We investigate theoretically the coupling of a cavity mode to a continuous distribution of emitters. We discuss the influence of the emitters inhomogeneous broadening on the existence and on the coherence properties of the polaritonic peaks. We find that their coherence depends crucially on the shape of the distribution and not only on its width. Under certain conditions the coupling to the cavity protects the polaritonic states from inhomogeneous broadening, resulting in a longer storage time for a quantum memory based on emitters ensembles. When two different ensembles of emitters are coupled to the resonator, they support a peculiar collective dark state, also very attractive for the storage of quantum information.

We study a disordered ensemble of quantum emitters collectively coupled to a lossless cavity mode. The latter is found to modify the localization properties of the dark eigenstates, which exhibit a character of being localized on multiple, noncontigu ous sites. We denote such states as semi-localized and characterize them by means of standard localization measures. We show that those states can very efficiently contribute to coherent energy transport. Our paper underlines the important role of dark states in systems with strong light-matter coupling.

We investigate the performance of inhomogeneously broadened spin ensembles as quantum memories under continuous dynamical decoupling. The role of the continuous driving field is two-fold: first, it decouples individual spins from magnetic noise; seco nd and more important, it suppresses and reshapes the spectral inhomogeneity of spin ensembles. We show that a continuous driving field, which itself may also be inhomogeneous over the ensemble, can enhance the decay of the tails of the inhomogeneous broadening distribution considerably. This fact enables a spin ensemble based quantum memory to exploit the effect of cavity protection and achieve a much longer storage time. In particular, for a spin ensemble with a Lorentzian spectral distribution, our calculations demonstrate that continuous dynamical decoupling has the potential to improve its storage time by orders of magnitude for the state-of-art experimental parameters.
Robust, high-fidelity readout is central to quantum device performance. Overcoming poor readout is an increasingly urgent challenge for devices based on solid-state spin defects, particularly given their rapid adoption in quantum sensing, quantum inf ormation, and tests of fundamental physics. Spin defects in solids combine the repeatability and precision available to atomic and cryogenic systems with substantial advantages in compactness and range of operating conditions. However, in spite of experimental progress in specific systems, solid-state spin sensors still lack a universal, high-fidelity readout technique. Here we demonstrate high-fidelity, room-temperature readout of an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers via strong coupling to a dielectric microwave cavity, building on similar techniques commonly applied in cryogenic circuit cavity quantum electrodynamics. This strong collective interaction allows the spin ensembles microwave transition to be probed directly, thereby overcoming the optical photon shot noise limitations of conventional fluorescence readout. Applying this technique to magnetometry, we show magnetic sensitivity approaching the Johnson-Nyquist noise limit of the system. This readout technique is viable for the many paramagnetic spin systems that exhibit resonances in the microwave domain. Our results pave a clear path to achieve unity readout fidelity of solid-state spin sensors through increased ensemble size, reduced spin-resonance linewidth, or improved cavity quality factor.
The desire to produce high-quality single photons for applications in quantum information science has lead to renewed interest in exploring solid-state emitters in the weak excitation regime. Under these conditions it is expected that photons are coh erently scattered, and so benefit from a substantial suppression of detrimental interactions between the source and its surrounding environment. Nevertheless, we demonstrate here that this reasoning is incomplete, as phonon interactions continue to play a crucial role in determining solid-state emission characteristics even for very weak excitation. We find that the sideband resulting from non-Markovian relaxation of the phonon environment is excitation strength independent. It thus leads to an intrinsic limit to the fraction of coherently scattered light and to the visibility of two-photon coalescence at weak driving, both of which are absent for atomic systems or within simpler Markovian treatments.
We argue that long optical storage times are required to establish entanglement at high rates over large distances using memory-based quantum repeaters. Triggered by this conclusion, we investigate the $^3$H$_6$ $leftrightarrow$ $^3$H$_4$ transition at 795.325 nm of Tm:Y$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ (Tm:YGG). Most importantly, we show that the optical coherence time can reach 1.1 ms, and, using laser pulses, we demonstrate optical storage based on the atomic frequency comb protocol up to 100 $mu$s as well as a memory decay time T$_M$ of 13.1 $mu$s. Possibilities of how to narrow the gap between the measured value of T$_m$ and its maximum of 275 $mu$s are discussed. In addition, we demonstrate quantum state storage using members of non-classical photon pairs. Our results show the potential of Tm:YGG for creating quantum memories with long optical storage times, and open the path to building extended quantum networks.
