The light curves observed from X-ray pulsars and magnetars reflect the radiation emission pattern, the geometry of the magnetic field, and the neutron star compactness. We study the statistics of X-ray pulse profiles in order to constrain the neutron star compactness and the magnetic field geometry. We collect the data for 124 X-ray pulsars, which are mainly in high-mass X-ray binary systems, and classify their pulse profiles according to the number of observed peaks seen during one spin period, dividing them into two classes, single- and double-peaked. We find that the pulsars are distributed about equally between both groups. We also compute the probabilities predicted by the theoretical models of two antipodal point-like spots that emit radiation according to the pencil-like emission patterns. These are then compared to the observed fraction of pulsars in the two classes. Assuming a blackbody emission pattern, it is possible to constrain the neutron star compactness if the magnetic dipole has arbitrary inclinations to the pulsar rotational axis. More realistic pencil-beam patterns predict that 79% of the pulsars are double-peaked independently of their compactness. The theoretical predictions can be made consistent with the data if the magnetic dipole inclination to the rotational axis has an upper limit of 40+/-4 deg. We also discuss the effect of limited sensitivity of the X-ray instruments to detect weak pulses, which lowers the number of detected double-peaked profiles and makes the theoretical predictions to be consistent with the data even if the magnetic dipole does have random inclinations. This shows that the statistics of pulse profiles does not allow us to constrain the neutron star compactness. In contrast to the previous claims by Bulik et al. (2003), the data also do not require the magnetic inclination to be confined in a narrow interval.

We present here the preliminary results of the study of the fluorescent iron line emission from X-ray pulsars with Be companions. We propose to use properties of this emission to investigate the spatial distribution and physical conditions of the mat ter around the compact object as well as in the binary system as a whole. Using data of the RXTE observatory the iron line behavior in the transient X-ray pulsar V 0332+53 spectrum was studied during the powerful type II outburst in 2004-2005. Particularly, we investigated a variability of the iron line equivalent width on different time scales (pulse period, orbital period, outburst phase) and searched for its correlation with the continuum flux, spectral parameters, etc.

Nowadays, the analysis of the X-ray spectra of magnetically powered neutron stars or magnetars is one of the most valuable tools to gain insight into the physical processes occurring in their interiors and magnetospheres. In particular, the magnetosp heric plasma leaves a strong imprint on the observed X-ray spectrum by means of Compton up-scattering of the thermal radiation coming from the star surface. Motivated by the increased quality of the observational data, much theoretical work has been devoted to develop Monte Carlo (MC) codes that incorporate the effects of resonant Compton scattering in the modeling of radiative transfer of photons through the magnetosphere. The two key ingredients in this simulations are the kinetic plasma properties and the magnetic field (MF) configuration. The MF geometry is expected to be complex, but up to now only mathematically simple solutions (self-similar solutions) have been employed. In this work, we discuss the effects of new, more realistic, MF geometries on synthetic spectra. We use new force-free solutions in a previously developed MC code to assess the influence of MF geometry on the emerging spectra. Our main result is that the shape of the final spectrum is mostly sensitive to uncertain parameters of the magnetospheric plasma, but the MF geometry plays an important role on the angle-dependence of the spectra.

Pulsars typically exhibit radio emission in the form of narrow pulses originated from confined regions of their magnetospheres. A potential presence of magnetospherically originated emission outside this region, the so-called off-pulse emission, woul d challenge the existing theories. Detection of significant off-pulse emission has been reported so far from only two pulsars, B0525+21 and B2045-16, at 325 and 610 MHz. However, the nature of this newly uncovered off-pulse emission remains unclear. To probe its origin we conducted very high resolution radio observations of B0525+21 and B2045-16 with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.39 GHz. Whereas the pulsed emission is detected at a level consistent with previous observations, we report absence of any off-pulse emission above $42$ and $96 mathrm{mu Jy beam^{-1}}$ (three times the rms noise levels) for B0525+21 and B2045-16, respectively. Our stringent upper limits imply the off-pulse emission to be less than $0.4$ and $0.3%$ of the period-averaged pulsed flux density, i.e., much fainter than the previously suggested values of $1$-$10%$. Since the EVN data are most sensitive to extremely compact angular scales, our results suggest a non-magnetospheric origin for the previously reported off-pulse emission. Presence of extended emission that is resolved out on these milliarcsecond scales still remains plausible. In this case, we constrain the emission to arise from structures with sizes of $sim (0.61$-$19) times 10^3 mathrm{au}$ for B0525+21 and $sim (0.48$-$8.3) times 10^3 mathrm{au}$ for B2045-16. These constraints might indicate that the two pulsars are accompanied by compact bow-shock pulsar wind nebulae. Future observations probing intermediate angular scales ($sim 0.1$-$5 mathrm{arcsec}$) will help in clarifying the actual origin of the off-pulse emission.
We study the ensemble of linear polarization measurement in the optical afterglows of long-duration gamma-ray bursts. We assume a non sideways-expanding top-hat jet geometry and use the relatively large number of measurements under the assumption tha t they represent a statistically unbiased sample. This allows us to constrain the ratio between the maximum predicted polarization and the measured one, which is an indicator of the geometry of the magnetic field in the downstream region of the external shock. We find that the measured polarization is substantially suppressed with respect to the maximum possible for either a completely ordered magnetic field parallel to the shock normal or to a field that is entirely contained in the shock plane. The measured polarization is limited, on average, to between 25 and 30% of the maximum theoretically possible value. This reduction requires the perpendicular component of the magnetic field to be dominant in energy with respect to the component parallel to the shock front, as expected for a shock generated and/or shock compressed field. We find, however, that the data only marginally support the assumption of a simple top-hat jet, pointing towards a more complex geometry for the outflow.
We present the results of broad band (3-100 keV) observations of several X-ray pulsars with the INTEGRAL and RXTE observatories. We concentrate on the luminosity and energy dependence of the pulse profile and the variations of the cyclotron line ener gy. In V0332+53 the line energy changes nearly linearly with the source luminosity, while in 4U0115+63 its behavior is more complicated. Strong variations of the pulse profile with the energy and source intensity were found for both of pulsars; in V0332+53 the changes of the pulse profile near the cyclotron line are especially drastic. The preliminary results obtained for Her X-1 and GX 301-2 in a high intensity state show the absence of significant pulse profile changes with the energy. Results and possible emission mechanisms are briefly discussed in terms of theoretical models of accreting pulsars.
