We compute the coefficients of the effective mass operator of the 1/Nc expansion for negative parity L=1 excited baryons using the Isgur-Karl model in order to compare the general approach, where the coefficients are obtained by fitting to data, with a specific constituent quark model calculation. We discuss the physics behind the fitted coefficients for the scalar part of the most general two-body quark-quark interaction. We find that both pion exchange and gluon exchange lead to the dominance of the same operator at the level of the effective mass operator, which is also observed from data.

The mass spectrum of the positive parity [56,2^+] baryons is studied in the 1/Nc expansion up to and including O(1/Nc) effects with SU(3) symmetry breaking implemented to first order. A total of eighteen mass relations result, several of which are te sted with the available data. The breaking of spin-flavor symmetry is dominated by the hyperfine interactions, while spin-orbit effects are found to be small.
The masses of the negative parity SU(6) 70-plet baryons are analyzed in the 1/Nc expansion to order 1/Nc and to first order in SU(3) breaking. At this level of precision there are twenty predictions. Among them there are the well known Gell-Mann Okub o and equal spacing relations, and four new relations involving SU(3) breaking splittings in different SU(3) multiplets. Although the breaking of SU(6) symmetry occurs at zeroth order in 1/Nc, it turns out to be small. The dominant source of the breaking is the hyperfine interaction which is of order 1/Nc. The spin-orbit interaction, of zeroth order in 1/Nc, is entirely fixed by the splitting between the singlet states Lambda(1405) and Lambda(1520), and the spin-orbit puzzle is solved by the presence of other zeroth order operators involving flavor exchange.
We present a unified approach to the thermodynamics of hadron-quark-gluon matter at finite temperatures on the basis of a quark cluster expansion in the form of a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach with a generic ansatz for the hadronic phase shifts that fulfills the Levinson theorem. The change in the composition of the system from a hadron resonance gas to a quark-gluon plasma takes place in the narrow temperature interval of $150 - 185$ MeV where the Mott dissociation of hadrons is triggered by the dropping quark mass as a result of the restoration of chiral symmetry. The deconfinement of quark and gluon degrees of freedom is regulated by the Polyakov loop variable that signals the breaking of the $Z(3)$ center symmetry of the color $SU(3)$ group of QCD. We suggest a Polyakov-loop quark-gluon plasma model with $mathcal{O}(alpha_s)$ virial correction and solve the stationarity condition of the thermodynamic potential (gap equation) for the Polyakov loop. The resulting pressure is in excellent agreement with lattice QCD simulations up to high temperatures.

The status of exotic baryons is analyzed in the limit of a large number of colors Nc. Several toy models reproducing the main features of the large-Nc QCD are studied in order to clarify the recent controversy concerning the consistency of various ap proaches to the 1/Nc-expansion for exotic baryons. The analysis reveals several difficulties of the rigid-rotator approximation including the problems of this approximation in the description of exotic baryons.
The Weinberg operator (chromo-electric dipole moment of gluon) is a CP violating quantity generated in many candidates of new physics beyond the standard model, and it contributes to observables such as the electric dipole moments (EDM) of the neutro n or atoms which are currently measured in experiments. In this proceedings contribution, we report on our result of the evaluation of the Weinberg operator contribution to the nucleon EDM in the nonrelativistic quark model using the Gaussian expansion method.
