We propose a topological field theory for a spin-less two-dimensional chiral superconductor that contains fundamental Majorana fields. Due to a fermionic gauge symmetry, the Majorana modes survive as dynamical degrees of freedom only at magnetic vortex cores, and on edges. We argue that these modes have the topological properties pertinent to a p-wave superconductor including the non-abelian braiding statistics, and support this claim by calculating the ground state degeneracy on a torus. We also briefly discuss the connection to the Moore-Read Pfaffian quantum Hall state, and extensions to the spinful case and to three-dimensonal topological superconductors.

The study of topological superconductivity is largely based on the analysis of mean-field Hamiltonians that violate particle number conservation and have only short-range interactions. Although this approach has been very successful, it is not clear that it captures the topological properties of real superconductors, which are described by number-conserving Hamiltonians with long-range interactions. To address this issue, we study topological superconductivity directly in the number-conserving setting. We focus on a diagnostic for topological superconductivity that compares the fermion parity $mathcal{P}$ of the ground state of a system in a ring geometry and in the presence of zero vs. $Phi_{text{sc}}=frac{h}{2e} equiv pi$ flux of an external magnetic field. A version of this diagnostic exists in any dimension and provides a $mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant $ u=mathcal{P}_0mathcal{P}_{pi}$ for topological superconductivity. In this paper we prove that the mean-field approximation correctly predicts the value of $ u$ for a large family of number-conserving models of spinless superconductors. Our result applies directly to the cases of greatest physical interest, including $p$-wave and $p_x+ip_y$ superconductors in one and two dimensions, and gives strong evidence for the validity of the mean-field approximation in the study of (at least some aspects of) topological superconductivity.
Disorder is known to suppress the gap of a topological superconducting state that would support non-Abelian Majorana zero modes. In this paper, we study using the self-consistent Born approximation the robustness of the Majorana modes to disorder wit hin a suitably extended Eilenberger theory, in which the spatial dependence of the localized Majorana wave functions is included. We find that the Majorana mode becomes delocalized with increasing disorder strength as the topological superconducting gap is suppressed. However, surprisingly, the zero bias peak seems to survive even for disorder strength exceeding the critical value necessary for closing the superconducting gap within the Born approximation.
We show that in superconductors that break time reversal symmetry and have anisotropy, such as p+ip materials, all order parameters and magnetic modes are mixed. Excitation of the gap fields produces an excitation of the magnetic field and vice versa . Correspondingly the long-range decay of the magnetic field and order parameter are in general given by the same exponent. Thus one cannot characterize p+ip superconductors by the usual coherence and magnetic field penetration lengths. Instead the system has normal modes that are associated with linear combinations of magnetic fields, moduli of and phases of the order parameter components. Each such normal mode has its own decay length that plays the role of a hybridized coherence/magnetic field penetration length. On a large part of the parameter space these exponents are complex. Therefore the system in general has damped oscillatory decay of the magnetic field accompanied by damped oscillatory variation of the order parameter fields.
The possibility of p-wave pairing in superconductors has been proposed more than five decades ago, but has not yet been convincingly demonstrated. One difficulty is that some p-wave states are thermodynamically indistinguishable from s-wave, while ot hers are very similar to d-wave states. Here we studied the self-field critical current of NdFeAs(O,F) thin films in order to extract absolute values of the London penetration depth, the superconducting energy gap, and the relative jump in specific heat at the superconducting transition temperature, and find that all the deduced physical parameters strongly indicate that NdFeAs(O,F) is a bulk p-wave superconductor. Further investigation revealed that single atomic layer FeSe also shows p-wave pairing. In an attempt to generalize these findings, we re-examined the whole inventory of superfluid density measurements in iron-based superconductors show quite generally that most of the iron-based superconductors are p-wave superconductors.
Motivated by recent proposals of correlation induced insensitivity of d-wave superconductors to impurities, we develop a simple pairing theory for these systems for up to a moderate strength of disorder. Our description implements the key ideas of An derson, originally proposed for disordered s-wave superconductors, but in addition takes care of the inherent strong electronic repulsion in these compounds, as well as disorder induced inhomogeneities. We first obtain the self-consistent one-particle states, that capture the effects of disorder exactly, and strong correlations using Gutzwiller approximation. These `normal states, representing the interplay of strong correlations and disorder, when coupled through pairing attractions following the path of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS), produce results nearly identical to those from a more sophisticated Gutzwiller augmented Bogoliubov-de Gennes analysis.
