Numerical simulations are performed of a test scalar field in a spacetime undergoing gravitational collapse. The behavior of the scalar field near the singularity is examined and implications for generic singularities are discussed. In particular, our example is the first confirmation of the BKL conjecture for an asymptotically flat spacetime.

We present a framework for nonlinearly coupled scalar-tensor theory of gravity to address both inflation and core-collapse supernova problems. The unified approach is based on a novel dynamical trapping and relaxation of scalar gravity in highly ener getic regimes. The new model provides a viable alternative mechanism of inflation free from various issues known to affect previous proposals. Furthermore, it could be related to observable violent astronomical events, specifically by releasing a significant amount of additional gravitational energy during core-collapse supernovae. A recent experiment at CERN relevant for testing this new model is briefly outlined.
We construct analytical models to study the critical phenomena in gravitational collapse of the Husain-Martinez-Nunez massless scalar field. We first use the cut-and-paste technique to match the conformally flat solution ($c=0$ ) onto an outgoing Vai dya solution. To guarantee the continuity of the metric and the extrinsic curvature, we prove that the two solutions must be joined at a null hypersurface and the metric function in Vaidya spacetime must satisfy some constraints. We find that the mass of the black hole in the resulting spacetime takes the form $Mpropto (p-p^*)^gamma$, where the critical exponent $gamma$ is equal to $0.5$. For the case $c eq 0$, we show that the scalar field must be joined onto two pieces of Vaidya spacetimes to avoid a naked singularity. We also derive the power-law mass formula with $gamma=0.5$. Compared with previous analytical models constructed from a different scalar field with continuous self-similarity, we obtain the same value of $gamma$. However, we show that the solution with $c eq 0$ is not self-similar. Therefore, we provide a rare example that a scalar field without self-similarity also possesses the features of critical collapse.
Gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field with the periodic boundary condition in a cubic box is reported. This system can be regarded as a lattice universe model. We construct the initial data for a Gaussian like profile of the scalar field taking the integrability condition associated with the periodic boundary condition into account. For a large initial amplitude, a black hole is formed after a certain period of time. While the scalar field spreads out in the whole region for a small initial amplitude. It is shown that the expansion law in a late time approaches to that of the radiation dominated universe and the matter dominated universe for the small and large initial amplitude cases, respectively. For the large initial amplitude case, the horizon is initially a past outer trapping horizon, whose area decreases with time, and after a certain period of time, it turns to a future outer trapping horizon with the increasing area.
We consider the effect of a positive cosmological constant on spherical gravitational collapse to a black hole for a few simple, analytic cases. We construct the complete Oppenheimer-Snyder-deSitter (OSdS) spacetime, the generalization of the Oppenhe imer-Snyder solution for collapse from rest of a homogeneous dust ball in an exterior vacuum. In OSdS collapse, the cosmological constant may affect the onset of collapse and decelerate the implosion initially, but it plays a diminishing role as the collapse proceeds. We also construct spacetimes in which a collapsing dust ball can bounce, or hover in unstable equilibrium, due to the repulsive force of the cosmological constant. We explore the causal structure of the different spacetimes and identify any cosmological and black hole event horizons which may be present.

In this article, I discuss the construction of some globally conserved currents that one can construct in the absence of a Killing vector. One is based on the Komar current, which is constructed from an arbitrary vector field and has an identically v anishing divergence. I obtain some expressions for Komar currents constructed from some generalizations of Killing vectors which may in principle be constructed in a generic spacetime. I then present an explicit example for an outgoing Vaidya spacetime which demonstrates that the resulting Komar currents can yield conserved quantities that behave in a manner expected for the energy contained in the outgoing radiation. Finally, I describe a method for constructing another class of (non-Komar) globally conserved currents using a scalar test field that satisfies an inhomogeneous wave equation, and discuss two examples; the first example may provide a useful framework for examining the arrow of time and its relationship to energy conditions, and the second yields (with appropriate initial conditions) a globally conserved energy- and momentumlike quantity that measures the degree to which a given spacetime deviates from symmetry.
