains of edge-sharing CuO$_4$ plaquettes, by polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), resonant magnetic x-ray scattering (RMXS), magnetic susceptibility, and pyroelectric curr ent measurements. The XAS data show that the valence holes reside exclusively on the Cu$^{2+}$ sites within the copper-oxide spin chains and populate a $d$-orbital polarized within the CuO$_4$ plaquettes. The RMXS measurements confirm the presence of incommensurate magnetic order below a Neel temperature of $T_N = 11.5$ K, which was previously inferred from neutron powder diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance data. In conjunction with the magnetic susceptibility and XAS data, they also demonstrate a new orbital selection rule for RMXS that is of general relevance for magnetic structure determinations by this technique. Dielectric property measurements reveal the absence of significant ferroelectric polarization below $T_N$, which is in striking contrast to corresponding observations on the isostructural compound lco. The results are discussed in the context of current theories of multiferroicity.
Strong interplay of fundamental order parameters in complex oxides are known to give rise to exotic physical phenomena. The 4d transition metal oxide SrRhO3 has generated much interest, but advances have been hindered by difficulties in preparing sin gle crystalline phases. Here, we have epitaxially stabilized high quality single crystalline SrRhO3 films and investigated their structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. We determine that their properties significantly differ from the paramagnetic metallic ground state that governs bulk samples and are strongly related to rotations of the RhO6 octahedra.
