We use homogeneous samples of radio-quiet Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the connection between the velocity shift and the equivalent width (EW) of the [OIII] 5007 emission line, and their correlations with physical parameters of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We find a significant and negative correlation between the EW of the core component, EW(core), and the blueshift of either the core (the peak), the wing, or the total profile of [OIII] emission; it is fairly strong for the blueshift of the total profile particularly. However, both quantities (EW and velocity shift) generally have only weak, if any, correlations with fundamental AGN parameters such as the nuclear continuum luminosity at 5100 L_{5100}, black hole mass (M_{BH}), and the Eddington ratio (L/L_{Edd}); these correlations include the classical Baldwin effect of EW(core), an inverse Baldwin effect of EW(wing), and the relationship between velocity shifts and lratio. Our findings suggest that both the large object-to-object variation in the strength of [OIII] emission and the blueshift--EW(core) connection are not governed primarily by fundamental AGN parameters such as L_{5100}, M_{BH} and L/L_{Edd}. We propose that the ISM conditions of the host galaxies play a major role instead in the diversity of the [OIII] properties in active galaxies. This suggests that the use of[OIII] 5007 luminosity as proxy of AGN luminosity does not depend strongly on the above-mentioned fundamental AGN parameters.

The location of warm dust producing the Mid-infrared (MIR) emission in Type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) is complex and not yet fully known. We explore this problem by studying how the MIR covering factor (CF_{MIR} =L_{MIR}/L_{bol}) correlates wit h the fundamental parameters of AGN accretion process (such as L_{bol}, black hole mass MBH, and Eddington ratio L/LEdd) and the properties of narrow emission lines (as represented by [O III] 5007), using large data sets derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS) and the Wide Infrared Sky Survey (WISE). Firstly we find that the luminosity of the [O III] wing component (Lwing) correlates more tightly with the continuum luminosity (L5100) than the luminosity of the line core component (Lcore) does, which is in line with our previous conclusion that the wing component, generally blueshifted, originates from the polar outflows in the inner narrow-line region (NLR). We then find that the MIR CF shows the strongest correlation with Lwing/L_{bol} rather than with Lcore/L_{bol} or the above fundamental AGN parameters, and the correlation becomes stronger as the infrared wavelength increases. We also confirm the anti-correlations of CF_{MIR} with L_{bol} and MBH, and the lack of dependence of CF_{MIR} on the Eddington ratio. These results suggest that a large fraction of the warm dust producing MIR emission in AGNs is likely embedded in polar outflows in the NLR instead of in the torus.

We investigate the relationship between the linewidths of broad Mg II lambda2800 and Hbeta in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to refine them as tools to estimate black hole (BH) masses. We perform a detailed spectral analysis of a large sample of AGNs at intermediate redshifts selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, along with a smaller sample of archival ultraviolet spectra for nearby sources monitored with reverberation mapping. Careful attention is devoted to accurate spectral decomposition, especially in the treatment of narrow-line blending and Fe II contamination. We show that, contrary to popular belief, the velocity width of Mg II tends to be smaller than that of Hbeta, suggesting that the two species are not cospatial in the broad-line region. Using these findings and recently updated BH mass measurements from reverberation mapping, we present a new calibration of the empirical prescriptions for estimating virial BH masses for AGNs using the broad Mg II and Hbeta lines. We show that the BH masses derived from our new formalisms show subtle but important differences compared to some of the mass estimators currently used in the literature.

I have compiled observations of [OIII] 5007 line and 5GHz radio emission for a large sample of GPS, CSS and FR sources. Several properties were studied and compared. The most relevant findings are that the FWHM and the luminosity of the [OIII] 5007 l ine are correlated with the size of the radio source. I present the data and discuss the correlations, with special focus on jet-host interaction, triggering and enhancing of [OIII] 5007 emission.

We study the properties of SDSS galaxies with and without AGN detection as a function of the local and global environment measured via the local density, the mass of the galaxy host group (parameterised by the group luminosity) and distance to massiv e clusters. Our results can be divided in two main subjects, the environments of galaxies and their relation to the assembly of their host haloes, and the environments of AGN. (i) For the full SDSS sample, we find indications that the local galaxy density is the most efficient parameter to separate galaxy populations, but we also find that galaxies at fixed local density show some remaining variation of their properties as a function of the distance to the nearest cluster of galaxies (in a range of 0 to 10 cluster virial radii). These differences seem to become less significant if the galaxy samples are additionally constrained to be hosted by groups of similar total luminosity. (ii) In AGN host galaxies, the morphology-density relation is much less noticeable when compared to the behaviour of the full SDSS sample. In order to interpret this result we analyse control samples constructed using galaxies with no detected AGN activity with matching distributions of redshifts, stellar masses, r-band luminosities, g-r colours, concentrations, local densities, host group luminosities, and fractions of central and satellite galaxies. The control samples also show a similar small dependence on the local density indicating an influence from the AGN selection, but their colours are slightly bluer compared to the AGN hosts regardless of local density. Furthermore, even when the local density is held fixed at intermediate or high values, and the distance to the closest cluster of galaxies is allowed to vary, AGN control galaxies away from clusters tend to be bluer than the AGN hosts. This whitepaper describes how the VLASS could be designed in a manner to allow the identification of candidate dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) at separations <7 kpc. Dual AGN represent a clear marker of two supermassive black holes within an ongoin g merger. A dual AGN survey will provide a wealth of studies in structure growth and gravitational-wave science. Radio wavelengths are ideal for identifying close pairs, as disturbed stellar and gaseous material can obscure their presence in optical and shorter wavelengths. With sufficiently high resolution and sensitivity, a large-scale radio imaging survey like the VLASS will uncover many of these systems and provide the means to broadly study the radio properties of candidate dual systems revealed at other wavelengths. We determine that the ideal survey for our purposes will be at as high a resolution as possible, with significantly more science return in A array at L-band or higher, or B array at C-band or higher. We describe a range of potential survey parameters within this document. Based on the analysis outlined in this whitepaper, our ideal survey would create a catalogue of $gtrsim$100 dual AGN in either: 1) a medium-sensitivity (~1 mJy detection threshold), wide-field (few thousand square degree) survey, or 2) a high-sensitivity (~10 uJy threshold) survey of several hundred square degrees.
