Based on the vector angular spectrum method and the stationary phase method and the fact that a circular aperture function can be expanded into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, the analytical vectorial structure of a four-petal Gaussian beam (FPGB) diffracted by a circular aperture is derived in the far field. The energy flux distributions and the diffraction effect introduced by the aperture are studied and illustrated graphically. Moreover, the influence of the f-parameter and the truncation parameter on the nonparaxiality is demonstrated in detail. In addition, the analytical formulas obtained in this paper can degenerate into un-apertured case when the truncation parameter tends to infinity. This work is beneficial to strengthen the understanding of vectorial properties of the FPGB diffracted by a circular aperture.

The analytical vectorial structure of non-paraxial four-petal Gaussian beams(FPGBs) in the far field has been studied based on vector angular spectrum method and stationary phase method. In terms of analytical electromagnetic representations of the T E and TM terms, the energy flux distributions of the TE term, the TM term, and the whole beam are derived in the far field, respectively. According to our investigation, the FPGBs can evolve into a number of small petals in the far field. The number of the petals is determined by the order of input beam. The physical pictures of the FPGBs are well illustrated from the vectorial structure, which is beneficial to strengthen the understanding of vectorial properties of the FPGBs.
The coherent exchange of optical near fields between two neighboring dipoles plays an essential role for the optical properties, quantum dynamics and thus for the function of many naturally occurring and artificial nanosystems. These interactions are inherently short-ranged, extending over a few nanometers only, and depend sensitively on relative orientation, detuning and dephasing, i.e., on the vectorial properties of the coupled dipolar near fields. This makes it challenging to analyze them experimentally. Here, we introduce plasmonic nanofocusing spectroscopy to record coherent light scattering spectra with 5-nm spatial resolution from a small dipole antenna, excited solely by evanescent fields and coupled to plasmon resonances in a single gold nanorod. We resolve mode couplings, resonance energy shifts and Purcell effects as a function of dipole distance and relative orientation, and show how they arise from different vectorial components of the interacting optical near-fields. Our results pave the way for using dipolar alignment to control the optical properties and function of nanoscale systems.
An electrical pulse E(t) is completely defined by its time-dependent amplitude and polarisation direction. For optical pulses the manipulation and characterisation of the light polarisation state is fundamental due to its relevance in several scienti fic and technological fields. In this work we demonstrate the complete temporal reconstruction of the electric field of few-cycle pulses with a complex time-dependent polarisation. Our experimental approach is based on extreme ultraviolet interferometry with isolated attosecond pulses and on the demonstration that the motion of an attosecond electron wave packet is sensitive to perturbing fields only along the direction of its motion. By exploiting the sensitivity of interferometric techniques and by controlling the emission and acceleration direction of the wave packet, pulses with energies as low as few hundreds of nanojoules can be reconstructed. Our approach opens the possibility to completely characterise the electric field of the pulses typically used in visible pump-probe spectroscopy.

In chiral sum frequency generation (C-SFG), the chiral nature of ${chi}^{(2)}$ requires the three involved electric fields to be pairwise non-parallel, leading to the traditional non-collinear configuration which is a hindrance for achieving diffract ion limited resolution while utilizing it as a label-free imaging contrast mechanism . Here we propose a collinear C-SFG (CC-SFG) microscopy modality by using longitudinal z-polarized vectorial field. Label-free chiral imaging with enhanced spatial resolution (~1.4 times improvement in one lateral and the longitudinal directions over the traditional non-collinear scheme) is demonstrated, providing a new path for SFG microscopy with diffraction-limited resolution for mapping chirality.
Based on the Kirchhoff-Fresnel approximation, we numerically analyze spatial characteristics of the light field formed after a circular Laguerre-Gaussian beam with a single-charged optical vortex (OV) passes the transparent screen with a rectilinear phase step. The main attention is paid to the localization and interactions of the OVs, which form the singular skeleton of the transformed field. The phase-step influence depends on its value and position with respect to the beam axis. Upon weak perturbation (low phase step) the main effect is that the OV is shifted from the initial axial position and describes a closed loop when the phase step is monotonously translated across the beam. The strong perturbation (the phase step is close to pi) induces topological reactions with emergence and annihilation of additional singularities in the near-axial region of the diffracted beam cross section. These features are interpreted based on the 3D OV trajectories that show an intricate behavior with kinks and retrograde segments. The details of the OV migration and singular skeleton transformations reveal the fundamental helical nature and transverse energy circulation in the OV beams. The numerical results obtained in this paper show possibilities for the purposeful control of the singular skeleton characteristics within the transformed beam, and can be useful for the OV diagnostics, OV metrology and micromanipulation techniques.
