Irradiation with high energy photons (10.2 - 11.8 eV) was applied to small diamondoids isolated in solid rare gas matrices at low temperature. The photoproducts were traced via UV absorption spectroscopy. We found that upon ionization the smallest of these species lose a peripheral H atom to form a stable closed-shell cation. This process is also likely to occur under astrophysical conditions for gas phase diamondoids and it opens the possibility to detect diamond-like molecules using their rotational spectrum since the dehydrogenated cations possess strong permanent dipole moments. The lowest-energy electronic features of these species in the UV were found to be rather broad, shifting to longer wavelengths with increasing molecular size. Calculations using time-dependent density functional theory support our experimental findings and extend the absorption curves further into the vacuum ultraviolet. The complete sigma - sigma* spectrum displays surprisingly strong similarities to meteoritic nanodiamonds containing 50 times more C atoms.

SrMnSb$_2$ is suggested to be a magnetic topological semimetal. It contains square, 2D Sb planes with non-symmorphic crystal symmetries that could protect band crossings, offering the possibility of a quasi-2D, robust Dirac semi-metal in the form of a stable, bulk (3D) crystal. Here, we report a combined and comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of SrMnSb$_2$, including the first ARPES data on this compound. SrMnSb$_2$ possesses a small Fermi surface originating from highly 2D, sharp and linearly dispersing bands (the Y-states) around the (0,$pi$/a)-point in $k$-space. The ARPES Fermi surface agrees perfectly with that from bulk-sensitive Shubnikov de Haas data from the same crystals, proving the Y$-$states to be responsible for electrical conductivity in SrMnSb$_2$. DFT and tight binding (TB) methods are used to model the electronic states, and both show good agreement with the ARPES data. Despite the great promise of the latter, both theory approaches show the Y-states to be gapped above E$_F$, suggesting trivial topology. Subsequent analysis within both theory approaches shows the Berry phase to be zero, indicating the non-topological character of the transport in SrMnSb$_2$, a conclusion backed up by the analysis of the quantum oscillation data from our crystals.
The recent discovery of non-saturating giant positive magnetoresistance in Td-WTe2 has aroused great interest in this material. We have studied the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of bulk and few-layer Td-WTe2 experimentally and the oretically. Spin-orbit coupling is found to govern the semi-metallic character of Td-WTe2. Its structural link with the metallic 1T form provides an understanding of its structural stability. We observe a metal to insulator transition and a change in the sign of the Seebeck coefficient around 373 K. Lattice vibrations in Td-WTe2 have been analyzed by first principle calculations. Out of the 33 possible zone-center Raman active modes, five distinct Raman bands are observed around 112, 118, 134, 165 and 212 cm-1 in bulk Td-WTe2. Based on symmetry analysis and the calculated Raman tensors, we assign the intense bands at 165 cm-1 and 212 cm-1 to the A_1^ and A_1^ modes respectively. We have examined the effect of temperature and the number of layers on the Raman spectrum. Most of the bands of Td-WTe2 stiffen, and the ratio of the integrated intensities of the A_1^ to A_1^ bands decreases in the few-layer sample, while all the bands soften in both bulk and few-layer samples with increasing temperature.
Electronic energy transfer in photosynthesis occurs over a range of time scales and under a variety of intermolecular coupling conditions. Recent work has shown that electronic coupling between chromophores can lead to coherent oscillations in two-di mensional electronic spectroscopy measurements of pigment-protein complexes measured with femtosecond laser pulses. A persistent issue in the field is to reconcile the results of measurements performed using femtosecond laser pulses with physiological illumination conditions. Noisy-light spectroscopy can begin to address this question. In this work we present the theoretical analysis of incoherent two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy, I(4) 2D ES. Simulations reveal diagonal peaks, cross peaks, and coherent oscillations similar to those observed in femtosecond two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy experiments. The results also expose fundamental differences between the femtosecond-pulse and noisy-light techniques; the differences lead to new challenges and new opportunities.
Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and X-ray absorption (XA) experiments at the iron L- and nitrogen K-edge are combined with high-level first principles restricted active space self-consistent field (RASSCF) calculations for a systematic inv estigation of the nature of the chemical bond in potassium ferrocyanide in aqueous solution. The atom- and site-specific RIXS excitations allow for direct observation of ligand-to-metal (Fe L-edge) and metal-to-ligand (N K-edge) charge transfer bands and thereby evidence for strong {sigma}-donation and {pi}-back-donation. The effects are identified by comparing experimental and simulated spectra related to both the unoccupied and occupied molecular orbitals in solution.
The structural behaviour of CsCdF3 under pressure is investigated by means of theory and experiment. High-pressure powder x-ray diffraction experiments were performed up to a maximum pressure of 60 GPa using synchrotron radiation. The cubic $Pmbar{3} m$ crystal symmetry persists throughout this pressure range. Theoretical calculations were carried out using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method within the local density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation effects. The calculated ground state properties -- the equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus and elastic constants -- are in good agreement with experimental results. Under ambient conditions, CsCdF3 is an indirect gap insulator with the gap increasing under pressure.
