We utilize high-resolution (R~60,000), high S/N (~100) spectroscopy of 17 cool Pleiades dwarfs to examine the confounding star-to-star scatter in the 6707 Li I line strengths in this young cluster. Our Pleiads, selected for their small projected rotational velocity and modest chromospheric emission, evince substantial scatter in the linestrengths of 6707 Li I feature that is absent in the 7699 K I resonance line. The Li I scatter is not correlated with that in the high-excitation 7774 O I feature, and the magnitude of the former is greater than the latter despite the larger temperature sensitivity of the O I feature. These results suggest that systematic errors in linestrength measurements due to blending, color (or color-based T_eff) errors, or line formation effects related to an overlying chromosphere are not the principal source of Li I scatter in our stars. There do exist analytic spot models that can produce the observed Li scatter without introducing scatter in the K I line strengths or the color-magnitude diagram. However, these models predict factor of >3 differences in abundances derived from the subordinate 6104 and resonance 6707 Li I features; we find no difference in the abundances determined from these two features. These analytic spot models also predict CN line strengths significantly larger than we observe in our spectra. The simplest explanation of the Li, K, CN, and photometric data is that there must be a real abundance component to the Pleiades Li dispersion. We suggest that this real abundance component is the manifestation of relic differences in erstwhile pre-main-sequence Li burning caused by effects of surface activity on stellar structure. We discuss observational predictions of these effects.

White dwarfs with metal lines in their spectra act as signposts for post-main sequence planetary systems. Searching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 12, we have identified 231 cool (<9000 K) DZ white dwarfs with strong metal absorptio n, extending the DZ cooling sequence to both higher metal abundances, lower temperatures, and hence longer cooler ages. Of these 231 systems, 104 are previously unknown white dwarfs. Compared with previous work, our spectral fitting uses improved model atmospheres with updated line profiles and line-lists, which we use to derive effective temperatures and abundances for up to 8 elements. We also determine spectroscopic distances to our sample, identifying two halo-members with tangential space-velocities >300 kms-1. The implications of our results on remnant planetary systems are to be discussed in a separate paper.
We have derived Fe abundances of 16 solar-type Pleiades dwarfs by means of an equivalent width analysis of Fe I and Fe II lines in high-resolution spectra obtained with the Hobby - Eberly Telescope and High Resolution Spectrograph. Abundances derived from Fe II lines are larger than those derived from Fe I lines (herein referred to as over-ionization) for stars with Teff < 5400 K, and the discrepancy (deltaFe = [Fe II/H] - [Fe I/H]) increases dramatically with decreasing Teff, reaching over 0.8 dex for the coolest stars of our sample. The Pleiades joins the open clusters M 34, the Hyades, IC 2602, and IC 2391, and the Ursa Major moving group, demonstrating ostensible over-ionization trends. The Pleiades deltaFe abundances are correlated with Ca II infrared triplet and Halpha chromospheric emission indicators and relative differences therein. Oxygen abundances of our Pleiades sample derived from the high-excitation O I triplet have been previously shown to increase with decreasing Teff, and a comparison with the deltaFe abundances suggests that the over-excitation (larger abundances derived from high excitation lines relative to low excitation lines) and over-ionization effects that have been observed in cool open cluster and disk field main sequence (MS) dwarfs share a common origin. Star-to-star Fe I abundances have low internal scatter, but the abundances of stars with Teff < 5400 K are systematically higher compared to the warmer stars. The cool star [Fe I/H] abundances cannot be connected directly to over-excitation effects, but similarities with the deltaFe and O I triplet trends suggest the abundances are dubious. Using the [Fe I/H] abundances of five stars with Teff > 5400 K, we derive a mean Pleiades cluster metallicity of [Fe/H] = +0.01 +/- 0.02.
Young (125 Myr), populous ($>$1000 members), and relatively nearby, the Pleiades has provided an anchor for stellar angular momentum models for both younger and older stars. We used K2 to explore the distribution of rotation periods in the Pleiades. With more than 500 new periods for Pleiades members, we are vastly expanding the number of Pleiads with periods, particularly at the low mass end. About 92% of the members in our sample have at least one measured spot-modulated rotation period. For the $sim$8% of the members without periods, non-astrophysical effects often dominate (saturation, etc.), such that periodic signals might have been detectable, all other things being equal. We now have an unusually complete view of the rotation distribution in the Pleiades. The relationship between $P$ and $(V-K_{rm s})_0$ follows the overall trends found in other Pleiades studies. There is a slowly rotating sequence for $1.1lesssim(V-K_{rm s})_0lesssim 3.7$, and a primarily rapidly rotating population for $(V-K_{rm s})_0gtrsim 5.0$. There is a region in which there seems to be a disorganized relationship between $P$ and $(V-K_{rm s})_0$ for $3.7 lesssim(V-K_{rm s})_0lesssim 5.0$. Paper II continues the discussion, focusing on multi-period structures, and Paper III speculates about the origin and evolution of the period distribution in the Pleiades.

This is the first of a series of works devoted to investigate cool dwarfs in wide multiple systems. Here, I present Koenigstuhl 4 A and B, two bright, intermediate M dwarfs with a common high proper-motion and separated by 299 arcsec. At the most pro bable distance of the system, 19 pc, the projected physical separation is 5700 AU, which makes Koenigstuhl 4 AB to be one of the least bound binary systems with late-type components found to date. I also associate the primary with a ROSAT X-ray source for the first time.
Hydra spectra of 85 G-K dwarfs in the young cluster, M35, near the Li 6708 Angstrom line region are analyzed. From velocities and Gaia astrometry, 78 are likely single-star members which, combined with previous work, produces 108 members with T_eff r anging from 6150 to 4000 K as defined by multicolor, broad-band photometry, E(B-V ) = 0.20 and [Fe/H] = -0.15, though there are indications the metallicity may be closer to solar. A(Li) follows a well-delineated decline from 3.15 for the hottest stars to upper limits <= 1.0 among the coolest dwarfs. Contrary to earlier work, M35 includes single stars at systematically higher A(Li) than the mean cluster relation. This subset exhibits higher V_ROT than the more Li-depleted sample and, from photometric rotation periods, is dominated by stars classed as convective (C); all others are interface (I) stars. The cool, high-Li rapid rotators are consistent with models that consider simultaneously rapid rotation and radius inflation; rapid rotators hotter than the sun exhibit excess Li depletion, as predicted by the models. The A(Li) distribution with color and rotation period, when compared to the Hyades/Praesepe and the Pleiades, is consistent with gyrochronological analysis placing M35s age between the older M34 and younger Pleiades. However, the Pleiades display a more excessive range in A(Li) and rotation period than M35 on the low-Li, slow-rotation side of the distribution, with supposedly younger stars at a given T_eff in the Pleiades spinning slower, with A(Li) reduced by more than a factor of four compared to M35.
